Is it about time for a few Server WvW merges?
They should seriously consider NA/EU “alliances” for WvW – TopEU with BottomNA, TopNA with BottomEU, 2ndFromTop with 2ndFromBottom etc. These alliances could possibly shift over time (but not “frequently”) for balance. There is a slight difficulty because NA and EU do not have the same number of servers, but there should be a solution to that.
We have members on our server from all over the world. I am sure others do too. Lag/Latency due to geography seems insignificant compared to the other well known causes in WvW.
Global server alliances offer:
- the possibility to shake up the current stagnation at the top/bottom of each table
- improve round the clock coverage without significantly impacting peak hour queue times
Feel free to dissect!

The biggest issue with this idea is that some people play on lower tier servers because they want to. Merging them with a larger server just takes that away.
It’s an interesting idea that I like but it also takes that decision away from players. If people like bigger WvW populations they can always transfer.
sssshh.
If you call them “merges” it will never happen. Go post in the thread where we’re talking about “alliances” if you want to get some traction.

This.
When I first started playing GW2, Sea Of Sorrows was touted as the place to be for oceanic players such as myself, but I wanted to choose Jade Quarry as my home server because my IRL name means “jade”.
However, my partner created his character first and joined Ehmry Bay, so I followed suit and made Ehmry Bay my home server. I initially intended to eventually transfer to Jade Quarry, but I joined a nice friendly guild on Ehmry Bay with fellow oceanic players and NA night owls, and given how stacked and lag-inducing Jade Quarry turned out to be, I no longer have any desire to transfer there (although I have been guesting there recently for the Escape from Lion’s Arch event, Ehmry Bay is not very populated during the times I play, but during peak times, 1200 rescues is easy).
TL; DR I’m on a not-as-populated server by choice.
same, I’m happy with my server and have no interest in being shifted up to more crowded tiers.

no, no and no to server mergers
global server alliances … pffff I have EU and NA accounts, and there is a big difference in latency. On some days I can’t play my main (thief) cos of this, other classes seem fine but thief is just unplayable sometimes.
I transfered from Blackgate to T9 for a reason, no need to kitten up T9 with blobs from higher tier servers.
Well assuming that the WvW population is going to take another dip once TESO launches I do think servers merges should be considered.
It probably won’t happen because server merges are bad PR and they earn money from the transfers but it would be better for the game. Some of the lower servers are running skeleton crews in WvW and it ain’t much fun for anyone,
There’s nothing cool or honorable about playing on a low-population server. It just means you’re constantly outmanned and outgunned and can’t actually engage in PvP.
It would also revitalize the game a little which really wouldn’t hurt at this point.
The idea of servers – where you have zero control about who is on it – is a bad one for any cooperative gameplay mode anyway. It’s like anyone can assign itself to be a member of your guild. Time to get rid of it and replace it with a method where people can form their own alliances, and for those which are to lazy to do that, balanced random-alliances, i.e. look at: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Collaborative-Development-Edge-of-the-Mists/3695388

I just wanted everyone to know what being wrong looked like.
Being on a low population server is super cool. You get to A. not be a tool B. make a difference C. have awesome small man fights
Server merges aren’t going to fix anything ’cause people will still continue to transfer off the lowest tier.
Honest question, I’m sure there are occasional blips thanks to RNG, but wouldn’t it make sense that if you are in a T6 matchup you are getting pretty much even fights?
I have no idea what kind of numbers you typically see in that tier, but say there is on the home borderland 2 guilds with ~15 people following tags and about 10 or more roaming or jerking around; wouldn’t you typically see that from the enemy as well? Especially since with the lack of organized numbers, wouldn’t you be pretty stable in your home BL?
I would think that with the right organization and cooperation between your active players; that you could still make a pretty good go of it and have some satisfying fights at the lower tiers if people worked together.
Is it really that difficult to straighten out?

This makes no sense whatsoever.
every low tier server is outnumbered by… every other low tier servers?

Of course. All low tier servers face jq 24/7. Halp.

I personally say leave the ranking’s how it is. Small man groups are in these tiers cuz we hate boring blobs / zergs. We want to fight other organized small man’s / pug map zergs not blobs. Even do we get a map zerg here or there cuz we kitten em off. We still having fun in our small man groups.

One of the biggest differences between upper and lower tiers is the fairweather effect. It is felt by both sides of the fence, no argument there, but the fairweathers on lower tiers “make or break” matchups.
If you can break the fairweathers, you can break the larger servers (on lower tiers) and the population dropoff is noticeable and very sharp.
The same can be said about upper tiers, surely enough, but the biggest difference is that there are more organized WvW guilds/pugmanders/etc that will show up rain or shine. Same can be said in lower tiers, but the sheer numbers between the two are what make the difference.
So you can have some slight variance that affects population (PVE/Holidays) and it drastically affects scores in lower tiers by 100k+, while upper tiers it might just be the difference between winning or losing by 30k.
If you’re a competitive t5-7 server lower tiers are plenty fun. If you’re Kaineng or maybe ET, I’m guessing it’s not so fun. Rest of us are pretty much fine though, I’d wager.

It’s also better when the enemy is winning cuz then they bring more “Fairweather” Pver’s so they have more rally bait incase we Screw up / Easy drops. So bring ya Fairweather’s we will roundhouse em n make them rage out. ^.^
Nah, I like my Kingdom how it is.

Im sure everyone who said no will be complaining about population imbalance in 2 weeks

lolz @clint please take FC’s pve guilds i’d pay for it. I want more Havok / Roamers not them XD.
We dont care bout ppt fyi so take em so my map chat isn’t flooded with ppl Q,Qing all day bout losing a keep or 2.
They should remove 9 servers for NA and 9 servers for EU.

Link?
the romove of 9 servers from both is just dum cuz ppl will just Q,Q bout Que’s. I’m sure it was sacasm but wasted post. >.>
I dont think removing the 9 emptiest servers will result in noticeable longer queues. I am on a T2 server and the queues are short if there are any (exception reset, but they arent that long either.).

You might have a very misguided notion of how small lower tier servers are (at least in NA, eu may be more dead)… you’re talking 100s of people added to whatever queues you already experience.

No because ANet cashes on transfer fee for pugs going from low pop servers to BG.
The player base is already merging servers. We seem to be transferring to JQ, SoS, TC, FA, and MAG. Maybe BG will get some love too. I don’t think Arena net really cares about merging servers, when we are doing it for them.
I dont even know why wvw people will want to go to TESO. They dont even have a fight mechanic that rewards team work. its is just that RPG everyone loves in an online world. That is the end of it. Even if people will move to TESO they will be back sooner or later. That is what I believe.

TESO is the new shiny. After people get tired of that (and a sub fee) they will jump over to Wildstar, or they will jump to FFXIV when they have 3 faction PvE near the end of the year.
