Make gates the first upgrade.
I have to agree that gates should be upgraded before walls are upgraded, since roaming zergs can siege and PvDoor (which shouldn’t be allowed, but that’s another thread) and down paper gates in no time compared to even paper walls.
Especially with the supposed nerf to treb shots through doors, and likely AC damage through doors to follow, sup rams with masteries on gates is going to be even more OP than it already is.
The whole point of defensive siege is to slow/stop superior numbers.
Making doors the first upgrade would help. Otherwise they will need design new siege or effects to slow down rams.

Agreed. Might turn the tide just a little and add some more epic fights defending structures, giving defenders just a little more time to respond. Also, slowing down the ktrain a tad.
I also agree that pvd shouldn’t be allowed, with maybe, the exception of fire damage… cuz…logical
Could restructure upgrades:
row 1:
~hire merchants
~hire services (bank/repairs)
~hire tp agent
row 2:
~hire additional guards
~raise guard level
~hire guard patrol
row 3:
~build cannons
~reinforce cannons
~build cannon platforms & extend cannon range appropriately (raising cannons to 1500 range, thus also giving rangers more purpose in wvw if traited accordingly)
row4:
~2nd worker
~build mortars
~build wp
row 5:
~gates are resistant to all damage except fire & siege damage
~gates are reinforced
~gates are fortified
row 6:
~infused iron walls (walls randomly ignore/reflect dmg 5% of the attack time, or every 10th hit)
~walls are reinforced
~walls are fortified

(The cannon platform idea was suggested by someone else in the recent thread “Cannons destroying rams through gate”. Too good of an idea to overlook

If there is a legitimate reason why doors are upgraded 2nd, I would love to hear it.
Also, why can’t doors also have a 2nd upgrade like walls?
Playing the devils advocate here; it would seem to be easier to fight off an attacking force choke pointed at a paper gate with rams rather than catapults aimed at walls from a far.
It’s the old bait tactic, I make this choke point look very appealing to go through, only to get destroyed the moment you enter; or in many cases, get destroyed trying to break through.
There was an instance 2 nights ago where my zerk elementalist downed about 10 attackers with a simple meteor shower / lava field / static field / with a slew of chain lightning attacks trying to break down a gate with rams. Now the fact that not one of them thought to attack me or pull me off the wall is beyond me.
Fact is, if they were on catapults from afar attacking the paper walls, well, the tower would have probably been taken. There is no way I would have gone out there; I would have been dead before I reached them.
I do realize that catapults take about double the time as rams so theoretically your map zerg should get there before they get in. Not every map has a roaming force; some servers can’t even muster a roaming force between all 4 maps. Simple solution, choke point.
What I would like to see though another tier added.. one that makes gates immune to PvD.

In theory I agree. Unfortunately when it comes to wall fights above the door, the attackers have the advantage. Which is completely opposite of what it should be.
Yes, it’s frustrating an illogical to have walls upgrade before gates. Paper gates are just one more reason those who value holding on to assets/defending have to almost constantly babysit important structures.
Gates/walls should slow down to a crawl when being destroyed if nobody (or under 5 people) is inside a structure. Gives defenders time to get back. No PvDoor! Go to somewhere filled with people? They can destroy at a normal rate. Just IMO. I freaking hate PvDoor/karma training. Go do that crap in eotm.

what if you just make it so when you cap a structure, it automatically has reinforced walls
i mean with the freakin cata power creep, cata vs ram is pretty much a wash in terms of time to break in when you have paper walls. so just delete paper walls all around, move reinforced gates up to t1, fortify to t2, and a new fortified gate upgrade in t3.

agreed. pvd has to go. that alone would make a huge difference in how this game mode is played…
+1 can’t agree more. Hopefully they will swap out the old towers with the new style EOTM towers where oil is actually useful
