I have a dream – Our Anet Senpai will make WvW Great Again!
WvW Forum is more competitive than WvW

Back in ancient times, people actually cared about bls. There are people who actually took the time to upgrade and siege keeps, keep supplies running and camps upgraded. People would actually ran around and scouted for absolutely no rewards for hours.
Groups actually took the effort to take a keep in an enemy’s bl, held and upgraded it, then passed the defending task over to the next timezone throughout the entire week.
Gari, bay, hills fights used to be the best and would give us hours of fun.
Now is just ebebebebebebebablebebebebebebebebebebebebebebebebeablbebebebebeb
I can roam for ages in dbl and I’ll maybe fight a few NPCs and fall off cliffs. 3 people in omega can break into inner dbl gari and no one would care.
I really think with the automatic upgrade and all, it really diminished the value of structures.

Specifically dbl or other borderlands too? I suppose I am lucky enough to see action on all of them, though I see some people don’t like going to dbl but I do. If we are talking bl in general, we’ve been taking our enemy’s bay and towers and defending them it’s been rather fun and we’ve had some good fights, not all won of course but everyone fought tooth and nail against each other.

No idea where you play, but try to do that in T1 NA

Happened on SoS. Wasn’t prime time though, slightly before SEA. But I would expect at least a few people to come help. 1 came after 15 minutes. Farmed a lot of wxp though, nothing I could do but keep repairing inner gate that was close to going down

SOS is stuck in a very bad match up. Outside of NA prime time, there are dead timezones where SOS has a force and the other servers have almost none, and where they have a force and SOS has none, so things get papered. +people get tired etc.
And yea, we care about fights, dont really care about 3 guys beating on the doors, EBG happens to be where the fights are at, if fights move to another map, so will the players, its that simple.
Back in ancient times…
On the ancient times…. the food chain is balanced and the population on WvW breeds flourished…
…but due to over hunting by a certain bandwaggon, errrrr ,i mean other evil WvW breed, and the Anet’s least priority, uhmmm, i mean habitat destruction of WvW…
… those poor WvW breed became extinct recently just like the West African Black Rhinoceros….
now, the endangered species are holding on to their dear lives and hoping that over-poaching and habitat destruction will be of halt, ahhhh, i mean match balancing not just population balancing and as well as attention by Anet on WvW mode
Not enough people to fill 4 maps in any match.
The reliable activity is in EB.
Siege invariably gets reset, is too expensive to spam and is a time sink with no in-game reward. Besides a T3 is no better than a T1 in the eyes of the score so keeping a WP in garri is all that is needed to keep a BL in check.
It’s because the game has moved on from the time when it had skilled commanders who understood tactical warfare. Now it’s just mouthbreathers farming reward tracks and there is no better place for that than EB.
I think it’s a combination of less players in general, and guilds have stopped running alone because theres no other guilds of similar size to fight so might as well tag up and voltron in EBG.
The map was designed to have an orb which you had to fight for and install into a keep for benefits. When GW2 first came out Borderland maps were fun, they kind of ruined them. I liked it better when we had the Quaggan weather nodes. I straight up refuse to play on the desert map. Too much wasted time running.

You answered your own question there. With the automatic upgrades and stuff like watchtower the need for scouts/upgraders has diminished a lot.
Activity has always been lower on borderlands even before the expansion, because you have 3 home borderlands and 1 central map with only so many players to go around on all 4 maps even in prime time, so everyone converges on one map until they are needed elsewhere.
Only real reason to be on an enemy borderland is to break their t3 keeps, or try and look for a fight, which guilds still do these days. But obviously people are not going to hang around their home borderland waiting for attacks, when you only need a couple to make scout calls, so they go to ebg which is quicker to find a fight if it’s not queued. They also put a heavy dent into havoc teams with the expansion, so much less of those bother taking stuff as before.
Since ebg is smaller, and faster to get from structure to structure it makes sense to have your numbers there to prevent steamrolling your side of the map, while on the bl’s because of the spacing of the map you have more time to respond to defense calls, and why waypoints are important to have and defend.
Maybe if they had gone with all borderlands or all ebg type of map designs things could be changed around, but at this point too much love for either type of map to take either away. Right now where the population levels are at, you could run 3 borderlands and be ok, but how many would you tee off taking away ebg? Having just 3 borderlands would have been good though since you force sides to basically have to attack one of two enemies at all times. Ebg is basically a place to hold your side and smc if you can for extra points.
Siege invariably gets reset, is too expensive to spam and is a time sink with no in-game reward. Besides a T3 is no better than a T1 in the eyes of the score so keeping a WP in garri is all that is needed to keep a BL in check.
Recent changes have been made so that a T3 is worth more PPT than a T0. So, point-wisely, players should defend.
Now, on topic : I acknowledge it’s really hard to have some help from EBG. Roughly, I feel like BL’s have their own communities (especially DBL), so it gets more of a “matchup question”, i.e. when the matchup is interesting and even, people come and play, yet when people get steamrolled at any time of day or night, players tend to wait for the next week.
It comes down to time spent looking for a fight. The people who largely post on forums like these are the exception; they care about the score, siege, and """server pride""". Most people want to log on a fight enemy players.
EBG is the most played map because it’s densely packed in several ways. You can go to EBG and find or force a fight in seconds. On Alpine or Desert BL you can take every single camp and most towers without anyone caring at all. The minority that cares about ppt, siege, and server pride really enjoys being able to do that, but the majority that just wants to PvP in a multiplayer game hates it.
EB is the most action based map. DBL, ugh I hate that map.
I do visit enemy bls but it feels very quite most of the time. The problem is the population has dwindled so much that every guild left goes to EB because after all, that’s where the fights are most of the time.
There is a small core of people still protecting their home BL and are some of the most fun people in game.
However, you are right the auto upgrade took away a responsibility of players who had a thing for it. It was a really bad addition to wvw as it further diminished community/attitude because “who cares” now.
Is there a monitor out there that calculates activity in EB versus other maps? I think we all know the dominant map, but just curious what the % is.

Well yea. I mean that’s what is happening. You don’t see as much map hopping as you’ve seen in the past. Not as much guilds/groups competing/fighting in bl.
Also you speak of ‘minority – majority’ in a really black and white way. There are people like me who enjoys both aspects of fight and ppt. I can’t stand people avoiding fights to purely maximise ppt. I also don’t like fighting in some random place on the map for the sake of fighting while the entire map is being flipped. Not to mention that some of my favourite and memorable moments are during keep fights. There are also people who enjoy keeping supplies/camps running, scouting for the server while stopping occasionally to enjoy a duel or gank whenever they have the chance.

I think everyone is using kdr as activity measures? which you can pull those numbers from https://wvwintel.com/
Glacing at NA t1-4 can see ebg numbers are usually more than 50% of the total activity.

Pretty much sums it up right there. ded geam.
