Breaking from the tradition of endless complaining about WvW, I just wanted to say I spent about 5 hours following around a commander, hopping maps, storming keeps, defending towers, getting killed in bold charges and desperate defenses, managing my inventory, and peeling off occasionally to spread chaos, divert the enemy from the real attack or just plan run supply.

And it was FUN.

I banged out half a reward track, got my second piece of Triumphant armor, earned a couple WvW levels/points, probably put one of my alts about a quarter of the way through Elite Specialization school and actually cared enough to used food and XP multipliers (which I almost never do).

Thanks for a nice evening, WvW. I look forward to doing it again sometime.

Well, this is WvW.

Most games are a 20-30 minute match, then it repeats. WvW can be hours of continous fighting.

Fondest memory is still the early days when we had 4+ hour battles in garrison. No other maps, no running around other places, just hours upon hours of 3 entire servers fighting over the same objective because defenders kept bannering the lord, lol.

It IS fun on those nights. The problem is, it could be so much more, and that just bugs the players that care to make posts on how they think WvW could be improved. Unfortunately, lack of communication from ANet is stifling the game mode.

There is no one single element of WvW that is as fun for every player. The open world format and variety of gameplay can appeal to many player types.

As example some hate sieges. One of my most fun nights was spending hours whittling away at Hills where an enemy had entrenched themselves so as to break the defenses down and finally take the place. It took hours and there were lots of fights but it was fun.

Others think fun all about large scale battles. Some prefer roaming with 1v1’s encountered. Some like holing up with 5 fending off 20 from within a keep. Some like to roam in groups of 10 and have battles against the same. Some like it all.

I tend to like it all to varying degrees and think it imperative the variety of gameplay preserved and ANET not cater to a specific section of the population.

Yep, when WvW works, it is the most fun I think I’ve ever had in a game.

I remember those fights, especially the legendary 14 week AR-BP-EB matchup. Dear god the fights we had (I was on EB then)…spent 6 hours once just trying to keep Bay, it was T3 and had holes all over, and our forces were pouring in whenever the small window occurred when you could port in. It was just a 3 way push on all sides, with none of them coming out on top. It only changed when our SEA group got on and managed to help turn the tide enough to push both out. Those were the days…

But now all we have are the 2 hour endless zerg pushes out in EBG, with one group wiping another, and then immediately moving to the 3rd group. The outcome only changing once 2 sides decide to focus on only one. This btw happened last night, and was really fun.

While my server is just way to op for the tier we are in, the time of mornings I play, I have had some of the most fun. The fights have been awesome, and we have had our butts kicked many a time, and have failed at taking stuff countless times.

The servers we are against, are just putting up some amazing fights, and I thank them for it. My toon has been stomped on many a time. You guys rock, and fight with some amazing heart and skills.

I also have a lot of fond memories of battles, some of them are years old with commanders and guilds that don’t exist anymore, some of them months old and some of them happened in the last weeks. I still very much enjoy WvW, the people/community and the fights. It’s even better now that we can mostly ignore pve and still get our gear, weapons and tokens just by doing what we love.

I have lots of respect for all the groups that still dare to fight even if they are outnumbered and all the guys that still run vanilla builds. It may not always be successful, but when it is, you really get a kick out of it.

Good times running to the lords room, banner, die, rinse, repeat. Just holding a zerg there for 12 mins while you slowly poke at the weak ones till they melt away into the waters.

Then came the 20 min mesmer/thief combo search….

I do not miss that one bit. I miss the WvW tournaments and how they got all the PvE players into WvW, zergs of players from T9 to T1.

Far, far too much doom and gloom is talked about WvW, especially on these forums. Yes, the populations are down (a lot) from a few years back and yes, there is a lot of wasted potential, but even playing EU hours on an NA server in T3/T4 there are always plenty of people on from all three teams, plenty of action, plenty of fights, loads of fun. Hell of a lot better than T1 ever was, that’s for sure, although that’s another issue….

The strangest thing about WvW after all the recent changes is that some weeks I have the option of playing on more than one side in the same match. I have three accounts and the first two are on the same server but when I made my third one I deliberately picked a server that was, at the time, five tiers below my regular one, to get some variety while specifically avoiding any conflict of interest. Then with the linking and glicko resets and abandonwagoning I find I have characters on two out of three teams in the same match.

That certainly puts a different perspective on things. I absolutely do not use the information to spy, but I have swapped accounts to go defend my smaller server’s Keeps against my larger server’s attacks and that’s added a huge amount of extra excitement and interest, especially with my wife in the attacking horde.

Gives me a much better perspective on the perception and opinions other servers hold about the ones I’m playing on, too. Some of the criticisms in both directions have more validity than I’d previously recognized, while some remain unfounded prejudice.

I do miss some of the “Fun” commanders. Had one that had us all remove our armor, and go after stuff. Someplace, a commander has a pic of my toon, with 20 others at the hills, with no armor on after we took it.

The compander known as “grandpa” would have some of the most silly golem rushes I have seen. He would build a zerg of 40 and even 50 golems, lol, everything just melted.

I miss that commander.

There’s a core group that plays NA time on Piken each evening. They always always always make me laugh. One Dutch commander jumps in a golem and solos towers and doesn’t care if anyone follows him or not. It’s probably why I’ll never leave Piken, there’s so many .. um .. characters
