Q:
I’d really like to know the reason for implementing this in the WvW environment:
In WvW, if you’re not lvl 80, why is there a green arrow next to your level? It’s a big fat target for the opponent saying “hey! I’m low level, I’m right here, come get me!”
I can imagine this is a big turn-off for newer players who jump into wvw and get slaughtered everytime, even when they run in a group, because the enemy always, always focusses them first. And I can’t blame the enemy, because I would do it too if I were them.
But I always feel bad seeing those lvl 10 players being chased every time an enemy spots them, especially when they have the choice to follow an enemy that’s really lvl 80 or that lvl 10 guy. They always go for the low lvl, every single time.
The green arrow should be removed or atleast not be visible for your opponents. Just like the [looking for group] icon, which can be seen through gates and walls btw (not sure if they fixed it yet? nobody uses the LFP anymore because of this). It shows exactly where the enemy is, without having to see them. Basically legit wallhacks.
Since you said that next month will be a month of bug fixes, I decided to post this now. Hopefully it’ll be taken into consideration.
Thanks
Its undoubtedly a side effect from how the level scaling is shown in PvE, but nevertheless. I agree that it should be changed so that enemies cannot see it. It makes unnecessary targets out of those players and doesn’t serve any beneficial purpose. For allies, it is worth knowing the strength of your troops, given that they still aren’t up to par.
The only downside I see from removing it from enemies is that there will likely be people boasting about their defeating the underlevels without the definitive proof that that is what they did so they’ll claim anything.
What do we care if people chest thump? The uplevels are clear rally bait, which can be used to lose you an openfield fight.
Let’s all wear weapons and armor skins from level 15 then \o/

Transmute whites on your exotics and use the most generic colors possible…
Maybe even use the exact look from the tutorial

Yes but I’m sure ArenaNet didn’t think that them not being able to boast is more important than keeping (especially) new players in the game. Ok sure, they already paid for the game, but each new player is a new potential gemstore buyer.
And tbh, what my level is is none of my enemy’s concern.

Hahaha
Also, a few minutes ago ingame, I encountered 3 enemies, 1 being a low level. (it was 3vs3) Guess who died and who got away. That’s right, the low level died, and the other 2 portalled out.

Running around with my mate who ran a level 50 mesmer with phantasm spec, I noticed, enemies will continue to tunnel vision after the uplevel, who will keep to blink/decoy/distort/daze/block, even, if your lev 80 full exotics drops below 2k hp.
Guess what, theres bad players and good players.
My mate also “killed” a lev 80 exotics bow ranger by casting feedback on him at full hp.
As I said, there’s bad players and good players…
And then, there is HORRIBLE players.
At least leave it on for teammates, that way I know which rally bait to deliver to an enemy zerg then retreat.
It’s funny how rarely I ever notice the up-level indicator. Seriously, almost never notice it. I see the bad guy, I fight the bad guy, period. The nice thing with GW2 combat is how little I need to focus in little indicators or other UI goodies like that and can simply focus on the fight. OK, maybe some kills I’ve managed to bag have been against lower levels without me realizing it and that feeling of eMacho-ness wasn’t fully justified, but I fight everyone the same way I would if I paid attention to their level.
Winning a 1v1 on an upleaveled player against a full lvl 80 is one of the best things in WvW.
Upleveling especially when you get close to lvl 60+ doesn’t stop you from being good, a lot of 80’s have bad builds or playstyles anyway. Having the green arrow is great for making bad players think they can rofl stomp you and they get a big shock when the spike goes through their chest
I’m currently leveling my fifth toon to 80 and have been bringing him in WvW from the start, I don’t think having a green arrow on my head is a bad thing. If I get killed by an 80 they don’t get any satisfaction because I’m up leveled and when I kill them they have to suffer the shame. Nothing better than driving a spike into the chest of the guy who just picked out your green arrow for special treatment.
Green arrow should stay. I occasionally leave up leveled players alone but if that green arrow goes they gunna get stomped 24/7, by lots of players, not just myself…
I find “Dungeon Master” even better than the green arrow as a soft target indicator.

“Distinction in Applied Jumping” pew pew!
Also when I roam with a guild group it the best to call targets: “Focus fat norn with legendary”
Back to the topic when I lead I do tend to focus on upscaled players first as they go down quicker, especially if there’s a group of ~20 against us (5-10). They provide easy kills and their dead body provides a free stun/immobilise field that can affect up to 5 enemies in case they press f (or whatever the hotkey is). When I roam solo I only attack other solo players if they also attack me, otherwise I like to go against groups because it’s a bigger challange. If I see an upscaled guy attack me I down them and then sit next to them while they try to res. Sometimes they keep pressing skill1 until they bleed out tho ><

There is 2 ways of crushing a group: Kick the weakest one or drop the leader.
If they got 5 downed players after the initial burst, they will start to panic, that’s, why it’s good to take out the easy targets first.
The other way would be to pick out the commander and kill him, but that’s way more troublesome than bullying some uplevels.

It’s harder to pick out the leader in a blob of 20-25 especially if they’re not an organised group. Turn it around and you’ll find even being the leader I’m usually the last one to go down. I usully lead on my guardian which is a huge charr with as many spikes and shiney colours as possible, to make it easier to follow. I also have a fractal backpack and those SAB skins just to make it a lot more obvious :P
Before they fix the green arrow they need to change the way rally works. That way we don’t have to have people talking about “rally bait” all the time.
If it’s just a skirmish out in the open, yeah uplevel is a good target, but I usually call targets differently.
If i’m confusion-heavy (even post-nerf it’s still solid) i call out thieves, rangers, fast attackers.
If i’m like…say…war heavy i’ll ask ’em to load up all crowd control and just pick a squishy. or the one that overcommitted and chased us when we all backpedalled a few feet to bait somebody out.
It’s a good starter target (green arrow) but it’s not always rally bait.

True. It’s a lot more challenging and if you win it gives you a good feeling, but in wvw 1v1’s aren’t that common, atleast not for me. But maybe that’s because I rarely attack an enemy unless they attacked me first or if they are trying to kill a dolyak or something.

Our commander is usually also one of the last ones to go down and I think most organized raids experience this. I guess it’s because there’s always ppl around him that will protect him if he goes down or even before he goes down. It’s hard to get to the enemy commander, especially if you’re the only one aiming for him while the rest of your group is “playing normal”. So I rarely even try (only if I see an opening). I just target him so we know where he is and continue play :P
