Is Guardian good for getting drops in WvW?
A staff guardian’s autoattack is one of the best at tagging in GW2 and your shouts and ability to hand out boons like crazy will keep you and the zerg alive to keep on getting drops.
I play a guardian and have no trouble getting drops. A guardian is very tanky and you can viably go full melee and just tag everythin. You have the boons and armour and blocks to go deep. Hammer and greatsword both are pretty fantastic for AoE damage.
Staff is really good for gettin drops. Realize that any AoE class can only hit 5 targets with an AoE (’cept like meteor swarm) while you are hitting 5 targets with your staff every second. It has 600 range which is very safe for a guardian and you can always use #2 and #3 to hit 1200 range.
In keep defenses you can #1 through the wall, #3 as an AoE, or best thing anyone can do – bring arrow carts. In sieges, be the guy on the ram or the guy who heals the guy on the ram.
The trick is to not bother about leveling up, and just enjoy the game. Leveling up happens on its own.
Guardian is great in WvW. In PvE, the Ranger is my favorite!
or when in an organized group, allowing you to get in melee range. Meaning he could basically not get many drops/xp unless he was in an organized group.
Is this still the case? I feel really feel like I should have picked Warrior, I would have had a bow…
Yes this is still the case. For leveling a guardian in WvW, it’s even more the case.
I main a guardian in WvW using a Staff bunker zerg-busting build that gets tons of drops. But that’s because I frontline the zerg, bunker my nearby teammates with long-duration boons, dodge to heal them, tag everything with Staff #1 and increased-size Symbols, and smash enemy zergs, push through to their backline and smash their squishies, etc.
Loot bags galore. But I can do that b/c I’m at 80 in full Exotics and Ascended and have the survivability and full Traits needed to do that. While you’re leveling you won’t be remotely close to being able to do that.
You can still try it, just run slightly behind your 80 frontliners so they get targeted and not you, but not so far back that your staff #1 still hits enemies as your frontliners get to them.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here. Before rerolling or quitting, also try tagging things with Scepter #2. It does good AoE damage, not too terribly long of a cd, and lets you attack enemies from a bit more range.
But if neither of those work, then yeah, Warrior. But if you can stick it out, Guardian is well worth it at 80.

I am NOT playing like this anymore, that’s why I was so bored in the first place, b/c I was just smelling the PvE roses, good god what do you find fun of following a zerg and tagging mobs for hours on end for no carrot at the end of the stick???
I amost exclusively play WvW and I’m leveling a guardian now in WvW. And I love it and get plenty of drops without even trying.
They have increased the drops in WvW awhile ago so depending on when you last played, it may be much better.
Also as to your response to Calvin, I’m not sure what you mean. WvW is about fighting other people not NPC’s so its much more interesting in its own right imo. There are no roses to smell in WvW – all blood and guts strewn across the battlefield.

If you zerg Guardian beats everyone else hands down to get drops. I run staff/hammer and both have masses of aoe in zergs, you just cant move for lootbags. If you win of course….
Before I say anything else, I must state that I am biased towards guardians – I love the role, especially in WvW.
I take my 4 level 80s into WvW, and my Guard is the best. But as kurtosis said, it is difficult at lower levels without the higher level gear and traits, but really worth the effort.
The first time I went into WvW I was completely decimated … it made me learn more about being a guardian and that really paid off.
I play Staff/Hammer or Staff/GS and get twice the drops of the Necro I run with, despite the fact that Necros have a better health pool.
I’m not skilled in the Guardian so really can’t give you good info there…. but I do live for WvW. I don’t count the points and worry about if we are the winning server. But I do put my heart into defending and taking poi’s. I do live and love to win, more importantly….go to sleep that night dreaming of the good, honest…hard fought battles from earlier that day. And nothing makes me happier than a well played, (or a few well played) guardian on our team.
I know bags are loved…but we get to know players….and the good ones are missed when they leave. I know I’ll mess his name up…but we got a commander on our server named Novous that everytime I get the honor to do battle with him….its a great reward to me. And I respect and follow what he says because he gets the job done.
If you love the Guardian and feel comfortable playing it to its fullest… please give it another go. You may end up being a commander others follow into glorious battle.

Eeeps….I did mess his name up…dag nabbit… its Novus Y, tho we do have many others that rock, like Brother Alaric and our famous Quenta…along with others. Just wanted to do a little repenting and spell them right. They deserve that at the very least, hehe.

Really? I mean, REALLY? I leveled my guardian from 1-80 in WvW and all I did was use Staff #1. It was boring as hell. But I tag like almost everything in a zerg.

I find staff a refreshin and fun change when I decide to run it. I can’t tell people what they’ll find fun though, I can only tell them it’s about as good as tagging people for loot gets (which is what he asked about). shrug
