Q:
I stopped playing GW2 for about a year, when now I have gotten back into it. The problem is, I feel like I am to weak in WvW, as if any player can simply kill me with ease. Wasn’t the whole point of WvW to auto-level everyone up to level 80 and make it pretty balanced, cause right now I feel like level 40 in WvW.
I am not saying the system is bad, in fact I find the GW2 WvW system one of the best, I am just wondering if anyone has any tips to improve my WvW gameplay?
Thank You!

Basic stuff:
hmm check the newest builds and also avoid rangers. they can 1 rapid fire u in seconds to death. bring reflects good condi cleanse and dont go zerk. check the meta builds and follow a grou. thats what i did for 3 days to get slowly back into it. and i did quit for a year aswell.
Depends on what you are doing. But the biggest thing I did was keep my equipment close to my level. Usually stacked power and vit. Or if low enough you only have one stat I went vit. Makes it rough to kill any one but you won’t get insta ganked.
How often you re equip I guess I would base off how often you level. In wvwvw I did it every 10 or so. In eotm. I never really felt the need to care and just equipped whatever random crap dropped.
It’s not your father’s WvW. Everyone runs a condibunker cheddar build. If it’s not a medigod or a hammer war, it’s ranged. It’s very, very exciting. Ferocity and buffing conditions really was one of the more troll maneuvers the devs have made. There are some builds on Metabattle, but ultimately you can either suffer along slowly with more fun builds or stop playing entirely and roll a Thief or a Lamebow.
Because of trait changes, if you aren’t level 80, you are, take a charr’s saying ‘easy meat’.
Uplevels are not that strong anymore. You are primarily just a rallybot in a lot of situations. This isn’t to say that you can’t be effective, but you have to gear properly and play like you are glass without being able to do the damage of a glass cannon >.>

I also experienced the same problems when I returned after several months. I was able to turn things around by upgrading all my gear to ascended. This has made an enormous difference. I run full zerker(thief) and am able to withstand a great amount of punishment. But I am also able to deal a tremendous amount of damage – at will. I can wipe 90% of the players on the field from casters to guardians. When I’m outnumbered I just disappear in a puff of smoke :-)
Ascended trinkets are worth getting for a level 80, but ascended armor is meh. You can but it’s not needed. Stat gain is mediocre. A goal but not a necessity.
You need to find your inner lamer and start to use some ultimate cancer build.

naa, I’d goto spvp if I wanted that :P
I was away a year and came back and experienced the same thing. I thought, geeze, I’m so far behind now.
Turns out I was just rusty and needed to get back into it again, cos I’m fine now. Even with basically the same setup as last year.

I’d say the main difference now is you really have to watch your feet a lot more as a front-liner (stability gets stripped faster and you can get caught up by venom wells), and your positioning as a back-liner (pick teams).
Overall, though, it’s much the same dynamic as, like, WvW Season 2.
Thank You guys for all the help!

I don’t think the up-level system was put there to make it even ground for everyone, otherwise it would be like sPvP’s up-level system instead.
I think the point of the up-level system was so that you COULD go into WvW for fun or to explore and not be COMPLETELY useless/disadvantaged. If you want to be on as even footing as possible for the least amount of work, get to 80, get a single set of exotic gear standard for your profession WvW, and enjoy. That is, assuming you’re saying you’re underleveled.
If you are just feeling like you’re far behind despite being level 80, it’s probably just because you’re rusty/are not familiar with the flow of battle right now. If you’re in a zerg, you need to get used to how things are right now. There are new factors to consider, such as changes to stability and venom share being popular. Plus people are more and more familiar with the game as time goes on of course, so the movements of a zerg, even a militia zerg, are going to be more advanced than a year or two ago. And if you’re roaming that is dependent on individual skill, which means your team away is likely hurting you even more there.

The main thing, as far as I can see (after getting to level 80) is get soldier gear – makes a massive difference.
WvW is laggy (I’m personally, generally, on something ridiculous, like 4 or 5 fps, in a really big zerg on zerg situation), so even if you are really used to your class and weap abilities etc. and have good reflexes, you will still need survivability stats on gear to try to counter that.
Then it’s positioning in relation to the commander – melee on top of him and ranged. generally, behind.
After that, it seems to be about playing the “right” classes, although I’m just ignoring that and waiting for Anet to sort out issues with imbalance, because that is only fair.
I get that a well balanced group is good, but I figure that us all playing the same three, or four, classes isn’t the answer, as it will just make them think they can ignore the others.

Yeah…
People try to claim that gear doesn’t make much of a difference, in this game, but I’m not buying that, at all.
Even ascended jewellery and accessories help a lot, so I bet full ascended gear makes a huge difference.
What people seem to forget, when they say it doesn’t make much of a difference, is all those times when you’re hanging on by a thread, with 10% health left, vs being in a downed state/dead.
Even relatively small differences can make a big difference when it comes to a life and death situation.
Oh and yeah, thief does seem pretty OP, to me (in a 1 on 1, or more likely a 2 on 1, situation!), despite all their pitiful whining about rangers…
No offence to you – you seem like an honest thief.

You’re going to see greater returns upgrading accessories and weaponry over armor. The stat differential is greater with weapons and accessories, especially compared to the price of upgrading all 6 armor pieces.
