My server is attacking Askalion gate. Enemy server has a catapult behind their gate. Enemy server shoots catapult at their own gate. The catapult’s splash attack damages all of us at the gate and pushes us all away from our rams. Wow! Ridiculous. Fix that please.

Yep, AoE should not go through the gates. However it may not be as simple to do as it seems, or rather, it may be simple but hard on the CPU, considering how many AoE attacks a zerg can deploy per second. At first I though that simply letting siege machines deal friendly fire to keeps is the solution, but players are creative and insidious, and it would be easy for spies to transfer servers to build siege in keeps and destroy them from the inside.

Kill the wall instead of the gate. It takes you like 2hr to bash on the gate before it goes down.

It goes both ways, attacking forces can attack through the gate too.

Their catapult causing trouble for you? Adapt. Build a catapult of your own if you need to. Range and AoE the gate down instead. Try standing further away from the gate when manning rams to see if you can avoid the splash.

Originally this tactic was used as the only viable means to defend an objective as it was one of the few siege weapons that could withstand retaliation damage. With retaliation no longer able to hurt siege it still has the use of knocking people back from the gate, providing some relief for the defenders.

The catapult doesn’t hurt, it’s not much of a threat beyond knocking you back from the gate, so as I mentioned adapt and build a catapult of your own to take the gate or a wall down from a distance.

I’m not sure if it would be unbalancing, hwoever, since defenders could repair without any risk at all. But it also seems very unfair to be hit when you’re behind what would normally be considered hard cover.

There’s arguments both ways. And we’ll just have to see what the devs think.

Its clearly an intended mechanic, and it has several equally clear and valid counters.

If they remove it, you are just going to have fun trying to pound on a gate while the defenders are clear to repair it and you can’t stop them.

Have fun trying to take an upgraded keep that can hold 1700 supply in that case.

Edit: Just to be nice, ill tell you the easiest counter.
Dont drop the ram dead center in front of the doors. Put it to one side. It will still hit the gate and the guy operating the ram can stand far enough away from the door so that the cats cant just keep bouncing him off.

Ya as long as the fix blocks damage in BOTH directions, I can’t wait. It will make things at least a little more realistic.

This may need to be balanced but if people think it gives the defenders too great of an advantage because it is so easy to repair, they could add a skill, or a property, to the rams where when they attack, it causes some internal knock back. That at least seems a little reasonable…a huge ram hitting a gate would knock back the people on the other side.

Regular attacks go through the gate as well. I’ve spammed quite a few Pistol Whips that way resulting in some impressive numbers.

Ya they just need to make it so the gate is like this impenetrable object that nothing passes through. Start there and then if they want to add some like knock back mechanic to siege or to defense, fine.
