Mesmer Portals, one skill to rule them all
Now obviously you’ll have a ton of people in here spamming about how it isn’t OP, and how it isn’t broken.
The fact is everyone, he has a point actually. A skill like this should have SOME kind of limit. Whether it be people can only use it once every couple of seconds, or that only 5 can use it before it disappears, that it can be destroyable, or even that killing the mesmer destroys it.
Call it being butthurt if you want, but our server has also used mesmer portals to port armies and golems around quickly and hence this means using the rendering issue that goes along with it.

Hmm I can definitely see how this would be a problem. I’ve personally never used it in WvW strategy as I like using all my utility slots for (what I consider) more useful skills. Only time I’ve used my portals is in jump puzzles to help my friends/guildies.
I do feel that using it to portal over a ton of people would be rather op… partially why I would rather not use it in wvw as well. :S I think it’d be best for it to have limited number of uses, as you say. Five people or so. Course that could still mean multiple mesmers would use portals, I don’t know.

Its OP if you get attacked but it aint OP if you just happen to have a mesmer on your side with a decent skill set.

This is a WvW setting not a 10vs10 battleground.
Any mesmer can use this skillset, so ask you mesmers to use it to and quit whiney to nerf cool ability’s before this game turns the same way as WoW.

The portal simply doesnt belong to the game. Same can be said however about other skills. But specially with the invisibility problems, portals becomes a click to win skill.

Two of the best abilities in WvW by far. And both affect way more than 5 players depending on how skilled you are with them. I’ll take these over portal any day.

1. Rendering (disable mesmer teleport until is fixed since to many abuse this , and btw as far as i know this is not Startrek Online would love to know who was who came whit the idea)
2. Add some Diminishing Returns on CC currently the game is all about who can spam more CC’s
3. Servers are way to laggy no matter of what region
4. Random DC’s
5. Events still failing big time

This is exactly correct and this is the main issue. Even mass invisibilty has a rendering issue. Theifs have a rendering issue.
I’d rather see other classes get more useful utility skills than just see the skills that have utility get nerfed. At the moment there seems to be an aversion to GW1-style skills that are as powerful as the first half of the skill bar when used properly… so what we get now is button mashing.

I completely second this and I’ve been WvWing with a Guardian for a few weeks now. The ability to provide complete coverage from ranged attacks in an area is very powerful. However, target skills still get through and that’s the weakest part about the skill. You can run up and throw down WoR to punish ranged attackers, but they’ll just stop attacking once they realize it’s up and use target skills instead. It’s a very fun skill, but I wouldn’t compare it to a mass teleportation skill because they accomplish very different things in the game and there’s really no weakness to a teleport skill like there is to the WoR.
WoR is a gambit and teleporting doesn’t really have the same downside.

Mesmer is the worst class design I’ve seen so far. At the moment it’s all about portals. Do it or lose.

If you don’t like Mesmesrs than don’t play one! Screaming for NERFing, in my opinion, is basically saying, “I’m not good enough to play my avatar correctly, so I want everybody else to be NERFed”.
I have a question? Is everybody equal when it comes to fighting in the RL world? A better point, is everybody equal in the RL, in general? So why, should it be, all classes and races must be equal in a MMO?
MMOs were suppose to be a team effort. Meaning, people should’ve learned the strength’s and weakness’s of their avatar and find other players, with different avatars to offset their strength’s and weakness’s. Hence, a balance group or a balance guild. (This concept was general knowledge and appreciated back in the day)
However, now, with team orientated PvP and with the introduction of leaderboards, kill boards, etc, there is a group of people, who want their avatar to be the best at everything, and when it’s not, they will jump up and down, complain to no end, even start online petitions (WoW community) until either their class is buffed or others are nerfed.
We us to call them WoWbabies or Wamblers. NERFing usually destroys games, it rarely makes them better. Just take a look at UO, WoW, or the Bard class in Rift. It’s practically useless in PVP, now!

What is balance? How would limiting the amount of people “balance” it. Stop throwing buzz words around.

No. I’ve seen the side who used it lose the battle many, many times. Also learn how to counter a giant glowing purple circle on the ground. Are you kidding me? It tells you where they’re all going to come out from so you can spam all your aoe on it killing every single one of them before they can even move. Culling and rendering isn’t even an issue, in fact it works FOR you. I sometimes think mesmers on the other team are putting them down to troll their own team.
I know people hate being told to learn to play but sometimes they just really need to.
I would hate to see the mesmer portal surprise attacks disappear from the game altogether. However, I do think it is odd that most skills only affect 5 players, but the portal is an exception to the rule.
Apparently, 20 enemy players can jump through one portal, but if I throw a grenade at them, my grenade can hit only 5 of the enemy players. This seems an odd choice.
If a few mesmers need to work together to open a number of portals to launch the surprise attack, I’m fine with that. If one mesmer has to keep casting portals to move in 5 enemies at a time, I’m fine with that. That rewards clever teamplay, and adds some suspense and variety to sieges.
There are many situations and places where you can’t counter it. It works 8 out of 10 time.
If a mesmer jumps down a wall you’re dead before you can do anything. Mesmers can port themselves and stealth. You don’t see them coming. When you see the portal on the ground it’s already too late. If they’re smart, they will activate their defensive skills before they roflstomp you.
I bet I would kill your zerg too. Send 2 mesmers and do a fake portal if they’re expecting you. And no, it’s not brilliant, it’s a cheap tactic with an almost guarantee to win.
Put a 5 person limit on it like each other skill is restricted and it’s fine.

The Portal does fall outside of the usual power-spectrum to quite an extreme.

In my book, there is currently something wrong with Mesmers and Guardians in WvW. If you don’t have access to both professions the variety of tactics a raidleader can use is very limited. The Guardian is (almost) elementary if you want to block joke points and a few Mesmers allow you to either execute surprise attacks or even to build a “portal road” to get a army of golems across the whole map within seconds.

This has to be the most pathetic moan and whine I have read so far today! Like seriously your calling a skill OP cause of rendering issues I have seen people run back in a cave hide and run back out just for the rendering should we nerf all cave entrances maybe have a few avalanches block em all up heck while were at it lets make zerg sizes max of 5 more than 5 players together get randomly tele-ported to another location. As for the limiting it to only 5 thing not all AOE’s are limited to 5 grenade kit you expect it to be 5 its a grenade not to realistic to throw 50 is it!!! My guardians Whirling Wrath hits more than 5 at once so do many other aoe’s Barrage on Rangers maybe we should limit this to 5 people also it annoys me when i’m attacking a keep!!! Yet I don’t go screaming for a NERF I find a way to make myself better and to deal with these things. Lastly Mesmer portals show clearly on the ground they are even PINK!!! Hard to miss really plus the mesmer has to actually run close to you to even plant it on the ground so isn’t exactly safe for the mesmer so why can’t you figure out what they are going to do exactly? If you want a game with no challenge guild wars isn’t it so maybe you should be playing hello kitty island or something……
Seems to me the portal problem would be easy to fix, just limit either the number of players who can go through it total or the number of players who can go through it per second. It wouldn’t ruin the skill at all: you could still hide mesmers inside keeps and have them port friends in after it flips, or use portals to move golems or speed up supply runs.
The only thing you couldn’t do anymore is send 30 people through the portal all at once causing the rendering issue. And make no mistake, the rendering issue is the single biggest reason why portal bombs are so successful right now.
The skill is OP because a Mesmer is a walking waypoint. They can basically summon a 50+ army. There is no way Anet meant for this to work this way because it makes the Mesmer a higher priority profession in WvW. To me this is just an exploit tht ppl want to try and defend because they need an advantage to have fun.
If a single Mesmer gets such a powerful WvW skill then why dont all the other professions have anything that even comes close. Why can my Engineer repair siege equipment and walls or Rangers spot every enemy they see on the minimap. No other professions skills come close to matching how useful this exploit is.
-Simi- Basically the way you want to play is no challenge. Its a challange to hold a siege, protect equipment and take a Fort.
Its not a challenge to just get in and zerg mass teleport behind them.
I hope this gets labeled an exploit and I hope you get banned for doing it.

Elementalist has a multi-minute cooldown that can revive a maximum of three people at a shot, assuming you’re even in the right attunement for it? Nerfbat.
Mesmer has a skill that allows them to teleport an entire army past any and all defenses of a fortified location? Legit.
The reason why AoE attacks and heals are limited to 5 people maximum is to set a cap on how much DPS or HPS you can do.
Without this limit in large team situations it boils down to whoever has the best/most AoE spells win and if you have crappy AoE spells you are going to be pretty worthless.
With this limitation, while AoE is better it’s not overwhelmingly better then some of the single target options, and the contribution of builds and classes that tend to specialize in single target options better is actually somewhat comparable to the people that have decent AoE options instead of where you might not even bother showing up if your AoE sucks because everyone else is going to out DPS you by at least 30×.
Portal does no DPS or HPS on it’s own. It’s simply a utility spell, and while it’s a good utility spell it certainly isn’t completely in a league of its own. There are other very powerful utility spells as well.
Like mentioned before, there’s nothing wrong with portal itself, it’s the culling issue. The ideal fix would just be to fix the culling issue, but even if they cannot fix that there are better options then limiting it to 5 people.
Do note that there is a hard limit to the distance in which the portals work. If you go beyond this distance the portals won’t work. Therefore you should always be cautious about lone mesmers running towards you or large groups stacked in 1 spot. They should all be within your visible viewing range. If you’re more aware and observant it is not difficult to thwart these tactics.

I hope if it’s nerfed in PvP it won’t also be nerfed in PvE, because it has very few practical applications there, and it doesn’t even work properly.
It already doesn’t work if you use it on a ground area where there’s AOE ground effects, and the exit portal lasts for about half the duration the tooltip says it does. Also, you can’t use it instantly (as someone above says), when you use the portal and appear, there is a short waiting period before you can use it again. A person can usually only go back and forth maybe 3-4 times if they are quick.
NPCs standing on it, or people dead on top of it giving you the revive option on F, also prevents its use, because you can’t get to the F option you want.

The portal is only “overpowered” due to rendering issues with the game.
If people weren’t invisible due to the game, it would be fine.
The portal is a great tactical tool for offense and defense and removing it or ‘nerfing’ it seems rather silly and would just dumb down the game.
Remember to cry nerf for any skill you use to kill others with because that’s OP as well.

Go back to WoW and whine there for nerfs, i heared its World of Stuncraft or World of Botcraft at this moment.
Any server can use the Mesmers or Gaurdians skills, there is no need to nerf a class for this.

Fine and we currently play Mesmerwars 2 /Find the Mesmer /Be A Mesmer / Portal 3 /Mass Portaling.
Sure it will be nerfed soon. Anything else would be ridiculous.
Mesmer portals are not OP cause of culling or any other issue, they are OP cause the skill has unlimited uses and is not limited to a 5 player party scenario like just about everything else in this game is. If they just make the portal skill only usable by 5 people then that will bring it in line with everything else.
Hell if you want yer fancy tactics still you can just have 30 people 6 groups of 5 with each group having 1 Mesmer in it and then just have all the Mesmer’s lay down their portal entrance. Then the first one runs up like they do now places his portal exit and the 5 other Mesmer’s use that portal than place down all of their portal exits. Ta-da same ambush tactic just with a little more coordination!
I do not care about what it gets used for, what I care about is that it is able to effect an unlimited number of players where as other buffs and effects can only effect 5.

What skills are you talking about? I know that for thieves my area stealth skills only work on five people. I only play my guard in sPvP, but I’m pretty sure all of the boon skills also only work on five people. Combo blast finishers only affect five people (ie area stealth, area might) per hit. So, sure, give all of these unlimited targets and it sounds even. Nothing like a nice 23 second zerg stealth with cluster bomb and smokescreen to get people crying for a nerf on unlimited target spells.
portals are not limited to 5 people because a portal is not an AOE same reason why a group of 30 can walk through a meteor storm or a field 1-5 at at time and they will all be hit. Skills dont just stop after they hit 5 people just only 5 people can be hit at a time, im sure the portal follows the same rule you just dont notice because 5 people dont all hit F at the same millisecond.
The problem here isnt the portal skill of mesmers its the game engine and calling for a nerf wont help the problem, it would just hurt it more.
It’s fine. Fix rendering. Then you fix portals. Portals are not the only issue with rendering. So unless they plan to disable a lot of things, it’s fine. Just fix rendering.
As people have said before, the rendering issue is NOT a portal issue. Yes, portal tends to exacerbate it, but you shouldn’t lump it in with portal. Getting rid of portal will NOT solve the rendering issue.
That said, ignoring the rendering issue…portal is one of the skills that truly allows for a smaller, more organized team to effectively combat a mindless zerg. For example, a mesmer can sneak behing a zerg and open a portal to their siege line and bring in a bunch of folks for a raid. Or a mesmer can hide in a keep and then portal a smaller force inside before the zerg reacts. Or as mentioned here, a mesmer can port siege golems to accelerate moving them across the map.
The list goes on…all interesting tactical possibilities. All counter-able, and ALL of them require a lot of coordination.
So I’m sorry, but what exactly is wrong with this? You have to understand that if a group uses portal to beat you, it is not portal that beat you, but a coordinated group with a sound strategy.
Trust me when I say that it is very difficult to get random people to do what you want them to do with a portal…it really requires coordination, and that is a GOOD thing.

Getting 10 Mesmers would be at least a bit challenging. Currently it’s just EZmode. So, worthless argument and of course it gets nerfed.
