Melee useless in WvWvW
If anyone should be complaining about keep warfare it’s Guardians since they don’t get much of a ranged option. Every other class can attack at range, and EVERYONE can use siege. You said it yourself, Warriors can use either a rifle or a longbow and plink away from the keep walls just like anyone else. In addition, there are many other type of combat in WvW other than keep sieges. Maybe you need to get out more.
I have actually seen some great warriors and guardians in WvW. Your problem is you just made it like you mentioned. Since WvW is based around gear, traits, and skills an early leveled warrior would fair pretty poorly. I would say get your warrior into late 60s to 80 and you should have a great time with playing close combat classes.

In short your statements are false.
now I’m going to try and get in here before nastier people start the insults about learning to play etc.
The warrior at present has a lot of viable specs in WvW. I personally do not playh one but play in a guild with a lot of warriors that play and succeed well in WvW.
One thing that might be the issue is are you playing solo, warriors thrive with other players their hammers are fantastic for control and adminishing aoe when combating a zerg. They have glass cannon specs that can nuke rapidly and then retreat.
I play thief and play in melee range and often spend my time hopping in and out of the postern doors wiping people. we also have a 900 range. I think you should look for another class though as clearly this playstyle doesn’t suit you.

Ranger just simply do better in WvWvW.
Yeah warrior is great in zergs… every class is good when its come zerg.
Just would be nice have alt melee for WvWvW and not only 1 class.
Poor, sad warriors… Like it’s not enough for them to be one of the best open field units, they have only 900 range…. How can such cruel thing exist?
I play warrior, I ain’t having any problems with WvW…
Just a different gaming experience than the range classes.
No, melee is not ‘useless’ in WvW. I play a fully geared warrior, running sword/shield/Greatsword.. with a tanky build.
I have 32k hp, 2700 armor and 3200 attack with 35% crit. I use NO ranged weapon.
If you’re running with a skilled squad.. there are plenty of things to do as a purely melee class.. such as:
1. Kill over extenders
2. Run into a fight and kill other players (while your ranged supports you)
ect..
Certain situations I am useless.. defending a keep is pretty boring until they get in or we push out.. but thats why you roll with a good squad
ET
Sad Warriors? Drop your rifle son and pick up GS/Sword+Shield. Since I rolled warrior I never touched ranged weapons beyond just unlocking skills. I am melee all the way in WvWvW and I am as effective as I am on my necromancer.
You have 10% movement speed trait and I suggest you to take it, as well as Mobile Strikes.
…aand of course you need to be 80 to survive in melee brawls… aand avoid Berserker’s gear if you plan to do WvWvW as melee. Best is Power/Vit/Toughness… aand dont go glass cannon build.
ty ansers:) been think about power/toughness/vit build.
What traits i should go for?
Melee would become a lot more important if trebs were changed to now be included in the field to siege reinforced points. Melee would be huge in protecting them.
Hi Junkkis,
I have been playing a Warrior in WvW from lvl 20 to 80 and I can tell you that relying on a ranged weapon is not going to provide you with the best experience on a warrior. We do not shine as a ranged class and I wouldn’t suggest keeping a ranged weapon in your offhand.
That being said, you should be switching your weapons up based on the situation. There may be times that a ranged weapon is useful (like when fighting a Veteran supervisor at a supply camp so you don’t get hit) so I would not give up on rifles and longbows completely.
I currently run with a sword/shield and greatsword combo and signet of rage for high speed travel across the map. This can get you in and out of trouble in a hurry and the shield provides a lot of extra protection in addition to your endure pain, invulnerability buff.
Overall the warrior is best in a group setup. You can find the occasional 1 v 1 and do quite well vs most classes, but usually your strength is going to pick off guys trying to flee the battle, and also breaking enemy front lines. Warriors are great pushers and can really cause chaos to the enemies back line attackers. Just make sure your team is there to back you up when you go running in, otherwise you will be slaughtered 20 v 1 while your team runs the opposite direction.

Hrm… my direct to the point post got nerfed so ill try and be more round about. Don’t zerg around all the time. Try some small man (5 or less people) and beat around the map looking for stragglers going to the jump puzzle or the zerg. See your side attacking/defending? find the run route to that objective and hang around. I get tons of good small fights that way. You can even do it solo if you are careful enough about it and get some great fights.
When you do more than mindlessly zerg melee is very useful.

I main a lvl 80 Warrior and i love it, im actually in melee range the majority of the time in everything from small skirmishes to huge zerg v zerg fights. You just need to recognize when to go in melee and when to range (rifle has a 1200 range btw so its not that bad)
Also i build a bit tanky with alot of condition removal so i dont mind taking a bit of dmg but you just need to know when to have an escape plan and know where your team is, if you think that your team is right behind you but your alone your gonna die. So as long as you know when to retreat and have a crew to watch your back you should be fine.
Melee builds in WvW currently rely on either a good skill set to get you in and out of the fight quickly, or sustain through either damage reduction / regeneration.
With neither of those things, success won’t be found as often in large fights where there’s an active “killzone” (where everyone dumps AoEs) unless you are carefully skirting the zerg, choosing your fights, rather than trying to Leroy them in the face.
Rifle has a range of 1200, with the Kill Shot (burst) having a range of 1500. Bow has a range of 1200 if you put 10 points into tactics, which also gives you a 1 second immobilize on any crippling move you use. Use the 1 sec immobilize, and switch to longer bow range in keep defense/sieging.
Sorry that you can’t sit back and kitten derp pew pew pew like legolas :<
2 Mesmer (sPvP only)
I play a warrior as my main in WvW and love it. Just keep an arrow cart in your inventory. Play melee while running around and toss down an arrow cart when your in a keep. It’s 6s and pays for it self in 1 defense round if you get a couple loot bags.
I’m rocking a heavy toughness/vit warrior and having a blast. I can deal solid damage and can take an incredible amount of punishment. To me rangers always seem like one of the weakest classes. Especially if they are caught out 1v1 or even 2v1.
“Let our swords stay sharp until the Jolly Roger flies over all our enemies keeps!”
Warriors are very powerful if played correctly. I main a warrior and all i do is WvW. Certain specs are for certain situations and most can be viable if played correctly. It all boils down to your play style and the supporting cast that you have playing with you.
I am usually the first one in a fight and the last one out. I run a healthy balance of Glass cannon and survivability to ensure that I cannot be ignored or insta gibbed. You just need to find the correct set up for your style of play. PM me if you want more details as I dont like sharing them to the mass
The weakest situation for us is usually keep defense but even then you can be calling targets for your groups focus fire and manning siege. You can also make some strategic fear bombs and use your passive trait to jump off of high surfaces to do some funny things
All and all warriors are very balanced and as a warrior the only class/spec that even remotely gives me trouble are certain speced mesmers and 1 spec of thief. Everything else pretty much melts.

Um, I’m pretty sure MOST classes have maximum range of 1200
The only class I know that can have its range extended to 1500 is the ranger through a trait. But just because you have two classes – ranger and warrior – and one has 1500 range while the other has 1200, doesn’t mean you can automatically assume every other class has 1500 range. I have no idea how you even came to that conclusion honestly…

If melee is useless in WvW why do so many people complain about thieves killing them in 4 seconds…….
Even in standoffs my thief can shodowstep into the enemy group, down my target and still USUALLY get away without dieing.
Here is another idea, if your melee built, dont stick around a stand off that is a ranged battle.
Melee warriors are good line breakers. With enough temporary invulnerability, you can help push the battle in the direction you want it to go (that one away from the enemy dead bodies).
Weapon switching is your friend, as to the warriors are useless in siege.. try a longbow its f1 is a nice huge aoe burn. As for guardians.. try scepter you get a nice aoe and 1200 range abilities. The key to melee in wvw is knowing when to melee, typicall attack at range when targets scatter or dont switch to melee. Or you can charge in head first but expect to die fast :P

As for this.. due to rendering issues using stealth means you are invisible for longer periods of time. Especially in big group vs groups, so you can get away fairly easy.
you need to watch some WvW warrior videos. go to the warrior forums and find some posts.. and guildwars2guru pvp forums have lots of those.
Warriors, Guardians and Thieves are absolutely the best zerg buster classes BECAUSE of melee.
Melee are many think, but under no circumstances useless in www.
You speak about keep def… well you can go to siege weapon, or if you think sw dps is weak .. you can make a beautiful trip on the postern ( not solo if possible ) to dps and kill some ppl in the ram ( with wall of reflection ofc. ). if fact you can make many think with melee. Just look some youtube movie or look forum like guru.

As others here have suggested – Melee is very viable in WvW. For the most part I’m primarily melee on my Warrior. I run with Sword/Board and Hammer most of the time but will switch out to Greatsword. At times during sieges if I cannot grab a siege weapon I step out of combat for a half second and switch the Hammer out to the Longbow until said siege is done.
Most of the time however I try to cut off reinforcements and skirmish. I utilize a Banner build and imo it’s extremely effective. I have non stop regeneration from adrenaline and the banners (which heal others too), and each banner also has a swiftness buff that lasts about as long as the cooldown and possibly longer with the correct gear so I nearly have perma swiftness when I’m traveling.
You have to remember to spec for survival if you want to play this way. Lots of Toughness / Vit and Regen along with weapons / utilities that have active defenses.
Hurc Hammerborn – Guardian
Legion of Legionnaires [LoL] – Darkhaven
I play a Warrior, full defense spec with sword n board, I hardly ever die in WvW and get plenty of kills. Sounds like a L2P issue to me.
And I have an ability that gives me 33% movement speed 75% of the time.
OP definitely needs to L2P before posting whine threads.

With the right build as a warrior or guardian you can jump into a zerg and hulk smash crap for a while and still get out safely if you do it properly. Melee warriors and guardians make great zerg pushers with their survival.
To say melee is useless, just means you’re bad. I’ve actually been running daggers on my necro and ele and do just as much if not more than the cowardly people sitting back trying to get as close as they can without getting hit all day.
I’m a warrior and I owned using my greatsword for melee, rifle for range. I can take 2-3 people at the same time.

@ aarius you realize it is THIEF that is the only class without a long range option (long range is 1200/+, Sub 1200 is considered close range) Just because your guardians long range options is suboptimal, at least you get one. You are also the best tank for sitting in front of a zerg that knows what to do (AKA make the guardians be the first to load on enemies screens and dont stalemate) or how about the reflects on gates…
The guardian has a lot more options with roles to perform in w3. As a thief, on any matchup where the servers you are fighting have even minimal brain power, you will see 99% of players running with the herd. All a thief can do is sneak around the enemy zerg, pop caltrops and dagger storm, otherwise he will have less effect then any other class

The title should actually read, “My Melee skills are useless in WvWvW”
Saying a ranger is better at WvW over a warrior is like saying a carpenter is better at building houses over a mason.
Your comparison is a clear indicator that you have not learned how to use melee (or a warrior) in WvW. Be patient, take some time to learn the warrior… or maybe it’s just not your style.
get a better commander to utilise your role better.
a good group of players mixed with range and melee can litteraly rofl stomp keeps and such as long as you move accordingly and learn when to sit back and wait your turn to beat the hell out of your opponent.
it’s all in how your group play they are perfectly fine.
issues would arrise if they became more powerfull however, if you give them more damage when they get in melee range they are op if you give them too much defence they become unstoppable in a good group and that causes balance issues.
in good groups now they seem fine, may need minor tweeks i don’t know, but they don’t do any more or less damage than ranged.
just one side of the debate though, i’m sure others will have a different view point, my post isn’t meant to cause outrage just a point of view.
Try harder,
warrior: pop invuln, rush into zerg, pop fury might etc, whirwind attack, see people die

My guild loves watching a well geared warrior/guardian melee on a tower/keep ramp or in a choke point. Just watch the zerg die around them, while they knockdown and keep the enemy off our squishy ranged that blow up the rest.
Love melee, but kitten kitten kitten kitten invisible enemy! When this kitten kitten kitten kitten will be fixed? How i intended to fight as melee with this kitten?
Lol try guardian if you are complaining about warrior. Warriors have it GOOD compared to guardians in terms of ranged options and viability.
But I’d have to argue against melee being useless. Learn how to move, learn how to gain strategic advantage based on location/ambushes and cover terrain. I got over 1500 kills in a week in WvW on my guardian (I’ve heard other classes get more, but still I think 1500 kills in a week isn’t anything to scoff at), I’d have to definitely say we aren’t useless.
You, Kimosabe… must learn the art of diving.
try leveling up and get talent skills instead of being level 5
There are no melee classes. Warrior does more damage with ranged abilities than necromancer does with any weapon at all. If “melee classes” are kitten, even though they can do more damage then I can, I want to become a melee class.
To the OP join a guild, get organized and watch your class become pure face melt.

There’s more to the necro than big numbers.
Correct, it’s about bugged skills. :p
Junkkis,
Melee is more situational than ranged. So yes, you are right, ranged weapons in WvW feel to be better, ranged can just spam skills. Melee is more like waiting for the right moment to act.
And so… Melee is kinda weaker, as you say.
I usually rack a ton of kills while defending with my longbow. Justlay down those aoe attacks and reap the rewards.
Sometimes when I feel more meleeish in defense I jump on the door bunch with Death From Above and run back in. Oh the laughs.
Melee is useful in WvWvW…if you know how to PvP with melee, you can win a 2v4 fight. Melee and range is situational…just like running an instance. Gotta be smart enough to know when to use it and what your strengths are for PvP. Cant just run into a keep fight and start attacking a gate with your sword while armor carts and oils are attacking you. I’m killing people melee with my elementalist using daggars…just learn your class and you’ll be fine
(edited by Nocturnal.9684)
Warriors are currently the fastest class in the game with the sword/greatsword weapon sets. Without using all my speed options i’m faster than the fastest possible theif (not to say the theif isnt fast, they are, and on top of that they are elusive, which has its own benifit).
And guardians are irreplaceable in keep defense. Staff auto attack can hit attackers from behind the gate at a safe range. But thats not all the guardian can do to turn the tide in a tower/keep. They have the most overpowered zerg stopping abilities in the game and my guild relies on them regularly for our defensive setups.

Engineers can get 1500 range for grenades with 30 points in the explosives trait line and a very limited number of Elementalist skills work at that range as well. Ele is not at all effective at 1500 thoughand as you probably know Engineer grenades aren’t player targeted and have a substantial travel time, so that extension is pretty much only useful in siege situations or zerg vs. zerg. Hitting anything moving is exceedingly difficult.
Stop running glass cannon builds in WvW zerg encounters.
