Even thought I play the game for almost 2 years already, WvW is still quite new to me, since I mainly dueled and roamed in EB or Alpine BL. With the new changes introduced with HoT, I saw the amount of players in WvW drastically fall. I really liked the game mode, so I got frustrated with the decrease of players and started to research some reasons. While browsing the Twitch directory for GW2 I found WvW interviews and really liked the content. Thus I have wondered ever since. Does Anet watch these interviews? Cause the interviewees seem to know more about the game mode than devs themselves.

Yes, and I do so hope they continue to watch the videos. Though the Dev’s need to realize that Reyana cannot interview even a single percent of the WvW population in a year. Of those interviewed so far, it’s only been Commanders. Of course, finding people to interview must be a nightmare and Commanders are the easiest to spot, literally. Though that still leaves individuals that roam, scout, build, escort, or just plain run as militia voiceless. Anet, you need to help her out by directly communicating as only you can do so on a large scale.

My one real gripe is that a few of the Commanders are basically a hive mind. It painted a very narrow portrait of the needs and future of WvW. Ins is the first interviewee that has had a wider and more inclusive outlook. Which is certainly appreciated as is the interviews themselves.

Watched the interviews and I can agree that the interview from Reyana are amazing.

Favorite one was the interview with INS (hell, I am not from EU, but props to him ^^). As it was previously mentioned, he had a wider range of view and he covered many subjects such as roaming, havoc squad and the zergs perspective.(http://www.twitch.tv/reyana_atac/v/31478828).

There are 3 things Anet could do tommorow to make a huge recover from the bad situation WvW is currently in according to INS (at 15:44 in the highlights video).
-1 Bring back friday night reset
-2 Rewards on a daily basis for each objectives. Once you get your daily reward you get a chest with rewards in addition to the loots given by the NPC/players you’ve killed.
-3 Bring back Alpine Borderland. Alpine was loved (see the twitch chat hype when INS said the sacred comment ‘’Everyone would be running around, everyone would be fighting. Living the days! It’s like you know, you bring something back that people have been missing so much. You don’t realize how much you missed it until it’s gone. It’s gonna be massive!’’

Props to Reyana for taking the initiative and doing such a great job at it.
Thanks to all the commanders who participated in those interviews, many good points have been brought forwards.

Sadly quite a limited selection, as they were all from the top tiers. Ins at least tried to get a wider viewpoint by including the other types that play besides the 50 strong zerg comms.

That a streamer had to do this and then it’s picked up and broadcast by Anet is also sad- Anet should have been doing this regularly as part of the promotion of the game mode and spending a lot more time and effort on this mode. It might be a case now of ‘too little, too late’ to revive the game mode and try and bring wvw players back from the other games they have no left for.

Perhaps they can repeat the process with commanders from each tier (if they can even find one in the bottom 3-4 tiers these days) to get a balanced view of what wvw is like for the other 90% of players not in the top 3 servers, so the devs don’t go off designing another disaster like the Deserted BL based on feedback from the most populated servers.

This, in a nutshell, is how EU differs from NA. All of our commanders are like this for the most part — they all recognize and respect the fact that there’s various styles of gameplay.

The main issues with wvw had nothing to do with the maps, in fact you could argue that the maps were wvw strengths as they allowed great fights/sieges and strategic use of objectives with minimal pve interference.

Pre HOT issues were:
1. Coverage imbalance invalidating PPT during prime time due to nightcap/morning cap by certain servers.
2. Serverside lag in big fights, with 5+ sec skill delay making anything but 111111 impossible.
3. Boring, imbalanced meta with ineffective melee post stability change and OP cc + ranged damage aka pirate ship. HOT has only made this worse with Rev Hammer etc
4. Abysmal gold/item rewards compared to pve, pointless wvw rank progression for veteran players, no wvw specific legendary etc etc

None of these have been addressed by HOT, rather new issues have introduced:
5. Terrible BL maps – as described by Ins. WAS 3 YEARS OF FEEDBACK REGARDING US WANTING LESS PVE IN WVW IGNORED?
6. Broken wvw guild upgrade system, requiring massive grind in pve to unlock essential wvw specific upgrades e.g. +5. SERIOUSLY HOW COULD ANYONE HAVE THOUGHT THIS WAS GOOD FOR WVW GUILDS??

If they took the old maps, and swapped the locations of the north camp and the garrison, and moved the spawn from the citadel up to where the orb alters used to be, the old maps would have been fine. That was pretty much the only major change that needed to be done to them. Or eve shift the garrison up to where the citadel was, shift the spawn points up to where the orb alter was, and shift the north camp down to where the garrison was. Not a whole lot was really needed beyond that. That would put the northern towers in strategic position around the garrison, while still keeping options open. While bloodlust wasn’t jawdroppingly amazing, it was at least something to keep roamers active. Granted, I’d prefer the original orb dynamic, though I’d change the stat buffs to anything else, and ya know, would have banned the people hacking/glitching into the keeps to get them. But I liked them because they added an extra element, a real incentive to fight over, and a reason to try to hold at least 1 keep on each borderland. Which promoted more action overall.

The new maps are just….. overkill in the completely wrong direction, and they’ll need to pull off a miracle to recover from all of the bad changes from HoT. Hell, they’re already reverting things (and labeling it as “updates”), they could have save a lot of time, money, effort, frustration, and not lost a giant chunk of the population by just making the few necessary changes to the Alpine map and putting in the tier system for the area upgrades and calling it a day.

The guild upgrades was…… well…. there’s no other way to say it, shady as hell. That’s like graduating college and then waking up one day to find out you have to repeat from 7th grade on up. It’s just plain soulless and deceptive of them. New upgrades should have been exactly that, new upgrades. Not taking away the existing upgrades, locking them behind massive grinds, and calling them new. That’s a scam. When any other company in any other industry tries pulling that crap, they end up having to pay out millions of dollars from the inevitable class action lawsuits, or get shut down outright for deceptive business practices. At the very least, whoever was in charge would get fired, and made the scapegoat for the public. But….. none of that’s happening here, so it’s just going to be a roller coaster ride down to rock bottom from here. It’s sad, the game that had the most potential out of any game on the market when it was released was absolutely brutalized by consistent horrible design decisions post launch. At this point, if it dies, it would be a mercy killing.

Hardly cry about it, just means when I’m fighting an organised guild I’ll just piratekitten them until they lose a few melee, rotations are screwed and then train them instead of going in melee range and having fun.

Everything is moving everything more towards piratekitten and catering to the hardcore groups in WvW. Yet people fail to see new players joining need to have fun and stand a chance, and these new players will be the new recruits your hardcore guilds are trying to recruit 6 months down the line.

WvW needs to be easy to get into, fairly easy to learn and compete but hard to master. That way a steady influx of players will keep the game mode active 24/7 instead of prime time. Over complicate or raise the skill bar for trying to compete and you alienate some of the population and thus people go play something more rewarding.

I couldn’t care if I fight a 1 push enemy or an enemy that wipes me over and over, as long as I always have people to play with, and against. WvW is dying and I gave my input, what have you done?

And I quite happily fight 2-4 guilds at once, never been rekt by 1 guild when running over 40, and if you knew me, I never run with under 40 nowadays. If anything these changes would make it harder for the guilds fighting my blob. I want balance for the grand scheme of things.

WvWvW does NOT need more things to make it more complex. The new borderlands are less beginner friendly than the old Alpine map, which was more straightforward and easier to travel. We don’t need the shield generators nor more siege. We definitely don’t need more pve elements, like the shrines. We don’t need more choke points or places where to fall down to your death. We don’t need more gimmicks. WvWvW should be both casual friendly and easy to access by beginners yet at the same time offer indefinite challenge for the best. I know it is very hard game design choice to achieve.

What WvWvW has been lacking is:
1. balance (has been asked for countless of times)
2. rewards (why WvWvW rank up chests gives us green items and still experience points gained in WvWvW don’t count for any masteries or anything else)
3. server side optimization (fixing the lag)
4. recently also players. Having the outnumbered “buff” on us almost every single time I play is NOT funny anymore (that buff is pretty much useless when enemy scouts/babysits every possible objective with siege + superior numbers)

Now the best thing for Arenanet to do to revive WvWvW is very simple:
1. Change scoring so that taking objectives from the leading server (determined in real time) gives more points. This is far better than Points-per-Kills, which favors the side with the biggest blob/zerg and ganking.
2. Copy spvp reward tracks to WvWvW and make them so that just 2 hours of normal play will complete one track. Also each rank up chest should guarantee at least one rare. There should be more items, like ascended back piece, you can purchase with WvWvW related currencies + gold + laurels.
3. Reinstate the Alpine border instead of Desert BL.

The officially suggested changes (in another thread) are more or less harmful, besides the upgrade change (current auto pilot upgrade is bad).

I think the meta is more casual friendly atm anyway, large blobs with either lots of ranged or Melee can work, it depends on your style of commanding really and how you adapt.

When it comes to Guilds, you generally still need a good amount of guards with well timed stab rotations, otherwise all that CC and ranged damage will melt you. With more players, the bigger groups, also have more mitigation thanks to the AOE cap, especially if they stack closely.

Unless you have a bad composition, or have no coordination at all, you can’t lose.
The new rally mechanics could benefit either groups, but Anet should trial it before implementing any change to that.

Hmm… off-peak times (that’s 20 or so hours a day) and in the lower tiers (say the lower 5 or 6?) we don’t usually have “large blobs”. So while CrimsonNeonite is right – his post is true only for a small part of the WvW experience new players may meet, and to be honest, if you’ve already got big blobs you don’t need so many new or casual players.

I think Ins got it exactly right: “WvW needs to be easy to get into, fairly easy to learn and compete but hard to master.”

We need to get more people involved in the lower tiers and off-peak times. At the moment I suspect they either don’t see sufficient reward to play WvW or don’t enjoy it (and I suspect imbalance in match ups may play a part here). It’s been said before, and it’s still true – the new casual player is your potential WvW guild mate. If we can mentor them and help them, and they find it fun, we have another dedicated player.

The interviews were interesting to listen to.

I haven’t played the game in a while. I was hoping HoT would re-spark my interest in the game, especially WvW, but all the changes made to WvW in HoT (this includes the changes to guild upgrades) have simply resulted in myself and my friends quitting entirely. Our last attempt to play the game was a few months ago when we transferred to a lower tier server, but most of us saw the coming storm from HoT in the distance, and we lost interest.

But I do appreciate the community efforts such as this interview with Ins from Reyana, to try and fix this dying game mode. Perhaps this game can have another chance if ArenaNet acts quickly. Nothing short of a complete "relaunch" of the WvW game mode will be enough to get my friends back, but I think that with enough development attention, ArenaNet can retain their remaining WvW population.

Yeah. I’ve had a lot of fun playing WvW over the past few years, but…. it’s been more in spite of the game rather than because of it. Each new “improvement” Anet’s come out with has been a serious downgrade, with a resulting playerbase shrinkage. With HoT, it was just too much of an “improvement” at once, and the overall massive downgrade took too heavy of a toll on everyone. The most fun I had in WvW because of the game itself came in 2012, and since then the primary source of my enjoyment has been the community on my server.

If they reverted everything to how it was at launch, and made a few strategic alterations, and a TON of bug fixes, removed the exploits and brought in actual GMs to referee the matches, I think the playerbase would come back. I think there’d be an immediate small influx of players, then a gradual increase over time. But….. that won’t be what they do. They’ll ride this disaster into the ground and while trying to pimp their failure esport. Pride goes before the fall. They’ve shown an overabundance of hubris, so the fall really is inevitable.

It truly is sad indeed. However, even the hollowed out shell that GW2 is presently in comparison to its former glory is still better in my opinion to the other MMORPGs out there right now. But you’re right, it’s still depressing to see what it’s become.

Assuming Anet wants honest, unfiltered, and unbiased feedback from the player base rather than listen to the few of us who post here, there are ways of doing that so they can salvage what’s left of the game. They can send emails to the active accounts linking them to an online survey and hear it from the players directly. Or, and we know this capability exists from the beta in ’13, in game questionnaires relevant to the content being played.

Now, I don’t claim to be the smartest guy in the world or as one to have the only original ideals around here. These suggestions HAD to have come up over the course of 2 years around the Anet brainstorming table and for one reason or another haven’t seen the light of day. And at some point, one wonders if their tone deaf approach to the game is deliberate. All MMOs will run their eventual course, save for WoW whose only being floated by a budget that Anet will only see in its wildest dreams. Therefore it obviously makes sense giving their painfully obvious limited resources to poll the active player base to see where they should focus their efforts and in what direction they should go.
