Is it Possible to DDoS a server?
Yea I kill People.
Yes it is possible and from what people are hearing that is exactly what’s happening. It isn’t rival server ddosing your server though, apparently the cloud servers that host a bunch of different games are are being hit.

DDOS is possible. What Katripper has mentioned above is the most common scenario though. But if you are on Blackgate at present, their teamspeak is specifically being DDOS’d and it is taking down other servers in their cloud. Their community forums are also getting DDOS’d which is using a seperate server. Chances are its a bad apple from SOR or JQ or who knows, maybe even BG. All we know for sure at present is that this is one of the most extreme cases of DDOS I have ever seen and I have seen alot of DDOS going down.
i love how sor and jq came down too but because bg is down, you say it must be one of us doing it. kitten and gtfo lol

Maybe you should read what I said again.
from www.gw2wvw.net where this has been discussed, anet was affected as well.

You might have missed this bit:
“working with the network operations center at our hosting company we have determined the DDoS attack that took down our TeamSpeak and data center was aimed directly at our server not somewhere above it. The amount of traffic certainly spilled out above us though as layer 3 struggled to keep up.
Null routing our IP address mitigated the attack which is still on going… so we know for sure we were directly targeted and not bystanders hit in some other attack."
Anet have their own seperate servers, so whatever is effecting Anet is a seperate entity.
ddos attacks can affect server perfomance always when the servers are not protected by specific firewall rules and modules.
default firewall settings can not protect servers from ddos attacks

no read the forums, someone mentioned insider info regarding cisco on the matter. Somewhere the BG v Jq v SOR matchup thread

I seen it. The quote I placed above is from the same thread.
DDOS a server is what they do when they take down a homepage.
I don’t see why someone would DDOS a WvW-Server. All players independent from which homeserver they are, are playing at the same machine. (in the same matchup) So if you DDOS the WvW-Server you will also hit “your allies” along the way.
DDOS a TS is something different, but DDOS Anet from a player makes no sense to me.

Anything is possible lets just put it that way.
But this topic has very little to with gw2 gameplay.

You know, If I wanted to be a troll I would make up fake insider info and create a ton of drama between JQ and BG, just for the ‘lulz’
Just saying that’s exactly how it happened..
And TS DDOS do happen for sure, but I doubt anyone would be DDOS a specific server.
What you guys are failing to realize is even if you’re targetting “just a TS” it is hitting a actual server.
Its not 1x TS = 1x domain. Its 1x TS tied to 100s of other servers tied to that specific domain. So if you DDOS a TS, you are not just affecting that TS. You are essentially affecting everything tied to that domain which means 100s of other customers that probably do not even care to know what TS even is.
A simple DDOS is never harmless. You are hurting much more than your intended target and depending upon the country of origin could face huge prosecution.
Do not do it.

ddos is the stupid childrens new hobby. I wish you could find them and beat the kitten out of them.

No surprise that it was seafarers involved in this and I warned Anet that it was only a matter of time before this took place, if they chose to ignore it.
Seafarers were one of the servers that became well known for DDOS against teamspeak servers during EU season one. The sort of person who is capable of that is likely to want to get to the next level which is to cripple the enemy directly, rather than just their communications.
We’ve seen other games attacked directly and we have seen Guildwars itself attacked briefly during the recent months. Games companies need to prepare against this and take it a great deal more seriously than they do.
Similarly, communities such as the seafarers community, need to move from “omg its not us”, to making a bigger point of frowning on it and trying to change the minds of their DDOS causing members to stop them doing all this. Seafarers got its bad reputation for a reason and this is just going to get worse in “tournament 2” where the rewards on offer are increased.
