Does anyone actually think this is fun?
I mean this is supposed to be the highest echelon of WvW combat.
The system in my opinion is broken.

I’ve thought about moving servers to a closer matched conflict. However, I do not believe those exist. It appears there is always one server that completely dominates the other 2.
How can anyone actually enjoy that? Winner or Losers.

In my opinion (Yours may differ drastically from mine) what this game needs, is to give undermanned teams the tools to at least have a fighting chance against superior numbers. That and to eventually balance out the servers.

Short term:
1. Disable all transfers to high population servers.
2. Swap out the Orb Bonus and the Outmaned Bonus.

Mid-Term
1. Remove Downed State Mechanics from WvW. Keep the ability to resurrect players however. This would benefit small scale group tactics versus zergs.
2. Give Server Entrances permanent siege weapons to combat zone campers.
3. Give Server Entrances a supply resource.

Long-Term
1. Halve the points acquired from holding objectives. Reward 1 point for each pvp kill. This would make pvp more important and would also make defending a more vital role than just zerg sweeping the map.

I believe these changes would at least provide a fighting chance to teams facing a higher populated server – without giving unfair advantage.
As things stand right now, I’m very bored.

Meh! its all about tactics im from jq we just held a tower from you guy with half the people. we just had people running and grabbing supplies. im sorry your losing but you can’t always win. all we know is jq with fall next rotation

I don’t like free or penalty free server transfers myself, but I think whats allowed for one server has to be the same for all.. regardless of population. Whatever final solution comes of the server instability situation needs to be across the boards imo. I do believe it will come personally, but there’s more waiting and seeing on the horizon as they math out and people get the hopping out of their system en masse. I xferred servers weeks ago and the last of my small crew is still trying to xfer as he can only get into the “full” server during very off peak times and he works during those times… it isn’t as easy as everyone just push move and a guild pops into a full server, but xfers should cost money after x amount of xfers, imo.

Once servers are locked into tiers… a gem cost to xfer based on tier rank might be helpful as it would be consistent across the servers by tier not necisarily population (although population can effect ranking it is not the only factor). 2000 gems to go to t1/T2, 200 gems for lowest tiers etc… after an account has already used its x number of free xfers.

Out-manned bonus is no where near the equalizing concept it might be meant to fill. It is a nice start but the buff alone is not enough to compensate for how heavily out-manned you have to be to get it. In the small fight it can make a difference but doesn’t offer enough against large-scale assaults if it is meant to do so that is. It’s been said wvw is not mean to be equal playing field, it’s meant to drop people to appropriate tiers in its attempt to offer equality but while mass server hoppers are in effect that will not balance out quickly.

I think zone spawn campers are lame, however they will always find a way. I’ve been on server match that’s been slaughtered and we finally get our map back just to get into the camp spawning point… trying to hold off the server who had conquered everything in the night while we achieved upgrades was a conscious decision rather than just mindless griefing, so I can see other sides of it, but i don’t like spawn camping personally. At least here there is 3 ways out of the spawn and they give the legendary guards to draw an imaginary line.

I think that if spawn points had supply camps they’d either be empty always, or people would just use the uncontested port to run back for supply then port to other port locations. I think this would hinder the losing sides more than help them as the higher scoring servers would have multiple port locations and not need to do supply trains anymore if they could just port home and back…

Oh I hear you. Blackgate is doing the same thing to Tarnished Coast and Fort Aspenwood.

Close free transfers AND when paid transfers are finally implemented, do NOT allow transferred players to participate in WvW for two weeks (once two-week matches start). Now you can let people transfer wherever they want to play with their friends, but they can’t use it to competition dodge equally skilled servers in WvW.

But there is a more pressing matter that must be solved before two-week matches should even start: One server almost ALWAYS gets MILES ahead of the others two servers. This shows a lack of balance in WvW and reflects how a winning team only gets stronger over time. Within 48 hours the winner is obvious, so why should matches last longer than that?

WvW maps are also too small, and the advantages of spying are too great and too easy to acquire. Even once paid transfers are in effect, nothing is going to stop an alliance from getting together enough money to have spies on other servers as necessary (unless you block transferred players from WvW for 2 weeks as stated above). You had better BELIEVE the best servers are using spies to know your every move, and they will deny it until it becomes common knowledge.

These next couple months are going to be critical for ANet as many of us play GW2 for WvW. Not all of us are willing to go through ridiculous measures in order to get ahead in a video game, and we deserve to fight people who play similarly. If the developers can’t find a way to balance WvW, then a large percentage of their population will abandon the game.

Getting our kitten handed to us for a week in a fight that should have been over in eight hours is most definitely not fun. In its current state, WvW is most definitely broken — and that’s all there is to it.

TL;DR: The main issues are that match outcomes are decided in the first 24 to 48 hours, server transfers to dodge competition and implant spies are too frequent, and players should be able to fight roughly equally skilled servers.

P.S. Thieves are complete bullkitten front-line machines. The best servers seem to always have a TON of them out in WvW.

Some likely think it’s fun – but my guess is they’re on the green server in that example or the similar ones elsewhere.

The key issue will be what happens when the rankings finally settle down and whether WvW is alive at all at that time on more than a few servers.

Problem is WvW is still broken. Guards are too weak. Upgrades too weak. Some classes can solo camps for example. Also the guards doesnt change like in DAoC compared to how much is owned. And lastly the orbs wvw bonus is a killer.

Guards shouldnt defend for you vs x numbers, but on the other hand you shouldnt just roll over them either.

3 servers is whats needed. Problem is just that ArenaNet forgot the rest.

OP, if you’re complaining about the game not being fun because you’re behind, you’re probably one of those fair-weather players who is going to hop to whatever server is in the lead at any given time. Funny to see all those people from HoD posting about WvW not balanced. We have been talking about it since launch, and you guys didn’t say a word until now. Oh wait, it’s because now you are on the under end, you are losing.

Underdog need something to stay competitive during the week, and it will be really hard to balance. Can’t be too strong, but it has to be effective to keep player in WvW.

Nope. I’ve been part of SBI since early release. I log into WvW everyday regardless if we are winning or losing.
I play this game for the pvp combat. When one side has a drastic population difference than the other (and is unable to progress at all due to this) the game become boring. Not fun.

What this game NEEDS is a way to make population not the key ingredient to winning.
Tactics should matter more than numbers.
Zerg VS Zerg is not what I want to play.

It’s not fun for Jade Quarry either. At least not for me. I enjoy a challenge and fighting, but this is completely boring. SBI did make a pretty decent push last night. It’s nice to know you guys are at least alive, unlike HoD.

The fact of the matter is HoD I didn’t even see on Friday night. SBI gave up Saturday morning around noon.
So yea it isn’t fun when 2 servers roll over in the first 16 hours

Let me tell you that, from a player on JQ, it’s not fun for a lot of us either. Que times are extremely high on certain borderlands (EB is almost always full) and it’s not fun when one server is dominating the others, even for the dominating server, because then after two days of battles there’s really nothing to do the rest of the week. I really have to give some credit to SBI this week, up until yesterday night maybe, you guys just did not stop being a thorn in our side and there were some amazing battles against that server, including our forces being wiped several times. I logged onto the HoD borderlands last night and had a blast trying to retake the two northern towers from them, they were putting up one hell of a fight. For the most part the WvW servers are dead right now because JQ is so far ahead it’s all but impossible for SBI and HoD to catch up and we still have 4 days left in this battle. With the way WvW is now these week-long matches are just too long, they need to scale them back to about 3 day battles since 24 hours is way too short (no one will ever upgrade anything if it’s all reset in a couple hours) and it seems that everything dies down after about 3 days or so.

I disagree.

There are many factors which contribute to participation. In a system where there is no reward; unlike most other MMO’s; players are playing for fun.

If they don’t come out to play I think it’s because it’s not fun. Or they think it’s not fun. What element is making them think its not fun?

Currently WvW is competitive at weekends casual at weekdays. As a guild we’re organizing our gaming according to the this rule.

Our guild activity at WvW dropped from 40-50 man organizations to 10-20 men organizations. There is not much point to participate on WvW except the fun it provides. But as every game fun is not persistent without challenge, and some achievements.

Lucky for ANet there is no other game out to take our attention for now, otherwise our community would migrate without a second thought, perhaps to come back later.

i’m fairly certain is the 3rd actual match up in terms of ranks, if you think it’s going to be perfect after only 2 attempts at ranking the servers then i feel bad for you

I have to add to this that week long matches aren’t really that fun -

if you are losing, it’s a week of feeling there is no hope
if you are winning – its a week of feeling there is no competition – nothing left to cap.
if it’s a balanced fight – it’s a week of anxiety and redundancy because evenly matched fights are back and forth over and over – becomes more routine than adventure

1 day is too short – 1 week is too long

also – having the same opponents over and over in the same tier, makes it feel like a month long match. That feeling of ..Oh geez..them again ??? that in itself is boring.

it’s more exciting to have special play off matches – the superbowl of wvw

maybe 3Day matches and mix it up – give the underdogs a chance to learn from top players – it’s actually more fun to get a sudden upset from a low tier server – it may inspire that server to fight more – but to classify a server as low tier just kills the overall morale of a server and makes them decide to be all pve “we don’t wvw much in this server” ….. a low tier server might actually get excited and group up for this next fight against a top fighter.

it doesn’t matter.. ranking is still taking place to make matches better and like i said, it’s been 3 “ranked” matches in so far so ranks aren’t going to be perfect until at least 6+ matches in

how on earth you expect the worlds to be even when it’s so early is beyond me

just to give you en example: our server dominated last week, we moved up about 6 ranks or so, now we’re last with only 55k points… we’re going to move down probably about 4 or so ranks depending on the other servers meaning next week we will be against a FAIRLY even match up, if that keeps up then every server will be against a server even to them selves

I’ve been saying for about 6 weeks now that the FUN rankings are completely opposite of the server rankings. We’re having a blast in the bottom tier.

The game gets a LOT more enjoyable when you stop worrying about scoreboards and just play to enjoy the battles. The scoreboard’s not always so balanced, but the fights in prime time usually are.

My suggestion is make it so that players who do a server transfer are locked out of WvW until the next reset and make matchups take server pop into account. As I understand it, matchups are based on previous rankings right now? I like all the other suggestions in the OP as well, especially the server entrance supply and siege. IMO servers should become harder to eradicate the less map they control. As it is now it seems like there’s a threshold that’s too easy to cross into pushing competition permanently off the map.

You are dead wrong about this. I would agree with you if there were no free transfers, but at any point (even mid week) a server can get a huge influx or outflux of players and completely change their ranking.

Look at the matches you say, look how lopsided they are you say
What made the matches that way? Server transfers
People moved to SoS, BG, JQ, IoJ etc etc that is why the matches are lopsided.
People moved off of HoD, CD DB etc
People moved. The system would have worked but the fact is people moving messes up the rankings therefore the system cannot serve a function because people keep moving.

And the whole thing with no reward. What do you mean no reward? You mean the only thing that qualifies as a reward is a bright shiny trinket you can wear or something to boost your stats?
The reward is ranking, the reward is moving up, the reward is server pride, the reward is earning a higher rank.
All of these things are lost on people, they just can’t grasp the concept, the move to win instead of earn to win.
It is all on the players

IoJ has mostly been on the losing side of their matchups. Still had fun regardless.

TC’s had a few losing matches. I enjoyed them. However, this week’s match has been pure hell.

After seeing 100% green world as noted in my screenshot.. yeah. Not fun. Not fun getting out your starting gate and having large parties waiting. Not fun pushing a boulder up a hill either. Especially not fun when players think the only thing that matters is ’defending what we have’ and hitting the same location every five minutes.

I don’t mind losing.

I do mind being 100% dominated to the point that the maps are almost unplayable. I’m not a masochist and do not find that enjoyable.

There are far to many variables for entire servers to be balanced. WvW is not balanced, ANet said that right from the start. Its not like the winners get something for “winning” at the end of the week.

Too bad ArenaNet puts so much emphasis on point totals and how easy it is to see how good or bad your server is doing without ever stepping into WvW.

Of course WvW isn’t supposed to “balanced”, but there is a difference between being unbalanced and being so extremely unbalanced that it ends up as one server stomping on the other two servers across almost every single tier every single week. If that is what ArenaNet had in mind of it being “unbalanced”, then WvW really is a failure. I do not believe that is what they had intended at all, so I’m sure they’re doing something about it.

on the free server transfers, i actually think it was brilliant to allow it for the first few months of gw2 – it gives players a chance to see why free transfers are not good, and further gives everyone a chance to get a feel for different servers and find a long term home without having to spend a fortune to bounce around ….I write this off as growing pains and think it was the best opening move – at least we don’ t have to deal with “why are server transfers so expensive” for the long hall…you know that would have been a complaint …at least now the players themselves can explain why and nip that complaint right in the bud!

I am thoroughly enjoying wvw. Yes there are issues such as the orbs, but I still enjoy the game regardless.

It can get demoralizing when losing but we managed a comeback last week to steal second spot after being around 40k points behind from the weekend, so it is possible to get back into matches you are losing.

We have to remember the game is less than 2 months old. Changes will be made to improve WvW.

I have no issue with free transfers at the moment for all its faults it allows servers to make alliances and maybe recruit guilds from different time zones in order to have a 24h presence. Otherwise servers like Deso, Far Shivers, SF and Blacktide will never be able to compete with the likes of Viz Sq, Elona and Arborstone who all seem to have pretty much 24h coverage.

Long term idea – come on…..implement that and you take away tactics from the game, working as groups and achieving objectives is what WVW is all about, not just how many of the opposing server you can kill. You have Spvp if you want points for kills.

I think you guys need to realize the score MEANS NOTHING. Go out with a guild of people/randoms and just have fun trying to take a single keep, or to defend against terrible odds.
There are far to many variables for entire servers to be balanced. WvW is not balanced, ANet said that right from the start. Its not like the winners get something for “winning” at the end of the week.

How is it fun to run out and get crushed by 5 times your group size over and over and over …

You either PvE a door and hope the zerg doesnt show up before you take it down. Only with porting the zerg can be almost anywhere quickly. So you wander around taking supply camps and vacating them just as quickly as to not be zerged.

When you do engage in a fight, and try to extend you find that people NEVER stop chasing you. I have had at most 30 people, follow our group from North end to south end.

There are 2 things that need to change ASAP for WvW. First, the free transfers have to stop. The score imbalance is compounded drastically by the fact so many people will hop to the server that is beating theirs in the hopes to be on top, or on their way to the top. Second, there needs to be more incentive to push and keep trying even when losing. The rewards for participating in WvW simply do not provide enough incentive to keep losing teams in a competitive frame of mind. Once the score gap has grown large enough, the participation drops off in a big way.

I joined JQ because of the many DAOC vets that were apparently headed there, so I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. However it is sad to see the negative impact all the free transfer bandwagon hoppers have. Not only because of longer queue times, but also because of how other servers look at our successes and failures.

I can actually see servers throwing matches soon just to shake the scrubs clutching at their boots trying to be dragged to easy wins.

Issue here is cost/benefit.
If you feel you need to pay more while getting less benefit; aka repair cost and grief vs. rewards for doing stuff – few people will play that game.

It’s easy to say ‘wait X weeks’ when there’s a) no guarantee it’ll be different and b) it’s a game with competing games and more competition coming.

Sure, blame players for wanting fun when playing and if they’re not having fun are opting out of the WvW, but it’s hurting those of us who do want to be in WvW mainly, when it’s either empty from your side or you’re outzerged and run over consistently by the enemy. And then it’s not fun having to wait weeks to maybe be able to play the game again.

The score is the beginning of the snowball effect that is causing pretty much every match to be so lopsided. It’s a huge demoralizer for the casual player – and sometimes even the competitive ones.

Players that are on this forum are already, for the most part, the type of player that will ignore the score and continue to play regardless. However, 99% of the populace is not like this. Open your eyes, we need the casual players to make this thing work. They will see an insurmountable score and NOT EVEN TRY, or even worse transfer to the winning server.

I’m fine with allowing free transfers till the end of time, however you must be locked out of the current WvW match, and possibly the next. Make the decision something that cannot be taken lightly.

Score > Server Transfers > Orb Bonuses are in order – the problems plaguing WvW.

A lot of us (I’m on SBI) do not want to win right now. Personally, I’ve stopped playing in an effort to lower our rankings so that our server doesn’t get ruined by free server xfers. That last thing I want is for all these server jumpers to see us winning and decide to switch over to SBI.

This is just an fyi, not an excuse. I don’t know how many others outside of my social circle are doing this also but everyone I know has no desire to win right now because winning actually equals a permanent loss for your server community.

I don’t care about winning if it means we will suddenly be hit with even worse queue times and traitors who care more about being on the winning side than about the battles themselves. I, for one, hope that people see our server as a lazy bunch of nobodies and stay on JQ until the free xfers are done.

We can’t see the score-you get home from work and being a member of the blue tea, go into WvW. You open up the map and the green team owns 85% of all maps. But because you can’t see the score, you think people will have an interest to WvW?

They need to at the very least add rewards for defending and building defenses. More people want things just given to them I personally dont care you will see me in wvw whether we are winning or loosing trying my best. Anet does need to do something about balancing wvw numbers it is ridiculous 10v 100+ no matter how good you are you cant stand up to that many trust me. i personally killed 5-8 on my own but there are so many they just rez others as soon as you kill them.

Short term:
1. Disable all transfers to high population servers.
2. Swap out the Orb Bonus and the Outmaned Bonus.

2. I initially thought this was a bad idea, but on second thoughts it might just work. I will go with a tentative “Yes” on this one.

Mid-Term
1. Remove Downed State Mechanics from WvW. Keep the ability to resurrect players however. This would benefit small scale group tactics versus zergs.
2. Give Server Entrances permanent siege weapons to combat zone campers.
3. Give Server Entrances a supply resource.

1. No. Small scale group tactics should not benefit you vs zergs.
2. No. There are exits to the side from the spawn area. Use those.
3. No. Putting supply at spawn will make people teleport back to the waypoint just to pick up supply, and they won’t be incentivised to take camps.

Long-Term
1. Halve the points acquired from holding objectives. Reward 1 point for each pvp kill. This would make pvp more important and would also make defending a more vital role than just zerg sweeping the map.

Maybe, but I believe that zergs would accumulate more single points for kills under this system than small groups.

I will reiterate this here, so if you read it elsewhere, my apologies:

One idea I had which might help a little is what I am calling the “Garrison Mechanic”. Each realm has a set number of guards in it’s Garrison. These will be spread across all the keeps/tower that realm owns, so if they have only a few keeps, each keep/tower has more guards. If they have lots of keeps, they have less guards per keep/tower.
e.g. If you have 2 towers, you have 6 guards per tower, if you claim another, you have 4 guards per tower (not actual numbers).

This could lead to unusual tactics such as allowing your home towers to fall in order to bolster the guards at SM. Heck, you could even give bolster guards with power/toughness as part of the Outmanned buff.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

You have too narrow a view. Think bigger picture. Think cause and effect. Think snowballing. This is purely psychological.

Consider Server A,B,C

Server A has a score of 150,000 and has +400 / tick
Server B has a score of 60,000 and has +175 / tick
Server C has a score of 30,000 and has +120 / tick

Think about it from the perspective of a casual player (not one of us who login regardless) from server B or C during this time. If you see the above server scores what is your motivation to join? You’re getting destroyed already so you’re not going to join. If each casual player thinks this, than NONE of them join. If there were 30 of these casual players on at this time, which is a quite modest figure, they could be the difference between forming a big enough group to tackle some of the bigger objectives and not. So the downward spiral continues.

If this casual player can’t see the score – what’s preventing him from joining? And if this one player joins what’s to say the other 30 won’t as well? Once you get all these guys in together some things can happen. Instead of a few of you standing at the spawn-in there’s many and morale starts to go up. Objectives start to get taken. The whole time we can’t see the score. All we know is that we’re fighting for our server and having a great time doing it. The downward spiral is kept in check. Even if their server is down by 100,00 points they have no clue and couldn’t care less. Out of sight, out of mind.

You see, the biggest problem with the score is psychological. It’s demoralizing to the average player. WvW goes from playing to have fun to playing to get the highest score. That’s not the intended design for any casual PvP game mode, one that requires a certain population threshold be met from each server to remain fun and interesting for all parties.

We need to remove any and all factors that prevent someone from wanting to join the fight.
