I’m sure many people made this suggestion before, but since I saw a dev stating that they appreciate constructive feedback and suggestions I’ll give it a go anyway.
Currently anet is receiving lots of hate from a big part of the wvw community regarding those “strange” matchups.
Very often we get one server which is a bit on par with us, and then we get another one which is like 4 tiers above or below us. This not fun for the server which is completely crushing the other, or for the one in the “receiving” end. A server which is constantly running 70+ groups facing a server running 20-30 people in groups… well i don’t need to explain further.
First thing: please state why the dice roll decides this? I really don’t see the reasoning behind this.
Now, the solution to this can be so easy in my opinion:
Start of with a blank ranking, even RNG/alphabetical order/whatever it if really needed as an initial starting position. Week after week, have the winner go up a tier, and the loser a tier down.
I don’t really think that there’s a more “fair” system than this, and it’s the easiest as well.
The only downside of this is that some servers will never face each other, which means that the GvG community is forced to play the same guilds over and over until there will be a “real” GvG system.
Cool, so T-1 NA after several weeks would end up being BG/SoR/JQ → BG/SoR/TC or some variant of that for weeks on end. 1up1down isn’t really as great as it sounds.
Clockradio’s example is an excellent reason why 1-up-1-down is a bad system.
suppose that JQ and TC are almost equal strength, and the best possible opponents for each other. in 1U1D (also known as WULD — winner up loser down) JQ and TC would never get to play each other. during the weeks that JQ is in T1, TC will be in T2. and the weeks that TC is in T1, JQ will be in T2.
the other reason that WULD is a bad system is because some servers will alternate every week between winning by a lot and losing by a lot — they will never get a competitive matchup where the outcome has any doubt.
if you want to know the details of how the random rolls contribute to the matchups, you can find the details here:

The REAL issue is that a mechanic is needed to balance out population differences between the servers….ultimately there are only so many combinations that can be made between servers… and inevitably there will be some servers too big for their current tier, but too small for the higher tier…. either the scoring system needs to be changed or there needs to be a way to balance the servers that have a much larger population..

You can’t build a rating system based on T1. While the winner up, loser down, might not work well there, it’s not as bad as it seems in the other tiers. It is certainly an improvement over matchups such as 14 vs 21 vs 22.
Besides, dropping a tier isn’t always a bad thing. Look at JQ. They were getting beat up in T1. They spent a couple of weeks in T2 and now look at them.
I agree that it’s not a perfect solution, but imo it’s better than the current implementation.
One example of why it would not work. With this system tier 2 would look like TC,DB and FA. The following week it might be SOR, DB, and SOS. So there would be a guarantee a tier 1 server would fight a tier 3 server every other week.
