Most Useful/Effective Class
Depends entirely on what you want to do.
Depends on your preferred playstyle.
The most useful profession is one that you can wield effectively.
without a doubt what goldenwing said. Although the wast majority will, mostly due to ignorance, present rangers as the most useless no matter what you want to do.

If I wanted to be a high dps class without being too squishy, which would that be? It’s either that or I’ll find a build for my staff ele to play wvw as a multi role person, depending on my attunement
Assuming you are talking about organized guild WvW raids, since there are twice as many Guardians as any other classes in WvW, I would have to say Anet has deemed Guardians the most useful class. But outside of that, you will find a heavy population of Warriors that get close to the number of Guardians out there, as Warriors & Guardians form the “frontline”.
Besides Guardians & Warriors, Eles are also very much needed for their utilities, cc, & water fields. Necros at the moment still have a place due to plague, boon stripping, and spike damage when traited properly. Mesmers are nice to have a couple around in a raid, mainly used as a veil/portal bot, or in combat they generally cast null fields, feedback, and timewarp.
After these classes you start to feel bad, because rangers, thieves, and engineers are very much outcasts in organized guild WvW raids. There will be some around, but often they’re asked to play another class instead, usually one of the classes mentioned above. Thieves often get the scouting duty, if that’s your thing, then you’ll fit in. Rangers, while having good single target dps, get lost in large WvW raids due to lack of utilities. So they often get the stomp duty if they are even allowed to play one in their guild raid.
If you’re just talking about pugging, then honestly it doesn’t matter, play whatever you want to play. Certain classes & builds are more powerful in small groups or solo roaming.
Ask the driver or the guild your are running with as to what they need at the moment.
Personally however I prefer a Mesmer as imho their skills are tailor fit to support large numbers. Feedback effects can mitigate ranged damage and has no cap. Glamours effects (stealth, cleanse, debuff, confusion, etc.) in general affect any who are in, go in or go out of the field and also has no cap.
Mesmers also have access to nice situational skills such as pulls and knock backs vs. defenders and cliff fights, Portals for Golem rushes and sneaking people past gates, Time Warp (nuff said), and depending on the update possibly better access to shutting down opponents with chains of interrupts.
The biggest drawback however is that you probably wont be able to tag that many opponents unless you take a few steps away from being a full support Mesmer, and with confusion still being in the crapper you might have to resort to AoE illusions and high direct damage just to get a few bags.
Moar guardians less thieves

hahaa meant that for group play :p
Lets define the scenarios:
Roaming: Thief, Mesmer, Warrior
Skirmishing: Everything except Ranger
Open Field Fights: Guardian, Warrior, Necro, Ele
Siege Attacking: Ele, Mesmer
Siege Defending: Ele
So if all around usefulness in most scenarios is the goal, Ele wins simply because staff eles are great wall warriors and when played well are excellent in open field fights. In skirmishing, they have to retool for D/D but still solid.
If we are talking solely combat operations, Warrior. It is about the only class that excels in all forms of combat play without having to retool for each style. Although it does get better when it adjusts its build between skirmish and large group open field.

“GWEN”
These are the most useful classes in the game
Guardian- best stability and frontline control class
Warrior- best CC and dps frontline class
Ele- best backline/peripheral support class
Necro – best backline DPS class
Outside of GWEN
Mesmer- used for masking raid movements, otherwise useless
Thief – best class for peripheral control, usually does not follow raid call except to blast water fields on recovery
Engineer- can almost cover the role of elementalist and necro. Lacks the survivability of an ele though.
Ranger – pretty much useless to a raid. Lol one water field, that’s it. YES Rangers I’ve looked. I’ve tried everything I can to find something useful for a ranger to do in a zerg and there just isn’t. No stability for frontline, no AOEs for backline dps. Ranger could potentially fill the role a thief does.
There you have it. Most useful effective classes are in GWEN. The rest either have niche roles or are useless.
