Hey Guys -

New to GW2 and just recently got a chance to play some wvw – loved it. Still learning how the point system and all that works but the question I have is build related for how I would like to play it. I simply do not PVP well at all, but I am good at strategy. Since WvW seems to be about capturing objectives to win….. I’m kind of liking that! What would be the the best class/build type if I were to just try and help my Team/Server out by simply trying to take over objectives and or acting as a Scout? ……. realizing that I simply am just not that good at PVP?

I played Shadowbane as a Scout for our guild and did it quite well – I could not kill hardly anything but I was a great scout

Thanks

If you want to scout probably a thief, good mobility and the ability to engage or disengage fights at will. If you want to take stuff, probably camps, perhaps something like a Nike warrior, ability to outrun almost anything that you can’t fight.

Gonna recommend Mesmer.

Thief can get yourself killed kitten ed easy.
Mesmer has actual invulnerability and access to good stability along with the things thief offers like stealth and teleports.

Any of the roaming classes with stealth or mobility would be good, as mentioned thief warrior mesmer druid and maybe engineer. You’ll be able to recap camps or harass enemy roamers. Mesmer probably being the best with the tools they have, I use to roam/scout/defend on a mesmer and warrior and it was a lot of fun.

Another derailing post. ^^

Druids are highly mobile, and are the easiest for capping camps/towers because you can use pets to tank. Strong in 1v1 due to good sustain and decent access to stealth but they lack real burst damage so against a solid player the fight won’t end until someone kittens up or other players jump in.

War and Mes are probably the strongest 1v1 fighters at the moment but War is much easier to play, very forgiving for bad players.

Mes is great because you can be terrible at fighting but be a huge help to your server by hiding inside keeps that they failed to take and portaling people in once things cool down.

Thief is the best for escaping zergs. Best mobility, 100% stealth uptime if you build for it. Downside is (depending on build) it has a lot of soft counters in 1v1 fights so if you already aren’t good at fighting you will have a hard time.

One point to make about the thief. Yes it squishier than the other two suggested (druid/mesmer) but it does have more stealth and mobility to is better at entirely avoiding fights.

Now here the thing with fighting. If you not that good at 1v1 fights you will likely die on your druid or mesmer anyways. This of course depends on how good/bad you are. In other words going with one them because they a bit more robust just delays the inevitable.

if you go to thief and focus on stealth you can avod combat entirely more easily than the other two.

If using theif make sure you take SB off hand and learn the places you can use it for vertical play. Ie you can port from ground level to cliffs or high ground above and an enemy can not follow. Mes can do this to an extent as well but you then get a cooldown.

There’s no real hard strategy behind WvW unfortunately. Besides hitting or defending the right objectives at the right time, the rest of it is more about the PvP aspect of things.

Being individually bad at PvP is not an issue in WvW, as it is very much a team game. Join a WvW guild and learn how to play a particular role in their composition, whether it be frontline, backline or skirmisher

Thanks again all -

I appreciate the positive and helpful feedback!

Looks like Thief is the right call for me – For the simple reason of “avoiding” fights.

So i am looking at a build for the “role” of “Pure Scout” – Which I have not been able to find. Though I did see some decent scouting videos to ensure that that is the Role I want to play.

So I guess speed and ability to disengage at will is the priority – followed up with enough DPS to take a camp solo? I see/read about stealth, evade and condition builds – is one of of those preferable over the others for my role?

As for a guild – Going to wait a few weeks and get at least “Not Awful” before applying

Thx again for all the help!

Ooops – Thx Babazhook! I just searched out some Stealth builds – Is that the “trapper build” as well?
