WvW is about team organization and cooperation. Whether players are grouped into servers or alliances, the game mode still requires “team organization and cooperation”. That is next to impossible to do when players are reluctant to join or form guilds that have dedicated WvW teams. I’m sure you have all now been on an “unorganized” PvE map and know what I’m talking about. Don’t like the rules of a particular guild? Start your own!

Alliances and mega-server are not going to really “save” WvW. WvW has been heading in a more casual direction for a long time and mega-server will only accelerate it to EOTM-like casual game play. The average size of a guild has been shrinking since launch. The days of many servers having that one huge anchor guild with dedicated WvW activity with “night crews” disappeared long before HoT. If that idea bothers you, get organized!

Im one of the leaders of an established roam/havoc/home defend guild. And getting used to terrain is one thing but we do try to roam, yet theres barely anything that fights back that is not on an AI. Get some human interaction on the upgrades ( im not asking back for the old one even though i loved it) and i am sure people will find other people to fight cause you have to be at point A to upgrade it. Right now it is cap and leave with the thought of “it upgrades anyway whether im there or not”.

You start your own guild when it requires massive amount of gold and materials to get wvw upgrades. The cost of upgrades not only makes small guilds useless in wvw but also prevents any new guilds appearing.

I am already pretty poor by trying to upgrade one guild. You think if I leave and join other guild, I will start to throw mats and gold on this endless dump again?

This post is addressed at the casual player who remains mostly guild-less or runs a small personal bank guild. Not sure how you interpreted it into a suggestion that you leave, especially when players can be members of up to five guilds.

The most active wvw players I know are in guilds with 1-2 members or no guild at all. “WvW-guilds” usually have to stage raids to get their members on the map. According to my humble friendlist and huge blacklist those people mostly frolic through pve, often eb, occasionally spvp. That’s my experience of three years WvW on two servers in silver and gold. But I’m sure people will disagree and tell tales of servers where guilds are really running the show.

Coordination and communication is a thing done by individuals and groups across the map, unless we talk of two or more zergs coordinating or zerg-internal things. Sorry, guild-group-internal things. In fact most guilds remain very silent, possibly because they don’t want to attract pugs to mess up their furry-conventions. Sorry, scrims. Every party or squad can use TS or chat or smoke-signals I don’t know what guilds would have to do with that.

I don’t like the idea of alliances or mega-servers either, but identity in WvW is the people I meet and see and play with most of the time and very few of those are in “WvW-guilds”, sorry.

Unfortunately with the recent changes being part of a WvW guild is sort of pointless. Besides, a lot of guilds rotate around friendships that transcend a single game. I think that is the fundamental issue that GW2 missed about guilds in general. If guilds serve no significant in-game purpose and are basically vanity tags, why bother?

I think you missed my point which is that WvW guilds are basically vanity tags. Prior to HoT, playing while rep’ping in WvW helped out a guild. Post HoT, why should a WvW player join a guild? Guilds in WvW are almost completely meaningless now.

When terms like “proper” are used when talking about builds and tactics, what does that really mean? What if a proper build is run by the roaming ranger in your guild assigned to scout ahead and pick off other scouts and havoc, or a proper tactic is having a small havoc team that breaks off from your main group and is available to regroup for larger fights? A casual player following a tag will typically do next to none of those things. Often they’ll feel lost.

WvW is not always about a hammer train. There are many different types of guilds to fit playstyle with different defining charters or mission statements.

Apologies…I was too busy dancing to kungfu fighting.

On a serious note…you’re totally correct.

Representing a Guild in WvW earns absolutely nothing.

Daily Guild points don’t go up now. If your guild isn’t big enough to get upgrades…you’re nothing.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

It’s another oversight by ANet.

I mentioned this in another thread about how the Little League baseball teams are kept out of the ball park. Only Minor or Major League baseball teams are allowed to use the ball park facilities.

We can only have wishful thinking that ANet will realize that many of the Little League baseball teams eventually will provide the players to the Minor or Major League teams.

If they continue to do this…the future growth of the sport will be in jeopardy.

I kind of put the blame on ANet for allowing players to be a part of 5 different guilds. You can really only serve one master. Unfortunately the days of the 100% rep guilds are seemingly over, to the detriment of the game imo.

Best times I’ve had in GW2 was being a part of EK, which was a 100% rep WvW guild. Raiding 5 days a week, and knowing there would be minimum 25 players showing up every single day was awfully nice. It’s pretty bad to login and see so many members on, but repping other guilds.

Then the question is why do they rep other guilds?

I am a member of four guilds (although I admit one is very very small), and I appreciate the different levels fo support each has to offer. My main guild is mostly PvX with some WvW action (no, I know that’s not a dedicated WvW guild and it doesn’t matter – what I do is what matters). I am also a member of a smaller more dedicated WvW guild. I’m really grateful to both – they both support me with help if I call out and both allow me access to resources I wouldn’t have on my own. Before the guild cata nerf my PvX guild missions were my best source of cheap guild catas. I’m just sorry that new players will bot know why this was important.

One of the good things about HoT is the fact that I can now see Guild chat for each guild I belong to and so I can respond to call outs from any. Sadly I get less of these at the moment, but that’s a topic for another thread.

I would whole heartedly agree – join a guild or two – you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Hmm, a few months ago I would fully agree with this topic. But I changed my mind, so I’m partial disagree with joining a wvw guild. Why? Because other players tell you how you should play your professions, they don’t accept different playstyles or opinions, maybe it’s all about Meta or their own builds.

If you don’t play their builds you risk a kick. For example: All necros should be only play range and use wells. Hello? Why all? I absolutely hate this playstyle (died to often), I prefered always the melee necro (died almost never in a zergfight). Every build has his weakness. Different builds can balanced this, that’s my opinion, but all the wvw guilds I’ve met in almost 3 years have never accepted this. Let me be clear, I’ve no problems with recommended builds from guilds, I take them as inspiration, but I would prefer the guild would optimized your build and not forced you in playstyle you might hate.

I agree, if you share the same goals like the wvw guild or you are new to this part of the game, then you should join a wvw guild.

Here’s the thing.

I love the folks on my server. Fantastic people. We all get along really well.

I want to keep them that way.

There’s a harmony of cooperation, and I guess that’s why the only time I don’t post polyanna posts is when I feel that source of community is threatened. Otherwise, it’s all sunshine and roses, and I’ll find a way to work with this new thing, etc.

My experience is that when you combine a bunch of people (particularly online) into any kind of group with a leader designate and officers, etc, it does work well for some. But eventually more numbers = drama. Sometimes you don’t even need the numbers.

I deal with resolving issues at work.

I deal with resolving issues at home with my family.

I do not want to have to do the same during my leisure time.

I used to run a 350-man guild on another game. I spent the bulk of my time stomping out personal fires and drama between guild mates than I did actually playing the game.

In the end, I choose to run solo and work between multiple guilds. Having no alliances to one guild over another, I can maximize my effectiveness, while still keeping out of the big stuff that goes on within the guilds themselves behind the scenes.

I’m happier that way. And I’m a more effective member of my server’s team that way too.

And I know I’m not alone in this. I think this is why the bulk of each server’s defense team are solo players that work well together, but still want their independence.

Perhaps I have commitment issues

In this specific case it is so that all builds synergize with each other and make the team stronger. If there is a reason to still play in a guild, this is it. Creating team focused builds that other teammates can rely on and predict is the name of zerg busting game.

We do this on the small scale with our guild. If you see one of us in the distance, you are about to be blowed up as our builds are designed to close long distances fast, stack a series of lock downs, spike damage on a single target and move out. Funny as hell blowing someone up in the middle of their zerg.

( Hi Dora!!)
With the new Reaper build though there is finally a tanky Frontline meta Necro build now that still has power and can live forever, so it is like getting your cake and eating it too. I agree that you are having to alter builds/ play style in order to play with a guild to do what it best for the team, but that is the same with any team sports. That is the primary difference between solo play vs group play. Whether it is playing on a baseball team, a guild or a server, doing what is best for the team more often than not means compromising on some of the things we may want to do so that we can win fights and be more competitive. Now if you are a natural born 2nd baseman and you love playing 2nd base, that role was made just for you, but sometimes you want to be a pitcher, but you were better at 2nd base, sometimes that means you play 2nd base because that is what is good for the team at that time if you want to be a team player.

It is often difficult for more casual players to compete or sustain in such a competitive environment where everything matters from what armor, weapons, runes, sigils, traits, infusions, party composition, timing and what order you use your skills in to survive, or you could rally the other team and cause your team to wipe if you go down. In a team environment such as WvW, if you die, you can cause your whole team to wipe due to the enemy players rallying off of your death. These things matter in group play for the survivability of the group is why so much emphasis is placed on them.

Yes you have more freedom when you say screw all that and do what you want, but you also cause more server dependence on the rest of the group to carry the weight when doing so. If everyone just “plays how they want” not thinking about the team, eventually they will get facerolled by an organized team. It brings down the level of competitive game play and ability of what your team can accomplish when everyone just does their own thing.

Really? Sounds like a leadership/player choice problem then. Those are some things my guild has been doing when we felt it was needed; going back as far even as the no-white-swords “event”. We get players with mixed interests, abilities, and time commitments in my guild. It is easier to fit the role to a player rather than shoehorn someone into a role they can’t fulfill. Being adaptive also allows players to explore other classes and roles and not burn on out always being required to play their “main class”.

Right now as long as you have a guild that is capable of producing the high-end consumables for claimed objectives, the smaller guilds have a great thing they can do. For instance, if the main guild on the map claims the keep, but has the ability to produce speedy dolyaks and armored dolyaks, they can’t use those on the keep for obvious reasons. However, if a smaller guild claims a camp, which isn’t nearly so hard to upgrade their war room for, then the larger guild can slot their yak buffs into the camp claimed by the smaller guilds. By working together, the larger and the smaller guilds can achieve more than either could separately.

Allowing the player some freedom will in the end keep the player more interested while enjoying how they play. I don’t see how that could ever be a bad thing for the player or the guild. This may not work for the ultra competitive guild, but they seem to crash and burn faster as well….

Take a sip when:

  • Someone says kitten, gay, kitten (d), or any other racial or sexual term/slur.
  • Someone mentions boobs or porn.
  • Someone mentions drugs or booze.
  • When someone yells for apparently no reason.
  • If someone sneezes, burps, or farts.

Finish your drink when:
