Most useless class in WvW?
I’m thinking most will say Ranger, of course this question depends on what kind of Game Play. Ranger is not bad at roaming but thats pretty much it when compared to other classes for larger scale WvW.
Warrior by far is the most useless class in almost any scenario.
Ranger is inherently at a disadvantage due to the class dependency on it’s pets. Pets are not strong enough or smart enough in most wvw situations and as soon as it dies the ranger can lose a lot of functionality from traits.
Things like passive condi clear like empathetic bond, cc prevention from shared anguish and many other traits are rendered useless as soon as the pet dies with takes all of 5 seconds in aoe heavy wvw.
Obviously rangers are playable but it’s just something they have to combat before they even fire an arrow, throw an axe, or swing a blade at their enemies.

Whatever class I am playing on at the time is clearly the worst in wvw:-)
Rangers have a waterfield, thief has a pretty nice blast finisher with SB, together they form the marriage of “meh” in WvW. (assuming we aren’t talking about roaming)

Before you flamed me, let’s be honest you only need as much as 3 Mesmer for the zerg of 60 people, Mesmer Clones die too fast = no damage, GS damage is crap, Staff is bad, only Sword is good but it is a melee weapon and obviously a cloth class will get kitten in a melee train
They are good for creating chaos in a small group, but not zerg

In large-scale zerg fights, probably Ranger.
That said, Entangle is pretty devastating against backline-type characters such as Necros and Eles.
Rangers in large-scale fights should always bring Healing Spring, Entangle, and Muddy Terrain. Soft-CC is the best thing they bring, if they so insist on zerging.
Mesmer feels the most useless the most often out of the classes I’ve WvW’d with (ele/mesmer/necro/engineer, mostly). Portal/TW are powerful, but pretty dull in practice, and when we’re NOT in the process of golemrushing a keep, it’s a lot of flailing and feeling like I’m not doing much.
Second place is probably my engineer, because I don’t really like grenades, so I play a ~snowflake~ build, and thus suck in general. :P

Stop saying ranger lol, just learn to trait and play the class properly, so many rangers using longbow and shortbow range weapons just cause his class has the word “range” in it.
But I’m gonna have to go with: All classes, Due to every class having a strong point somewhere in WvW and a weak point… Too many factors to base off with small group work, zerging, solo roaming or just yak slapping.
….. And Elementalist.

IMO, your experience, build and the role you choose to fill, will determine your usefulness. Even a Mesmer can siege up a keep.

Voting Mesmer…yes being the portal/veil bot has its uses but outside of that, ehh. On the 2 servers have played on have seen multiple times where a call has been made by commander of zerg for Veil/portal only to realize not a single mesmer in entire zerg. Usually later it’s followed by “I can get on my mesmer if you really need one.”
Think this is more due to their inabilty to tag, as it really sucks when you smash thru a zerg and hear all the Guard/Warriors scream OMG look at all the bags…and you the mesmer pick up your 1.
Every class build has a job to do. Fulfill it and you’ve done your part. If that role is not needed look for a compromise. There’s a reason why skill slots are called utility slots…

u kidding right? thats not fun at all. i mean who wants to be a veil/portalbot? we lack aoe and are too squishy to use our duelist skills in combat. u only need 3 mes for veil and portal, thats it. after veil and portal is placed u got nothing to contribute, but anet seems to fail to see that issue. they see the spvp mesmer that des well in small encounter but doesent see that all the clones and phantasm and all that doesnet work in wvw zerg fights.

That being said my damage output in a zerg is absolutely sick. Usually I’ll just pick whomever enemy I first see, drop them, pick the next, drop them…
But if someone runs up and hits me? I just die, immediately. And the pets are near useless.
Every class can be good and useful in the right player’s hands.

Op, this also answer question to, which is the quickest class to get killed in wvw.
Ranger hands down no contest. A ranger tried to run away today from the zerg after we capped a tower. The commander goes chase that ranger down and teach him not to play ranger in wvw lol.
What amazing utility can a class bring to make them useful? The ranger class had its one really nice ability, waterfield nerfed, oh and its really cool 10 stack invulnerability nerfed. Suppose, if lag allows a pet that runs around and rez folks it might be as nice as a Warrior Banner, but then again, maybe not. Rangers certainly can’t out DPS classes.
So poor utility and meh dps… You tell me. Yes Mesmers have a couple of needed utilities. Same with Ele, so we can’t really count those. Theif has its place with DPS single target. Warriors a place. Engineers a place. Guardian’s a place.

thief’s aren’t terrible, spammable cluster bombs that hit for 3-5k ,and spammable poison fields on the downed so they can’t get ressed the normal method.
They’ve also got venom-share for utility.
I disagree that there are useless classes in WvW. Rangers and thieves are often targeted.
Ranger waterfield and entangle were used by my commander. With him I realized that every class was valuable, it’s really how each class can be utilized to maximum advantage.
One of the best scouts (Kasumi) in WvW is a thief and he’s pretty much unkillable. To a commander, a great scout is worth 30 soldiers.
It’s not only about group utility. It’s map utility. Every class can function in WvW when properly used.

Not sure what you guys are doing wrong with your mesmers but mine rocks with an attack of well over 3K. I really have to invest in some larger bags as I continually have to empty them. GS 2 & 4 will tag multiple targets. I can solo camps with him with ease. In fact I have more success with my mesmer then I have with my Guardian and both are 100+ in ranks.
Mesmer is certainly not the most useless profession. If that was the case why is there a phrase of “mesmer sweep”? Because they have insanely good gimmicks that can have a zerg bypass a keeps entire defense.
I would say rangers, eles, then thieves.
Ranger’s are just mediocre at both roaming and zerging, though not completely horrible for either if you build entirely for it. Staff eles are great in zergs, but any other build for roaming/zerging needs to be babysat by teammates to work. Thieves bring nothing to zergs, but can survive really well by themselves. However, is a thief by itself any good when in wvw it’s 80% guards/warriors that can’t be effectively taken down by a single thief?

Depends what scenarios you’re talking about. I mean Mesmer excels roaming but may be lower on the zerg totem pole. Rangers are pretty solid roaming (ignore bowbears) but not as useful as other professions in zergballs. Similarly for thief I guess. All of the above have a place in small groups.

I actually find the pet quite useful when soloing a camp, especially if it’s upgrade or has NPC mercenaries in it, too. Send the pet in to attack first and draw the enemy into a nice ball and then AoE them with Barrage, Piercing Arrows, and the Mistfire Wolf. But against other players, you need serious pet management to keep them from dying quickly.
Ranger. prof system not working in big or medium scales, no blast finisher (just on horn but no good main hand), no real cc (vines are destroyed instantly by aoe), other classes have bigger dmg without power as we have with a full power build, no support etc

Stop saying ranger. A good ranger brings much more than some other classes to a zerg.
You have a water field that cleanses conditions and brings regen, fire field (torch) that does a lot of dmg and traps you can even put on walls.
I do a lot of condition damage with my trap/condition build and i mostly use the pets for effects (fear, chill, etc.). You have to think your build specifically for wvw, not use some kind of berserk crit LB build.
I’m using Axe/Torch with a switch to LB (useful for players on walls, destroying ACs, etc.) and doing fine imo. Traps with targetting/bigger range, entangle. They all do big damage when spec’d for condition damage. The thing really missing to rangers is anti-CC (stability mainly) but other than that, it’s pretty solid.
Sure it’s not the best class, but when played correctly, you’ll do just fine with a ranger.
Imo the thieves are harder to play efficiently in a zerg (i also play one but mostly for roaming and stealth kills)… however, as stated in an earlier post, WvW isn’t only zerg fights. Thieves do make great scouts. They are also good at protecting camps, sentries from roamers and defending a position / updating siege, etc. Sure it won’t give as much Wxp but it’s important as well.

A player that has the ability to predict where an attack will be next, siege up that tower/keep, runs dollies to upgrade it and inform people on enemies movement, he or she can be a level 1 whateverclass running naked without any weapons equipped and be tons more useful than mister hero in ascended gear, running around clueless trying to find other players to solo to demonstrate his “epicness”.
WvW is about teamwork, playing smart and outmanouvering the opponents.
Not about what class you’re using.

Rangers not necessarily good at one on one from my experience (maybe it’s just me); however we rangers can be very effective in a group, using ranged skills with the long bow which can cause a fair amount of damage to a few players. Like any class you need to work out how to approach battles so you have an advantage over the enemy.
As for thieves, man they are annoying lol. Got to be the best class for roaming and picking people off. had a group of around four roaming between our keep & stonemist last week picking endless people off.
None are “useless” All have there spot in WvW and those how say Eles are useless WTH kinda build you playing there are most helpfull classes heals there stuns there knockbacks theire heal can normally clear what 5+ condison a group when an engis can clear 3 maybe

I’ve played every class to 80 at least once. The ones I have fun on in WvW or at least use in WvW a lot: Guardian (survival), Mesmer (zerker), Elementalist (cleric), Necromancer (condition/fear).
Ones I’ve tried but just felt really clunky on: Thief, Engineer.
Ones I’m indifferent about and will play when I’m in the mood: Warrior, Ranger.
I am slowly but surely hammering out the builds I enjoy on each, just a matter of settling on a setup and getting the gear arranged. Got the Guardian and Warrior where I like them I think, working on the Thief in an attempt to like the class. Don’t let other people tell you how to play it. Figure out the build that you personally enjoy. That’s my advice anyway.

you wrote a lot of funny thing. ranger have a lot of stability and will get more. rao, signet give you 30 sec stability untrained and more when spent point on trait.
healing spring isnt realy good because thats a healing skill. sometimes we cant wait to use it, and if the ball move away no more heal for us.
axe isnt good because the projectile not follow the ground line. we dont have any good main hand for big fights. our offs are not bad but mains are kitten.
engi granades, necro wells and marks, ele aoes are muchmuch better as our traps.

The Mesmer is far from the most “useless” class. Least DPS in a zerg? Perhaps. But they’re hands-down the best utility profession in the game.
so u think playing veilbot and portal service is fun?no its not its absolutely boring. so yeah a mesmer can hide and portal in. big deal, but the fun is actually in zerg fights and defending and siegeing and there we lack a lot. i wanna fight too, not just veil the warriors so they can go to get their lootbags.
