Tarnished Coast
New Player here who wants to WvW
Tarnished Coast
As far as server goes it sounds like you’d be happy with a tier 2 server (kaineng, tarnished coast, or fort aspenwood). Out of those two classes Guardian is more useful than a ranger, can’t really help you with specs though.
Necromancer
Fort Aspenwood
I suggest looking a good guild that focuses on WvW but does the other aspects of GW2 as well because WvW burns you out if you do it 24/7 for weeks straight.
Guardians are fun in WvW. I do suggest you level 1-30 in PvE to get use to the class and get all the utility skills unlocked. Until you are 80 and geared 1v1 you will lose in WvW will often die if you try to roam solo. This spec is intended for group play.

Server selection:
I suggest going for servers below T2. Tiers are listed on this site : http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA.
I am biased towards SoS. Check us out at emerald-fang.com if you feel it’s the right fit. Our event calendar is here: www.emerald-fang.com/events

If you are WvW’ing….I’d suggest a Guardian over Ranger. However, note that Guardian’s ranged attacks are pretty bad so if you like to attack from ranged, you probably won’t be happy. Guardian is good at providing lots of support, taking damage, and dishing out some hearty melee damage. If you are more of a ranged guy (outside of Ranger), I’d recommend Warrior because they are just so good at so many things if you get a little bored of ranged attacks.
Ele and Mesmer are really fun too. Both those classes allow you to fight at ranged or melee. Necro is great if you like tanking tons of damage and dealing out your conditions. All three of these classes are also great for WvW.
Last words – “I’m going to jump off this cliff
and pull all those guys down cuz they’ll die.”
Middle or lower tier servers (T3-T8) probably have lower queue times than the top tiers, though I couldn’t verify that personally.
As far as community goes, guild choice is probably much more important than server choice. Every server will have its supportive & cohesive guilds, and its guilds that don’t share those qualities. Pick a server, then get out in WvW for a while and get familiar with the active guilds, follow their commanders around, and see which ones have the characteristics you’re looking for.
Depending on time zone, all tiers ( with the exception of 8 ) are healthy during NA time frames. Now if you want rediculous zerg fests that never stop with little to no option of running with anything but a zerg then look at the higher tiers, if your looking for all aspects from group play to zerg warfare, the lower tiers will be better suited for you.
As far as how to spec, Guardians have many many different specs that are viable, Rangers … not so much, both are fun but it seems currently Rangers have 1 or 2 specs that work and the rest are garbage.

Currently Guardian is stronger than Ranger. So you should pick that.
Any of the top 6 servers are pretty active in wvw. But if you don’t want too much queue come to tier 2 (rank 4 to rank 6). Consider joining us in Kaineng. ^^

If your looking for decent queues but good community I’d say probably tier 3 and 4 possibly tier 5…though we would love if you came to NSP…we have queues on Friday lol and for class really whatever you order if you like running or small group ranger is probably better while bigger groups or being a tank or great support I’d pick a guardian

And you say this because you’ve played extensively on both Tier 7 and Tier 8 and verified that there’s really no WvW activity there? Uh-huh, right. I play Tier 8, and despite the bashing it gets around here, it’s active. I’m sure our zergs are not as large as those on the higher tiers, but that’s already been said. I suggest you confine your assertions to things you actually know about and then let the OP make his own decision.
Honestly if you play during prime time any server will do, but expect queues in the higher tiers. There is no server that is completely dead, all servers field at least ~150 players during prime time which might not sound like much, but trust me you won’t feel like you are walking around in a ghost town, and action will be plentiful. The lag is also a lot less common in the lower tiers.
The Guardian is stronger in WvW right now, but that doesn’t mean he will always be. I suggest going through the starter zone with both professions and making up your mind after having tried the game play of them both. My friend was dead set on making a Necromancer but gave it up shortly after starting, because the mechanics didn’t feel right to him.
Devonas Rest 4 lyfe
I’d suggest Gandara if you find the right people they’ll help you out with any questions. You don’t want to start in the upper tiers either as the play style is very different.
WvWvW Player Who Doesn’t Have Much of A Clue
So right now the game is installing on my computer and I’m really interested in WvW and see that as the main thing I want to do in the game. I’d like to get on a server which has a really active community and modest queue times.
Also I’ve been reading about the races and classes and was thinking of going with a Norn Guardian or Ranger. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to spec these characters and contribute to my world’s efforts? I’m more than willing to be a team player.
I’ll have to go with what most of the people in here are saying, and suggest Tier 2. FA, Kain and TC all have excellent guilds that would love to have a dedicated team player.
Of course FA is the best…
Tier 2 has the best match of tactics, havoc squads and zerging…and little to no queues during the week.
As for classes, the Guardian is probably more useful than Ranger, although a well played Ranger can be a huge help to a team.
I AM BEST!

Well I transferred to tier 7 a few months ago for a week with my small guild, and it really is almost a ghost town. At certain hours, there were maybe 15-20 allied players across all 4 maps, yet we would hold 200+ PPT. My guild 4 manned a decently upgraded keep (reinforced doors + mortars), and 3 manned a fully upgraded tower. About 5 of us were able to hold 40+ PPT on our own in an enemy BL, mostly due to noone even trying to recap supply camps.
The skill level was also awful. Bad siege placed everywhere, a good 60-75% of warriors were running 5 signets, and a friend and I even killed 10 people attacking our paper tower w/o siege.
To OP: I wouldn’t go below tier 3 ever. Also some people will mention queues, but don’t worry, I don’t even think tier 1 servers get queues on a majority of maps after reset night.
Go every class and race do u want.
Play what class/race you happy not play by order.
It not fun for you, when u have no fun u will have no faith in your character.
When that time come you will unhappy on www.
*If need less notice and blend weapon in your hand hard to see use asura small size they toooo small even half wall can cover your char.
*If u need to be very notic from 3mile alway play norn/charr Max size all whole enemy zerg wll see you from way point.
But if in WWW enemy NEED you death whatever race you will be death…don’t worry.
As stated above; I’d suggest finding the right guild, over server. They are the ones you will be spending most your time with. Not saying a good community is not important, but guild should be higher priority.
Guardian vs. Ranger.
I’m bias, but will try to be as objective as possible.
Guardians have a lot of utility and survivability. They drop buffs and take conditions for their allies. Basically a really good dmg sponge. But they are really hindered in the range department. Whether that be on the field or assaulting and defending an objective’s walls.
Rangers are very versatile, by being more selfish. They don’t offer much utility to their team, but can have as much survivability as a guardian. They are good in Melee and Ranged combat, where ever the fight should ensue. They also have some of the fastest consistent mobility. They don’t have many tools to utilize combo fields, which makes them less of a dps in larger battles.
Personally; I would suggest, find a class that’s fun for you to play, and learn ever facet of that class to create as much fun as u can. Every class has so many variable ways of playing them, that one way may seem horrible, but just changing a weapon can make it seem like an entirely new class. Gw2 broke the mold of set classes when it launched. Its more about your play style then the actual class.

But as others have said, tier 2 (Currnetly Tarnished Coast, Kaineng and Fort Aspenwood) is the best all-round tier to play on. Always action on at least one map, and only 1 or 2 maps (if at all) are queued outside of reset night. I suggest you look at each servers forums, and get an idea of what they’re about.

I’m not sure after the influx of players due to the recent update. However, in Tier 4 skill lag is present in all SM battles and we’ve even experienced it in large 3 way fights in the open field (probably 100-120 combatants total).
Since the tier system is basically population ranking it makes sense that fights would be smaller in Tier 5. We (SBI) were in Tier 5 recently and the fights were smaller back then but it was prior to the WvW update so they probably increased their participation a bit. I don’t remember experiencing skill lag at all in Tier 5, we only have it in very large battles in Tier 4…so if you want to avoid it completely I’d start with Tier 5.
