New Game Director is Our Best Hope
+1
I think I see a pattern in what you wrote, so I am gonna elaborate on that
I have played the game since the start and I think that the more melee fights the better… its faster, more active and more fun for me (i.e. frontline war, or D/D ele)… I have also played ranged in wvw (necromancer) but I stopped the moment pirateship came about… its no fun pew pewing each other from 1000-1500 range, the only time when playing ranged was fun for me when there were a lot of melee players bashing the hell out of each other and me running around them, trying to tag ’em all and not die
TLDR: balance should start in the melee vs. range dilemma, as right now range is superior;
melee should be given a buff or ranged should be nerfed… players who enjoyed pirateship had their time, now its time for melees to have some fun
PS: I have friends who left gw2 and are playing BDO and the thing they are saying all day long is that they love BDO’s rapid character movement during the fight…
so.. pls more movement less pew pew

I hate to break it to you but a new director, new dev team etc will not do anything at all!
Even if they assign a new WvW team, just like for the last 4 years, that team will actually be assigned to Living World and DLC2. Any work on WvW will be whenever they have free time.
The real problem is Mike O’Brien, who infamously called all WvW players PvE players.
He and other management are solely focused on PvE and the continuous flogging of a dead horse they call esports; that they refuse to assign any resources to WvW!
I used to be a PvE player like you, then I played Guild Wars 2
I read online the other day that the DotA 2 team at points only had around 20 devs working on the game, they were all just incredibly in touch with the game and great at what they did. One person who really knew balance well could also fix a ton of the balance issues also. I think it comes down to competence.
I think given a competent enough team, even if its under resourced they could still do a lot of good work to get a lot more builds a fighting chance.
C.O.M.M.U.N.I.C.A.T.I.O.N!!!!!!!!! Until they establish that, ALL ALL IS IN VAIN…and I’m not talking about random rehash of the same subjects on some other platform.

As for the big wvw update being scrapped for “small incremental improvements.” I am obviously worried that this might just prove in a sense that the big update never existed in the first place.
I am convinced that is the case, unless their devs are the slowest programmers around there is no way they worked over a year on it and have nothing to show for it beside the bare minimum of what the community asked for.
The chances of it existing are very slim!
First of all they claim to have been working on it for over a year.
Second, when Devon left, he wrote, on reddit as usual; that before he finished at Anet he had not worked on WvW since March!
These are 2 very conflicting pieces of information!
Anet saying they have been working on it, when the WvW lead says he hasnt done a thing!
Then they claim they cannot release it yet, even though they have been supposedly working on it for a year, and will not be released later in 2016.
I used to be a PvE player like you, then I played Guild Wars 2
Well, based on A.Net’s past behavior and patches, which is a good predictor of future patches, I expect MORE PvE in WvW and that part of the game will collapse.
I do not see a good future. The WvW players have given their opinions and with out any communication, from A.Net, expect nothing to change or get worse.
Sorry to be a ‘Negative Nancy’ on this but that is the way have done things.
The most played class before HoT was warrior, and its at the point where I think weapons like hammer could be buffed 100% and still be not viable. So they took the most played class and made it more or less unviable in big fights.
Then there is what most people consider the most fun class, thief. Thief is also pretty close to unviable in wvw with all the random aoe skills that can legit 1-hit kill a thief. D/D ele which is another build that a lot of people think is super fun is also not very viable. So basically all the “fun” builds and the most played builds are super bad at fighting.
No, wrong, and wrong.
The real problem is Mike O’Brien, who infamously called all WvW players PvE players.
Yeah, that’s a biggy. I can only hope that he meant something other than he said.
I play PVE and I play WvW. It doesn’t mean I want duels in pve or PVE events in WvW.

Warrior in PvE yes, not in WvW. The most played were either Necro or Ele followed by Thief. Only when there was a buff to PI and condi’s, did mesmers become the cancer of WvW. Now you see people who never played a Mesmer in their life, play this one trick pony.

Nope, that’s pretty much exactly what he meant. If you watch the whole clip and see more of the context, he thinks that WvWers do all aspects of the game. He’s hoping to win more people over to PvE by it’s awesomeness. I personally feel this is why they moved reset to Saturday and never moved it back to Friday: to force people into PvE. Reanna immediately responds with how she only logs in to WvW as well as others, and he seems stumped. It’s funny, because if you watch the other guy in the clip, I forget his name off the top of my head, he looks mortified and buts in to try to backtrack.

While, yes, he can make the game great or even worse.. the worst possible thing we could do this time is " wait and see". No, this time everyone needs to make sure he hears what we want loud and clear and very specific. You can’t say things like " rewards" and expect them to have the same idea of what that means as you do, you have to define it very precisely and clearly to make sure there can be no misunderstanding or you can be guaranteed there will be…. and it WILL be bad. Right now, he has the chance to make this the best Large scale PvP game on the market if he sends out surveys ( letting them write in exactly what they mean and be specific!) to past and present WvW only players and use that data to make the decisions for the game mode. If they actually listen to WvW players this time they could make a masterpiece! Or of course they could continue on track and implement HoT and EoTm garbage, downsize the game mode and kill it faster as well.. People have to speak up to prevent that from happening though.
WvW / PVP ONLY

Chaba always puts it best. I for one have no faith in them, too many roamers, guilds, pvers, etc have left the game. Think about it what’s currently going on “wvw beta is coming soon!”. Beta……..3 years out, beta?
I’m sorry but I build systems for a living. After 3 years of running a system I typically say “added upgrade or improvement”, not blow the thing up and destroy it, then claim I’ve been working on it for a whole year and have unhappy customers to the point they give up on ya. Just pathetic LOL
They just need to revert everything to how it was at launch. I had the most fun in WvW with the original systems (minus the orbs).
Then they need to improve the rewards and let WvW-ers earn ‘all the things’ we have to PvE for… in WvW.
That is what they should spend time on now. Not an entire revamp. WvW didn’t need a revamp, it only needed a little tune-up.
Well, based on A.Net’s past behavior and patches, which is a good predictor of future patches, I expect MORE PvE in WvW and that part of the game will collapse.

I don’t think you are being a negative Nancy at all, I think you are being a realistic individual if anything.
WvW friends are moving onto black desert and speaking pretty highly of it so far, I think I’m going to join them soon here.
People see developers leaving always as something bad, and they feel iffy with new developers joining.
Diablo 3 was horrible, until they got a new set of developers, and it turned out much greater.
We can only hope.
Fyi this is the new game Director for now Mike O’Brien and he has a positive outlook on wvw…….

Ths sad truth is that because this game is B2P and most of WvWer’s do not spend money at cash shop, GW2 is geared towards new PvE players.
If you bought the game and do not spend at cash shop you are old news.
So PvE will always be the main drive.
ANet knows that if WvW disappears, 90% of PvE players wont even notice it.

Speak for yourself, I see far more cash shop items per capita in WvW. Finishers and transfers aren’t even used by the PvE crowd.

u know, i was just thinking, I can’t remember any mmo that i’ve left and wanted to go back to. usually when I leave, it’s for a reason I don’t easily forget. Except UO, not sure why i left, but somehow as much as I even liked the game, I never looked back. dunno how anyone else feels about it, but it makes me wonder that no matter what happens, many are not coming back and probably started new lives / new progressions elsewhere. It’s like moving away from your old neighborhood….once you move, that’s pretty much “old” stomping grounds.
oh wait, now i remember why i left uo, my wizards tower vanished when i couldn’t log on for a while and i just stopped playing completely. I left blizzard after they deleted my maxxed amazon and assassin. I was so upset at them, that wow couldn’t wow me if they sent me a million dollars. this was when they made that rule that if you didn’t log on for x amount of time your account got deleted. They were the icing on the cake in a harsh situation I was going through at that time. I remember being happy Mike O’brien left them and it was no doubt a big reason I latched on to gw.. I remember Mike being involved in some of my fav games, after my original stomping grounds closed down. – i remember him being accredited in the birth of esports actually- when it started with warcraft 1 – i really had high hopes being that i came from one of the first mmos that started pvp competitively – i thought pvp was just over, then came warcraft ( before world of warcraft turned it into bugs bunny lol )
not revealing name of first game, but i will say, it was so huuuuuge, that like 3 companies tried to recreate it and failed miserably, they understood the coding and rules but failed at understanding the spirit of the game they were trying to imitate. GW1 was the closest to getting it right at the time.
if anyone can make wvw work, Mike is without a doubt your man, BUT / PROVIDING, he goes back to his roots….before marketplaces and metrics. That factor has obviously made things……..different. I was there when things were amazing…no one can tell me different.

Hmm. I am not sure who you have been playing with, but I don’t know a WvW player that hasn’t spent quite a bit at the cash shop. Most WvW players spend quite a bit Monthly and have it part of their " entertainment budget" for the month.
Anet knows if they lose these players injecting cash into the game every month, they either have to replace them or make cutbacks I am sure.
WvW / PVP ONLY
with all i said, I’ll share this one with the anet developers….
This text only based game is the child of a first generation game earth 2025 ,
“Earth: 2025 was one of the first Massively Multiplayer Online Browser Games (MMOBG’s) on the web. Built by Mehul Patel in 1996, it was closed down in December of 2009. Earth Empires is a project built by ex-Earth:2025 players to continue its legacy. Most players and alliances from Earth: 2025 migrated to Earth Empires when it opened less than a week after Earth: 2025 was officially closed. "
The original game was HUUUGE with 1st generation pvprs….apparently big enough to have kids, a functioning ladder, active forums and alliances today .
If you can understand what makes this game so intense, you understand what we want in wvw with graphics! – no…not the same mechanics or idea, nothing, just the ‘spirit’ that game creates ( created ? back then ) is immense – the game would continue when you logged off, and you can go from being a huge empire, to a parking lot while you sleep! lol ( a lot like wvw i suppose, since you can log into having no land at all heh )
this is one game i’m tempted to play again, except, I’m afraid of how much it might have changed over the years, and the fact that it can make you lose a lot of sleep lol. nothing but love for the original game, and I think i had to stop playing because my career was taking over.
maybe the anet developers should start a quick team and see how far they get up the ladder!! O.o
Post a score after you play to let us know if yall are really pvprs. :p
for extra credit – sign up as anet and rank #1 in the clan division!
and be warned, no shinies in there! and you can be sure that if you sign up as anet, some of the gw players will follow to make sure you don’t get to number 1, let alone the 1st gen pvp vets still in that game after we tell them what happened to wvw ^.^ so……the struggle is real in this scenario! Pvers will not like this at all, hard core strategists only
(edited by Ricky.4706)
I have 4 things I really hold against anet:
1) Ignoring wvw for 2+ years
2) Leaving the former trait aquiring system in place for over a year
3) Not balancing the game after the trait merge in June (still hasn’t happened).
ETA: Actually the trait merge alone was another splendid idea like the trait aquiring sytem: It will never work out – unless they want to cater to the PvE crowd – for them a faceroll game is nice.
4) That I knew I’d only have the time until HoT was released left to play my thief (D/D power) when they announced that there would be HoT. In short: Not caring for thief for 2+ years.
So in the end what I don’t like about this game is that it’s being neglected – I actually have no idea what they’re doing anyway, maybe maintaining a game as it is takes 210 devs.
I have no hope that things will change, sorry.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Stephen and the other tech guy seem like they were added to the team recently to help figure out what is going on? The only other guy on the wvw team is Tyler, who is a guy that doesn’t play wvw and seems genuinely confused in the Ready Ups.
Who? What’s a Ready Up?
As for the big wvw update being scrapped for “small incremental improvements.”
Why am I learning this from my opponent in a forum post, ANET?
if i had to bring anything from that game earthempires to wvw, it would be the ladders. Those ladders kept that game alive and intense for 20 years….the game itself would be meaningless without it, and the ladder would be meaningless without a competitive spirit – the game creates a competitive spirit. wvw creates a competitive spirit, but has no ladders to make it meaningful. a population score is not meaningful unless you are in the biggest server. the "There can only be 1 " prize. Just like there can only be 1 #1 on the ladder – but the same can be said for all 100 slots. With so many ladders that give meaning to being the best guild, or the best fighter, or the best free-for-all player – there can only be 1 alot lol
thus end game is simply being number 1 in your preferred game mode. That’s why, in this paradigm of game flow, guildwars 2 has no meaningful endgame in any mode except maybe spvp.
ie – my guild beat x, – big deal so did everyone else – my guild beat x 50 times in under 3 minutes -shows ladder results – – wow!! – that moment of “wow” is what a pvpr considers shiny.

Well, based on my own little experience at my work our director got fired around 2 years ago and the search for a new one was pretty difficult. The last 2 years have been tough to watch personally and what I worry about with anet is that the place will dissolve with no leadership thus the game state sinks even more. Your work place becomes more negative, supervisors/minions get more dumped on them and they start working out of class, and chances are that Mike O Brien dude is doing 50 jobs at once now. That leads to unfinished projects, lack of communication, and stressing out the entire company because decision making gets put on hold because lets face it, lots of supervisors can never make one
What I do hope is that they move fast on getting a new director at the helm so the mentioned doesn’t happen because I can tell you it is quite miserable to watch.
