Hi, I just got this game last night and I am mostly interested in wvw pvp in this game. My play style is more ranged dps. I am not looking to know what is an OP class, just what is most useful to groups and guilds?

also, can you level in wvw? Or will I have to PvE also? Or is there enough WvW to play at all levels? So far I have only just tried to go through the entry story for a necro, have not seen much of the game.

I just want to find a fun toon that also will be able to find groups and such. thanks

Yes, you can level in WvW.. Your level is automatically upped to 80 when you enter WvW, but your native level will be the one you entered with.. So you’ll have more hp and such.. However, your armor will not be lvl 80, so prepare to be downed quite a bit..

Usefullness depends on what is needed in the group of course.. You can take a more supportive role (AoE heals and stuff) or you can be the heavy hitter of the group. Or something more in between.. Whatever floats your boat..

But I would strongly recommend to do some PvE first, since you’ll need to get a good feeling about your skills and how to utilize them..

hi there and welcome to WvW!
You can certainly level al the way to 80 in WvW. You have to do a little PvE when you create a new character, but after the “intro” is done, you can head straight to WvW. Here you will be up levelled to max level. You won’t be as powerful as a true lvl 80 with all exotic gear, but you can certainly enjoy the game in groups!
Make sure you complete you daily achievements and you’d need to gather and salvage a lot! I advise this because you can gain a significant amount of levels purely by crafting.
Classes that assist in WvW groups at the moment (and this is only my opinion):
Guardians – grants boons to allies and some good toughness
Elementalists – combo fields-R-us and the best DPS
Rangers – healing combo field as well as fire combo field while doing some decent ranged damage while being very difficult to kill.
Mesmers – portal bombs, null field, veil of invisibility
Warriors – all around tough guy and dps monsters. These guys are welcome in any party and can do ranged and cc damage
Engineers – some people has this class mastered and are very useful in groups. Some people don’t have it mastered (like myself) and is running around wondering how to achieve anything
Necros – AoE conditions are showing their true worth in large scale battles. Necros are always welcome and any group.
Thieves – very useful for burst damage and turning enemy pants slightly brown, but after the March 26 culling nerf thieves are no longer able to perma stealth and need to rethink their game plan.

Well, you can level in WvW(I did) But it takes quite a bit longer than what people do in PvE. I entered WvW at level 29 and never left, friends I had that were the same level was 80 about a week before me! Let’s not get started about the money you get out of it >.< It’s worth it though! :p

For ranged DPS you’d probably either want a Warrior or Ranger. Apparently Ranger is the harder of the two, but that opinion varies wildly(I only have one toon so I couldn’t tell you :p) I can tell you though that Ranger is quite a fun class to play with, it basically has every play style you could want! You can either be fully ranged DPS Or you can even go full melee.

Pets are quite an important and underrated aspect of the Ranger though, so you should be sure to be able to Micro manage them(not excessively so though, quite simple)

But that’s just my two cents on the class :] Also if you go for it, you will have to do some PvE to look for the Pets you want to use, you do get some in WvW but most of them are in PvE, so as far as that is concerned you will have to PvE, but it really isn’t too much trouble if you google it!

Other than that, Welcome to the game and hope you enjoy your stay!

thanks for the quick response. Scleameth, your breakdown of how the classes work in WvW is very helpful. I had started a necro, and I like the sound of them always being welcomed.

Well then, be sure you get a recording program running because as a necro you’re going to fear a lot of people off cliffs and you’d want to treasure every one of those moments

does race matter? I started a sylvari necro, because I liked the idea of death being part of nature. But cannot really tell if race matters much.

For necro, it doesn’t matter.
There are some no-no’s, like running an asuran engineer, for example(3 bad elites +2 and a half bad elites equals only half an elite to choose from) but unless you plan on some really exotic builds(an asura would potentially be a better race for a necro, if you planned on an epidemic build, cause it’d give you access to confusion), race does not matter outside some special cases, which really boil down to whether your profession absolutely lacks good elites, like engineers and elementalists do, or if you plan on using a very specific aspect from a specific race, which is, to be honest, kind of rare… Watch Xsorus’ vids, if you wanna see, what an asuran ranger can do that no other ranger brings to the table.
As long as you don’t plan on making an engineer that never, ever dies(full tankcat with norn’s become the snow leopard as elite) or something similarly unnecessary, don’t give much thought about races. The looks is everything, Guild wars 2 is a dress-up game.

Nah, race does not matter much. There might be some racial elite abilities that you might prefer over others, but for the most part the class elites are the preferred options. From all racials I’d say that Norn Snow leopard form would be most useful when trying to get out of a tight spot.

If you want to level fast use a necro… ._.
Races do count only for access to racial skills where Asura is possibly the best so if your profession have bad elite skills, get an asura.

Lst but not least do not believe at anything people say about elementalists :|
Seems its an extremely efficient pvp build that is misinterpreted in a different setting.
(expecialy the dps part…..elementalist DPS is awful)

Best current all around professions for WWW imho are Mesmer condition, and Guardian tank.
Necro is really effective but dunno if it has some support tricks….it just shines in large scale battles.

Also consider WWW changes a lot according to the tier (server) you play in..
Small servers doesn t have real large fights….so roamer classes could shine…..but if you use a roamer in a highly populated server you end up being almost useless.

Best roamers btw are currently:
Thief
Ele (Dagger/dagger scepter/dagger)

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

race breakdown:

human: Good cond removal utility, elites all have their strong spots

charr: whatever… There might be some Guardians out there who actually use the charrzooka as a ranged option… Rest is garbage.

Asura: Pain inverter and Technobabble are really great utilities, if you can fit them into the right builds. Just watch Xsorus’ vids over at youtube. Elites are the biggest garbage out of all the racials.

Norn: Become the snow leopard is maybe the strongest racial elite in the game, cause it allows things, no other racial allows. First, it grants stealth with 10 seconds cd, second, you can cover large distances quickly. This might make norn one of the best races for engineers who have absolutely no way of getting out of tight spots(besides walking)…

Sylvari: Healing seed might be good for some classes, the spirit elite seems decent if you lack alternatives… However, the true jewel here is the side-effect of another elite. Screw these 3 turrets, they do nothing… But the 3 seconds of invulnerability are VERY strong, even when it LITERALLY roots you.

As for necro, the only remotely interesting race might be asura, but that’s only for one very specific build and is only needed, if you REALLY want to apply confusion and got no mezz/engineer in your team who can do it better than pain inverter will ever do.

The only crime, turrets committed, is being good against the celestial meta.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.

While Necro would not be my first pick, it is a good choice. It might be a good idea to do at least some PvE just to learn your skills.
