Looking to Create WvW Class - Opinions Wanted
Mesmer is the best choice imo.. Currently a Mesmer can do almost anything. I hear that people have issues with leveling, but I never did. I have played a War,Ele,Guard, and an Eng. Nothing compares to the mesmer once you get decent with him. (IMO before the forums warriors descend on me)

If you aren’t looking for the best class then this is the wrong part of the forums to be asking. Your first response has already stated the the Mesmer is the “best” choice. I think it would be more beneficial to yourself to ask what type of playstyle you enjoy and then go from there.
Do you want outright DPS? Condition Damage? Survivability?

Condition damage is something I want to stay away from due to the fact that I have built my Necro around that.
Apart from that, I guess DPS mixed with some level of control would be pleasant.
Thanks for the replies, a lot more constructive than I assumed would be posted
With mesmer you can control a fight very well. Imo Mesmer is by far the best force multiplier. Hands down. Time warp, mass invis, Veil, aoe conf, Feedback, portal, temp curtain, warden, null field. The list goes on and on. Check out the Immortal mesmer guide in the mesmer forums.. He has some nice videos demonstrating the abilities of the mesmer.
Other than mesmer though I would say the Guard was the 2nd most fun..

Mesmer is definitely an excellent choice if you want DPS and some amount of control. Personally I would recommend a Ranger, but I know most people will immediately say they suck. They have some of the highest base DPS and have enough traps and slows to rain on someone’s parade.
If you are unsure of things, I recommend making a class, complete starting area, and then immediately travel to the Heart of the Mists. From there you will be able to gear accordingly, fiddle with traits as you desire, and get a good idea as to how your character will perform against other players in the long run. I test most of my WvW builds thoroughly in tPvP and it works out great.
Cheers.

If you are solo, go for DD ele, crazy mobility crazy aoe
If you have ppl more than 5+ go for mesmer.
try out a glamour mesmer, ts very effective in wvw. I used to run an ele and din’t click with it, so i tried our ranger, didn’t click either and then i tried mesmer and fell in love. I’ve recently changed my build to glamour mesmer and get tons of badges and kills each time I play. But maybe u ’ll click with a different build too. check out all the builds and u ll see each one provides a different game play experience.

Best thing to do is to spend a good chunk of time on several different classes. Everyone here seems to most be suggesting mesmer. However, this class is not for every one and does not suit every ones play style. I really like my warrior the most so far. I can build him several different ways the play straight dps or sacrifice a bit significantly more defense, but still do substantial damage. I can also build him tanky and help support the group. The class is great for small group, zerg, and 1v1.
I’ve also played pretty much every other class. I usually suggest take your time in making up your mind. Play the classes you want to try in several different builds and gear. If you don’t have the time to level all the classes up I suggest trying them out in sPVP. While this isn’t exactly like WvW it offers you a very good idea on how the class will perform at cap and how it will play. It will also allow you to play better players who will better assist you in determining how well you know said build or how well that class and build will play in a pvp situation.
Determine what kind of play style you are really looking for. Warriors can play the roll of dps and cc as you stated above. Engineer is also very good at this and very under played and IMO welcomed being that they are much more rare. DD eles are good too but they are very cookie cutter and show up like they come off an assembly line. Not to mention they are very easy to do well at. Guardians another great class I would recommend.
Play the classes that sound interesting to you and try several builds on them and see what you like. No one can tell you what you will like the most. They can only make suggestions. You need to spend enough time to see what you actually like.

Depends on what you want.
Mesmer is bad kitten /p>
Hammer warrior is no slouch when in a group.
Thief is good solo/small party.
Guardian can be a beast with boon stacking and damage
D/D ele is FotM worthy ATM.
I mean anything can be good depending if it jives with you.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
Mesmers are arguably the most broken of the “assassin” classes. It amazes me how people rage about glass cannon thieves but everyone seems to forget how Mesmers can drop 8k shatters like it’s just another day at the office. Roll one if you want I just think there are too many of them as it is and it is one of the more boring DPS classes as you can honestly just hit your head against the keyboard and get kills.

Mesmer or Ele. Both are useful for 100% of things in WvWvW. Its just a matter what kind of style and type you prefer.
Take both classes for a spin and just see which clicks better with you.
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”
My only issue with mesmer is the lack of reliable swiftness that is available to all other classes besides guardians. You pretty much have to have a focus offhand, personally I’d love to be able to go GS/staff for fitting my play-style even if it isn’t optimal. I have a mesmer alt and my phantasms and clones mostly get aoe-ed before they reach the shatter target. But there is no doubt that mesmers bring a ton of god-like utilities and force multipliers to WvWvW. Time warp, mass invis, Feedback, portal, and null field are kitten near OP.
It depends what you’re looking for OP. My main character since release has been a Mesmer because I love the non-traditional style of fighting it entails. Mesmers have some really fun and interesting utilities to mess around with such as portal, feedback and blink., that I think you’d enjoy messing around with. They’re probably best in smaller battles where the confusion caused by multiple clone deployment can really shine, but with elites such as Timewarp and mass invisibility you can also add a lot to a zerg force.
@Too Frisky – I’m hitting my head against the keyboard and weirdly I’m not getting any kills. It’s almost as if WvW is full of many competent individuals playing many different classes, who are more than capable of killing Mesmers.
Actually necros are essential in an organised WvW group for their group blinds. If you don’t like it though you can try a thief for solo roaming, or guard/war for groups.

really good range and damage, and supporting weapons have great utility/control (rifle, toolkit)
dont bother w/ grenade kit till its got the trait though, level up other ways (turrets are nice and easy in pve).
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
So after reading replies and looking at other info sources on the interwebs, I was thinking ELE, not D/D ele but maybe staff or other long ranged weapon.
Good idea? Bad Idea?
Thanks once again
Hammer Guardian is fun. Its melee— but you get a good amount of blocks, healing, and you hit like a brick to the face.
Hammer Warriors are also fun and in the same vain and offers some cool play options—- such as hammer gun builds that give you range and strong melee——— or hammer bunker builds that bring strong dps and strong survivability.
This thread is silly.
Most classes can be relevant in both large scale and still survive-ish (but not be top-tier) in 1v1 / small scale.
If you want damage output in large scale as well, that narrows it down to (in no particular order):
1. Ranger
2. Elementalist
3. Mesmer
4. Engineer possibly
Among those, Mesmer has the least AOE but most raw utility. Ranger is the most broad (can range AOE, DPS, CC, and have additional utility). Elementalist is potent in all areas, but typically not within the same spec, and usually not with the same weapon. Engineer is also broad, similar to Rangers, but I don’t know enough about them to comment in detail.
All 4 of those classes can generally survive and get away in “1v1”, although it is rather build dependent for some of them. Rangers are probably the weakest of those 4 in solo / small scale (at least, if the Ranger is built to be competent at large scale).
As the other poster said, your best bet is to roll each class and play them in sPvP to see which one you like the most. Give each a good 10 hours, using random builds and some builds copied off the forums.
Mesmer is the best choice imo.. Currently a Mesmer can do almost anything. I hear that people have issues with leveling, but I never did. I have played a War,Ele,Guard, and an Eng. Nothing compares to the mesmer once you get decent with him. (IMO before the forums warriors descend on me)
But a BIG draw back to mesmer in WvW is swiftness. And even self swiftness sucks because unlike 99% of other classes ours does not stack in duration like theirs. So most time mesmers are the caboose even in a zerg.
Just putting that out there for OP.
Try out classes and builds in SPVP first to see if it’s even your style.
I’d say a tanky warrior or tanky guardian. Lets you be up front with the zerg so it’s not as boring and you get to stand up and do lotsa things in smaller battles.
