Lance Delgado Lvl 20 Thief
(edited by Grimno.6172)
So today in WvW in the “Darkhaven” “Sorrow’s Furnace” “Isle of Janthir” battlegroup we were attempting to seige SF’s keep in EB since they have few members on at the time.
We built Trebs at the Vista north of SM and after some trebbing, a mortar took them out.
People kept asking where they were coming from so I peered off and watched for streaks in the sky, and eventually saw it was the Mortar… on the Keep’s Inner Wall.
And everything we built on the vista got destroyed by this same mortar.
This was baffling to me, since I knew the treb on the vista (not a big height difference between the two) couldn’t even hit their mortar. The farthest being the large tower or the statue.
Everything we built, boom.. gone.
Even one we built at the far back of the Vista top… still got hit. Heck i’m pretty sure one round missed the treb and hit Anz at one point!
Then an ally built a treb at a very bad spot, but then I noticed an enemy using the mortar on the outer wall to try and hit it.. but it kept falling short.
This blew my mind BIG time.
Essentially this is what I was looking at.

How is it… the Keep’s Inner Wall Mortar on the SouthWest Side was able to hit all that… while the other couldn’t? I understand there are skills to increase range, but by that much?!
I’d expect the vista to be able to get smashed by the outer wall mortars, but inner wall?!
Kinda feel like there’s toooo much of a difference gap between those two.

Because Overlook is overpowered. It has height advantage and it is the only keep that can treb SM. The south mortar has huge advantage on height.
It’s called trajectory. A mortar is a high trajectory, low velocity round. The one on the inner wall has the height of placement and angle of elevation to reach the vista.
Edit: Really? When you encounter something you don’t like, it’s overpowered? That’s all you have for depth of thought and game play?

I know their trebs can hit the noth wall of SM, but even those have to be located on the outter wall and even then it’s only through splash damage most of the time.
Just feels weird to see a Mortar, with that much range. Even with the height advantage it’s essentially got 50% more range then a normal mortar’s firing range on level ground.

Actually i meant unbalanced compared to the other keeps.

Unbalanced? OK, I’ll buy that for a buck. It is the northern keep, third place in the match-up so maybe they should have a little defensive advantage. I’m sure if one does a proper recon, one can find a defilade firing position.
Edit: Hmmm, this is starting to sound too military for a fantasy mmo. Sorry about that. Old habits I guess.

given that mortar B can hit much longer then what you show in your photo and the fact that mortar A is higher up then you also and the diffrencs in the range from the treb you can build to there mortar A is not very much and only given by the high advantage
mortar B can hit somewhere around anza if ou want it to;)
and SM can also hit overlook if you want to
Unfortunately your picture is wrong, I’ve defended overlook many times, including just now using the mortar – successfully – and mortar B can hit much further.
Also no skills to increase treb/mortar range.

Yeah, Look mate. I was one of the commanders on at the time. The mortar can reach to about the middle of the vista; it is to do with the high trajectory of the mortar, essentially it shoots up at a massive angle as opposed to a trebs very shallow arc, but no one was using it at that time.. We wiped out your trebs in person. I was there.. Then you started building Trebs just south of the sentry near ogre. We wiped that melee first.. Then you tried to speed cata the wall.. We set up arrow carts, wiped that.. Then you tried putting 3 trebs up on the same rock near the ogre sentry, I personally, set up a treb and killed all 3 myself. Then you were trying to cata from the ramp that leads you up to the Vista north of anz. 1, it’s lower ground, at which point i did use a mortar to ruin your assault.
They were good attacks. Your server made some good plays, I enjoyed defending against such great numbers, as I always do. Thank you for the challenge. Unfortunately, you were outplayed by a miniscule amount of players, however please don’t feel discouraged. It was a great assualt. I look forward to more.
Good job to everyone that assisted me, a special thanks to our other Commander, Dreadmode.
Mortar B is able to hit the vista and beyond though.
