Night Capping and YOU
This week we’ve (Fort Aspenwood) been paired against Maguuma and Sea of Sorrows.
A peek over at the ranking’s page;
SoS – 10 (green)
Mag – 11 (blue)
FA -12 (red)SoS is a known Oceanic server.
Mag has some quality SE Asian players.
FA is mostly NA.Friday night prime time; FA is dominating these two servers that “rank” above us..
Saturday morning; Mag and SoS have taken over the maps; FA is in third place (even though we claimed whole maps Friday night.)Not to be outdone; FA works hard to maintain their day point advantage. We begin by reclaiming whole maps.
Saturday evening; we rest with a 3k point lead.Sunday morning, we wake with SoS in the lead again. Everyone I hear is frustrated by this! SoS can literally get +600 points a tick with no opposition. We at most can get +460 to +520 a tick; as SoS and Mag also field some day pops.
We do not relent; FA resecures whole maps. Mag pretty much disappears from the game. We rest that night with a 7.5k leadMonday morning; we still have a lead. Monday evening, a great lead.
Tuesday morning, an even greater lead. Tuesday evening; we are 40k over SoS and almost 80k over Mag.We DID something about night capping; we stayed up late and woke up early. We are tired of this broken system and we went proactive. Do not give in to these night capping servers; dominate them.
Yeah let me stay up later so I can miss work..sauce.

Okay yeah, I just wanted to say that we are all equal, or at should have been anyway. I do agree with your final statement but… Currently aside from completely revamping servers like by creating a few Oceanic servers with region lock I can’t think of another solution. But even that has its flaws as what.. we’d only be able to make only a few servers on that end.
why not SEA servers, so you play with koreans, chineses etc?
there certinaly wouldnt be a lack of players to fight then
then they can region lock the rest of servers and everyone will be happy
Reality struck for FA cause right now playing again legit 24/7 coverage black gate, it’s black gate +580, TC + 60, FA +55 after it being virtually tied during prime time. Being on TC is fun because of the community, but it’s clear that we are too strong in primetime for tier 4 and too outnumbrered in offpeak for tier 3
I completely agree that everyone’s time is equally valuable, but the flip-side of the coin is that with the current system not everyone is getting equal value out of the game. Pitched PvP battles are much more fun than running around capping everything unopposed, but nighttime players don’t have as much chance to experience that the same way as prime-time players.
The current matching system tries to fix this, but the problem is that which other servers you’d be best matched with varies depending on the time of day. I think the best solution is simply to embrace this fact.
Break each day up into e.g. 6 hour chunks, and have the server matchups be different for each period. So e.g. the servers you are matched with from 6pm-midnight would be different than the ones for midnight to 6am, etc. This would give you MUCH finer controls over population/skill balancing than you currently have, because it would effectively be like immediately quadrupling the number of servers, in addition to working like a smoothing function for the population/skill. It would also give night crews an equal opportunity to experience an enjoyable level of competition, so they are getting the same value out of the game as everyone else.
(edited by Senik.6549)
While I agree, that everyone should be able to play no matter what the time, I couldn’t help noticing this:
“How we’ve came to this conclusion is that no player’s time is more valuable than another.”
The people who play at night are indeed a minority, or so I believe and observe. Yet keeping those objectives at night gives an equal amount of resources. Doesn’t this mean that playing at night is more valuable per player?
It’s not simple to fix, but it feels like getting hit when you can’t defend, if you simply can’t or don’t want to play at night. So this is why I like Senik’s idea. Or any similar idea – because if everyone’s time is supposed to be equally valuable, playing at night shouldn’t mean bigger personal effect on the result.
So with the night capping issue, and international player issue (i’m assuming these are the issue based on a few pages of the form) no one seems to be queing for wvw unless they are the dominate server. I transferred to 4 different servers and its the same on every server. One dominate server with a huge lead plus 3 orbs. That means the other 2 servers just are not playing. If that is not an Issue Anet then I dont know what is. I dont care if its night capping or international players but the problem needs to be recognize. This is not FUN. You could just fix the problem by killing all the rewards for wvw then I couldn’t care less what happens.
Guys, the solution is simple…just switch servers and join one with a heavy day and night time presence. Soon we’ll have 3 servers that always fight each other. Problem solved. If your server starts losing because of population issues, just switch again.
A few great solutions that I’ve heard:
1) The Outmanned Buff should actually buff your combat stats when activated and it should be progressively more powerful depending on how “outmanned” a server is at the time.
2) The dominate server should score fewer points every tick while the Outmanned Buff is active against a weaker server.
3) The Outmanned Buff should also buff the stats of the veteran guards.
All of these changes would affect servers equally, and they would only be active when one server significantly outnumbers the other on the battlefield.
I’m not against 24 play… but I wish match ups considered this factor world-wide. Currently you have of segrated… US vs European…
I’m in a US guild…we have quite a few oceanic folks… one has too to suceed in Wv3, etc… when the bulk of us are offline.
So why keep us separate?
Thinking you need to look at all the numbers for match up. If a server in the US appears to have lots of oceanic…then shouldn’t they complete with the Europeans vs their US counterparts (who don’t and can’t compete as the bulk of their population isn’t on at the same time)!?!?
Transferring a US Guild (of allegedly 1500) as has happened on Desolation which was already a high population EU server is not a way to fix the problem either! It simply means the EU players on that server since launch now can’t get in at all during evening peak times or late night. Why are there regions at all?
System of counting points for World Rating is not fair at all.
In every competition important is to give equal chances and fair play.
Servers with large population and with players from few time zones always will be in top 10
This system promots camping not fight
In prime time servers with Medium population, when guilds are online give good fight claim back and conquer land but that mean nothing at late hours random zerg incoming taking all land and points getting counted when people sleep.
Servers Merge
Some one will say merge servers but that is not good idea either, maybe server will get more night crew but prime time … queues and no guild want to wait to get squad on field
Right there is few servers where guilds migrate all ready and that servers could be merge of course
Way as points are counted need to be improve for sure.
for example :
kill/death ratio as part score
during prime time that will show how squads are effective and at night reward efforts of gang party’s or solo hunters
points given for conquer only instead counted every 10 min.
that will simple remove high difference in score,
high populated servers might still win as at end they will take and control most, but less populated servers can reduce that difference by attacking on different positions
will be more actions, fast attacks, more skirmish and good deffences
This also will remove tendency to zerging because players will have to split and cover more places to avoid lost.
Example of score
SM 1000
Garrison 500
Keeps 200
Towers 100
taking and secure Orb 1000
also 1000 for stoping invaders with orb when was taken and placed it back
Some bonus in points as reward for defending
for example if players successfully secure place and hold enemy away by 10 min earn 10% of value that fortification
Maybe extra bonus for holding land with secured supply camps
but points earn for time of ownership not global counting
That give another task for players to secure vulnerable points and mess up supply lines their enemies
Maybe some other ideas?
Also could statistic of kill/death ratio be publish for ours information?

I’m just wondering which great Korean mind decided it is ok to play battleground with 200 vs 20 ppl ??
Ok, Arena.net. That’s ok. I agree with the night capping thing.
But what’s not Ok: Some Servers (e.g. Vizunah Square (Fr) Europe) have many Canadians playing on it. So while most of us, in the EU, are sleeping because it’s night, in Canada it’s bright day. As a result on the next day, Viznuah got 50000 more points and all upgraded fortresses are gone. so no need any more for us to fortify the keeps.
That’s not even a little bit fair. It sux
Please seperate EU from Canada, South America and so on. Several diffent time zones against one timezone isnt cool.
Also, its no fun anymore.
U could also open a third bracket beaneth US and EU ranking, called EU mixes US Servers. So these servers can play against each other
Or another solution, force everyone to play on his/her own continetal servers
Wow that wud be great, so fair. really nice
maybe there are more solutions, but please do something.
i dont play soccer with 17 guys (9 of them candians) against 8 too. Thanks
Its a MMO there is no pause button, just because you are in bed doesnt mean everyone else is. To be a progressing server you will always have a night team no matter where you are in the world.
yes is an MMO, and yes there is no pause, but it make me sick when a EU server whin only because they have some US or Canadian guild playng for them in the night… it just don’t seem right to me..
Separate the zones, so if someone whant to nightcap at least he will do it with is bare hands and being awake in the night, and not just winning sleeping becouse they have their overseas friends…
guys, don’t worry, all servers with different time zones team will be at the top of list and will play with each other soon. The same thing will be with other “normal” servers, but in the lower part of table
the system will sort it out automatically
80% of my guild m8s stopped playing gw2 because of “invisible army bug” and also due to the night capping twisting score up.

^ game seems so much less lively than I had hoped. A lot of people left.
Also the lack of personal progress in WvWvW and the abysmal gold effort on legendary weapon puts objectives of endgame still too far. But game is still new, lets c where Anet takes it.
i Love all this talk of “night teams” its not night when i play its day time. the world is bigger than Europe and NA. I come from NZ one of the first Places in the world to see a new day. so therorictaly most of you are a day behind all the NZ players. I enjoy WvW and think the idea of it being a 24 hour 7 day a week battle is great. I never have a problem getting full on battles or exciting Confrontation.
If night capping is okay, then why bother with region based servers? Lump everyone together so that the population is mostly spread out. If you do have region based servers, then the natural inclination in order to achieve victory is to stack as many players in your enemies off-peak hours as possible so that you can faceroll with no effort. That’s a very basic idea, it’s viable, it’s doable. Except that it’s not fun, at all. This isn’t war, this is a game which people play for entertainment and waking up to a losing battle is not entertaining at all.
This is not EVE.
I am absolutely for region-based “quiet hours” in which WvW can’t be entered. Start it at 2AM server, end it at 8AM server for example. Night capping becomes a nonissue. Simple.
Painbow.6059: Ignore what anyone else who doesn’t agree with me has said because its wrong.

Whilst i don’t like nightcapping, your solution is terrible, what do people who don’t live in NA or EU do, they don’t have regional servers. What about night workers, students, insomniacs, early risers or anyone else who wants to play between 2-8?
The issue is 24/7 servers vs prime-time servers and the fault lies with the prime time servers not the 24/7 ones.
Even if you many to butcher the 24/7 servers, the problem will then become who sleeps later.
Even if you force players to play in their own continents, you will still get night capping because server activity varies. One server will sleep a hour later than another and low a behold, the map is theirs. What then, force people to play country specific servers?
WvWvW right now is completely kitten, and no fun at all for anyone who wishes to play “by the rules” (and isn’t a lame lowlife that decides to join the dominating world).
Please revert back to 24 hour cycles until you get paid transfers up, thanks. (It would fit nicely with 24 hour transfer lockouts).
Realise that pleasing everyone is entirely impossible. However I have a suggestion that may help please a very large number of players.
First, a complete revamp of the servers would be necessary. No more NA or EU servers.
There would be 3 types of servers based on primetimes for WvW.
Servers A = 3 pm to 3 am EST
Servers B = 11 pm to 11 am EST
Servers C = 7 am to 7 pm EST
Players would pick a server on one of the three server types, based on their desired times to play the game the most.
Now in order to balance WvW a bit more, you could easily do a few things:
1) reduce the income of points during off peak hours by increasing the time between each ticks. Maybe 1 tick every 30 minutes or every 45 minutes instead of every 15 minutes.
2) Buff the health on Fortification Walls/ Gates, and buff NPC Guards and Keep/Tower/Supply camp Lords to make fights last longer and be more difficult even if unopposed.
All this combined would allow players from all around the world to enjoy WvW in their respective time zones, Let players who wish to play overnight continue to do so and it would also deter entire guilds from other time zones from moving onto a specific server with a different time zone to simply dominate via “night capping” as night capping would become significantly more difficult and less rewarding.
I’m starting to wonder if the match ups should be based on wvw attendance and not wins. Further, I’m wondering if having a separate guild system for wvw is in order to keep everyone working together more efficiently. Most guilds I joined, while having hundreds of members, less than a handful were in wvw.
Haha, Darsh I made a whole topic about the suggestion but apparently 24/7 battles are ‘fine’.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.
Simple solution to people complaining about ‘night capers’ log onto an American server or make a recruitment post for a guild to join your server (or vice versa, I hear that US guilds are also looking for EU guilds to do the same on their servers) and hey presto things magically even out. Get used to the ‘night capers’ as you call them because WvWvW is 24/7 nothings going to stop it, Anet have already stated this that Wv3 is working as intended.
Choose PvP if you think WvW’s never ending battle does not fit some gamers. I know this is to accomodate the benefits of all time zone’s player. It is really good in my opinion. 24/7 battles are definitely great!
Haha, Darsh I made a whole topic about the suggestion but apparently 24/7 battles are ‘fine’.
I’m not against 24/7 battles. My suggestion would allow to keep 24/7 battles.. but would simply change a few things for off peak hours to keep things interesting and not completely demoralize ppl when they log on to find out the opposing servers got a 30k points lead overnight.
Right now, unless your server has a strong Oceanic player base who can take over at night, you get dominated and usually are unable to make up for the points loss overnight. This completely demoralizes players from getting into WvW… and trying to run some kind of organized WvW campain. Right now, players would rather sit the week out and wait to see what the next week will bring. By doing that, they drop in ranking significantly and then end up completely DOMINATING the next servers they get matched against.
Open pvp is, and has always been, a horrible concept. Player numbers are more important than player skill and it’s impossible to balance numbers in an open world environment.
With GW2, this problem is exacerbated due to mechanics like the ‘downed state’ and the fact that anyone can recover players from any kind of defeat. The existence of such mechanics wouldn’t even be required if gameplay was balanced properly in the first place.
I’m not even sure why the game is called ‘Guild Wars’ anymore. I certainly have never felt like I was fighting another guild.
Stop complaining..simple as that. There’s no need to adjust points gain, etc. its World v World v World 24/7 pvp. you need to either find groups of folks on your server that can fight on those off hours, all servers have them, or go out and recruit folks. Another option is for YOU to transfer to a server so that YOU are playing on off hours. (you can also do PvP as it’s pretty much the same thing on a slightly smaller scale, and balanced population)
Are there ways to improve WvWvW? Yes:
1 – remove all the npc garbage….losing the map while 50 folks are over doing the jump puzzle is kitten Move all those things into an “Overflow” map of some kind while you’re waiting to get into your wvwvw. WvWvW should be about player vs players, not environment.
2 – do a 10:1 entry ration for wvwvw. meaning at no time no team on the map will be outmanned by more than 10 folks. (do away with outmanned buff) if a team isnt organized enough to overcome a 10 man difference, they were going to lose anyways. This will increase queue times though =(
3 – Decrease orb bonus stats to 1/2/3% and 10/20/30 power. right now a team with all 3 orbs wrecks the other 2 teams. and as the orbs tend to get taken in off hours, peak hour folks stand almost no chance to retake them.
Another option is to create different WvWvW servers based on wvwvw populations. Meaning 1 server has NA peak folks in the day, with EU peak folks on at night…and vice versa on another server. That way peak players are always fighting against peak players.
But no matter what is done, if anything, Arenanet should NEVER “punish” some players because others are upset things arent going as easy as they’d hoped. Remember PvP isnt “organized”. WvWvW is supposed to be, so if you’re in there solo, playing solo, then you’re the one doing something wrong, not the game nor the concept.

Commanders need to be able to “SEE” everyone on the map, there seriously needs to be a raid UI of some type. how can u command your folks if 1: u dont even know how many you have so u cant determine what youre capable of doing and 2: where they’re at so u can divert the right folks to the right spots. a chat channel and an icon isnt enough to actually command a battle.

Great game. Poor Scoring System. When the night hits the keeps should be immune to damage but also reward no points and another event for getting points for kills should take place

Why the hell is PvG (Player vs Gate) worth as much as PvP?
First excuse me if other devs have commented after Matt, did not feel much like reading all 23 pages.
I would love an explanation about how my time is as valued as people playing @ night though, last 3 weeks i have logged on to a 500+ point difference between the server that has a presence when we are asleep and the server that’s capped and fortified everything with no resistance.
I bought this game solely for WvW, thinking that the amount of time they had spent making it that they might have made a semi decent job, how i wish now i could get a refund.
While i agree that the game is meant to be fun for everyone, its hardly fun now, all that’s happening is people are changing servers making the situation worse.
There are some good suggestions in this thread and while i am old enough to know the situation will never be perfect it can at least be better than the current system
Before GW2 i spent years paying a monthly fee for my pvp, while u still had badly matched games there the bonus was they didn’t last a week (well 3 weeks). Downed state totally spoils spvp for me ( how imbalanced are some states compared to others) and now there is no point playing wvw when its so poorly designed that 20 people get a free ride for 6+ hours getting easy exp, karma, gold
Oh and to the IDIOTS that are comparing a war to a gameGreat work , when you launch an offensive in war even against a sleeping enemy, you find they dont stay asleep for 8 – 12 hours
Looks like i am going to be “forced” to jump on the server jumping bandwagon due to the company’s lack of being able to rectify a situation that there server transfers have caused.
Really hoped they had did some market research before they designed a wvw but it seems like they just let the office junior knock something up in his lunch break and are now too busy spending there profits to even bother trying to get a fairer solution
Well at least it’s understood that there is a problem that needs to be solved here.
If Anet are dead set on keeping 24×7 WvWvW then it looks to me like you have the following solutions with my personal feelings on them.
I view WvWvW like a sport. The “fun” for me is playing to be the best you can with the time allowed to you. You want a scoring system to know where you are versus your peers on performance to a set of reasonable rules that reflects who is genuinely best based upon skill/strategy/performance – not on who can take keeps with a large population when the other server(s) are at a low population.
Potential solutions are:
1) Let a natural migration of populations occur. Guilds and alliances across all servers have worked out that the name of the game is keeping WvWvW population full 24×7 in order ot win and skill/strategy is of secondary importance and so you’ll find a lot of transfers going on to try and ensure this. Certainly on my server a number of Guilds have recently moved from Gunnar’s Hold to Blacktide for this reason.
I personally think that having a timezone spread population is the most viable solution on a pure WvWvW basis. Although the massive downside is queueing when prime-times overlap. It’s also a massive pain to see you loose all your guild perks you’ve built up when you move. Obviously manufacturing this will be difficult, but not impossible to achieve. Of course it would of helped if Anet hadn’t regionalised the servers in the first place.
2) Alter point scoring system.
This sounds great in theory, but I think in practice will not make a great difference. Servers will still cap in their on prime time, while other server populations are asleep purely to ensure that all keeps are fully upgraded and capped for when the other server(s) population wake up.
My opinion is that there will still be an advantage to the servers with 24×7 population. As long as that advantage remains the problem remains. If your prime-time is while the others servers are asleep then what are you meant to be doing in WvWvW? This is ultimately why I think spread timezone server populations is the only way to have 24×7 system that will work.
3) Have an open and close time for WvWvW. Not an option since Anet have said they are not willing to look at this. Having said that if 1) is not feasible then I think this is the only other workable solution. Anet would have to regionalise servers down further for this to work though and select opponents with a max timezone difference of +/- 2 hours. This would probably lead to lots of uneaqual match-ups as well.
I haven’t really seen anyo hter solutions, but could well of missed them in the many pages.
How about limiting NA players to NA servers and EU players to EU servers?
Open pvp is, and has always been, a horrible concept. Player numbers are more important than player skill and it’s impossible to balance numbers in an open world environment.
With GW2, this problem is exacerbated due to mechanics like the ‘downed state’ and the fact that anyone can recover players from any kind of defeat. The existence of such mechanics wouldn’t even be required if gameplay was balanced properly in the first place.
Not sure what the mechanic’s of downed state etc have to do with balancing. From what I can see/observe the downed state and recovering are merely mechanisms to remove some of the tedium from the game, while still retaining a measure of consequences (the consequence of death being you are temporarily out of the fight – either due to waiting for revival or respawning). This is a game we play and as such, no one is particularly interested in having to run all the way back to a location after dying – lets face it, its boring as all hell having to do that.
In any non-trivial system, it is nigh-on-impossible to achieve balance due to the exponential number of permutations involved. Flipping coins and the rock-paper-scissors style games are some of the only games where you do achieve complete balance.
In any MMO / persistent game, achieving balance is further hindered by the available time players have, the immediate resource (money) they can bring to bear and plain old skill.
I think ANet have done a pretty good job on the balance front. They tweak stuff every now and again when players find loopholes / exceptions as and when they can. Inevitably, we get ranters who hate certain classes as they are OP etc, sometimes with merit, sometimes without.
I’m not even sure why the game is called ‘Guild Wars’ anymore. I certainly have never felt like I was fighting another guild.
Lol…I’d 100% agree with this tho! I wish they’d change WvW to be guild based instead. That would eliminate soo many problems.
“How about limiting NA players to NA servers and EU players to EU servers?”
The major night capping issue is coming from SEA so where do they go?
First Light Gaming [DAWN] – PvX OCEANIC COMMUNITY – BLACKGATE
http://www.firstlightgaming.com
A solution that fixes another problem and helps limit how far a realm can get ahead while helping far behind realms catch up:
Ehmry Bay – Legion of the Iron Hawk [Hawk]
Or here’s an idea just restrict NA, EU. Oceanic realms to localized IP address’.
I have a better idea, lets put all the QQers on 2 servers that WvW one another. Matches will last 5 minutes with a 4:59 q time guaranteed.
1. Close free server transfers
2. Keep 24/7 WvW battles
3. Introduce flexible scoring system based on current player activity.
4. Give +1 score for every player killed.
5…
6. Profit.
Well I would like to Quote Anet on something " We dont want any players time to be more valuable than others players time". You say this claiming to not want to alienate off peak players but as it stand in WvW off peak players time is more valuable than peak players time. During peak time you cant claim 6 keeps in an hour. Its just not possible but in off peak times its a pretty simple matter and happens all the time and it makes there time worth more. A good plan to curb this is to implement a scoring ratio based on number of active players. If all realms have equal players or semi close players then they should get normal scoring but if one realm has a quarter of the players they should get extra points for the things they hold or the other team should get reduced points. ( i am only proposing to change the total score gained at a time, the score that affects the rating of the realm, but not the server wide buff gains)
This cannot be repeated enough.
Off-peak players are currently worth more than on-peak players. Simply put: they contribute more to the server’s victory by running up the score.
How does ArenaNet give both off-peak and on-peak players the same value (which is their stated aim)?
The heavy-handed method is to use IP blocks or forcibly reallocate players by IP which I doubt is good business, and will never happen.
The best long-tem method is probably to modify the scoring system so both off-peak and on-peak players contribute the same value to their server’s victory. What the modifications would be has been discussed elsewhere.
I have no issue with NIGHT CAPPING at all. The issue is with the unbalance in numbers during “off peak” times.
Why is there no even balancing of the number of players ? Rely simple to do :
server 1 has 15 people in a battle ground.
server 2 will only be able to field a max of 22 people in that same battle ground ie no more than 50% more than the next largest server is fielding.
This will lead to a rapid balancing of servers as people would land up in long Que times and they don’t want that. So people would move to other servers to actually get to be in WvW. It would also stop this rubbish of 50v1 fights that are currently in place
The buff that is given to servers with lower numbers may as well be removed…..whoever thought of that buff should be taken outside and shot for their complete stupidity.
Some of the problem is the whole advancement system, as soon as you get a good match-up it gets broken up the following week.
They need to end this whole server ranking bs and just pair servers with similar populations and prime times
Anet just match servers by pop and prime times, at least the activity levels between servers will match more. Right now it’s boring when 2 out of 3 just give up 48 hours into the match.
I wanted to post a bit on here because I was playing last night at a time where our numbers were dwindling and the influx of enemy players from another region pushed our server back to basically its last tower/supply camp. I spent a good portion of my time split between a few different things.
1) spamming, stay here and defend in team chat once ever 15 seconds. Please if your team only has a small foothold please get it supplied up and upgraded before trying to take a keep on the other side of the map.
2) Organizing a small group of people (5-10) to make targeted raids on supply camps to slow down enemy supply gain. Synchronizing taking all supply camps right around the score tick is a good way to mitigate some of the overall score damage being done by not holding any keeps.
3) Chatting with various people about night capping. This third one was time consuming, especially because I wished I could have posted what I was telling them on the forums. Well now I am trying to do that. Let’s assume that my private chats were much more compelling, eloquent, and well reasoned than this because it was midnight and I was frantically chatting in /whisper with 3 people while simultaneously fighting off hordes of enemies.
First of all I just want to say, the game is young. We know there are areas that we want to improve. Being steamrolled into a corner of your map is not the only problem in the game and not even the only problem in WvW. We are working on these areas, but I know it’s still possible to have lots of fun playing, and as the game matures these areas are going to get better and better.
I know we all know this, but it is nice to remember that WvW is persistent. This is one of the best things about it and we don’t want to inherently make logging in at non peak hours less rewarding than logging in during primetime. We already have long queues and off-peak is a chance to avoid those and still play the game. That being said, there are some things we need to do to encourage you to log in even when your world is being dominated by a massive rush of enemies who live in a part of the world where they aren’t checking their watches to see if the sun is about to rise. We have been talking about this since about 2 or 3 days into launch and have some ideas. The problem is many of them require resources which we do not have right now as we work to keep the game stable and bug free in its infancy. However some of these ideas have some traction and we are working on them actively. They will still take some time to implement and time to test, but we are not ignoring the fact that players want to feel like their late night efforts are worth more than just a pat on the back.
- Players need more rewards for WvW.
- Players need to be given opportunities to break out of their base when they are trapped in by a wall of arrow carts.
- Guilds need a better reason to claim and HOLD objectives.
- Commanders need to be rewarded for their success and need to be able to reward their followers in turn.
- And so and and so forth.
We are just as into playing GW2 and WvW as you guys are, and we welcome and appreciate all of your feedback. Just know your feedback is going to a good place where we are constantly trying to improve the experience for each and every player. I hope this helps clear up our position and ease your concerns about the long term health of this part of the game. I know this was really long so…
TL;DR Night capping is fun, WvW is 24/7 but getting steamrolled is not fun and we need to work on that to make it better.
OK, time to get back to Bluelake Tower in JQ Borderlands, there is bound to be a mass of HoD invaders at the front door!

Problem is not in people, who can only play at night. Problem is, when big part of server players is from another region. For example maney people of EU server are from US. And when where is prime time in US, EU players go to sleep. And this US players capture almost empty maps. There are US servers, so wth do they play on EU servers and ruin WvW?! Because it’s Anet’s fault:
1) Current score system rewards night capping.
2) No restrictions in quene, easy domination = free win. People like free things.
3) No language specific servers for US region. So a lot of french (for example) people from US go to EU servers and ruin WvW for EU players.
Anet said, all people are valuable, even night playing minority (I don’t count now zergs from another region). But what about majority? Many people play for WvW. But WvW is pointless, when your pure region server plays againts mixed server, because it’s 100% lose. So people become to:
1) Leave their servers, making situation here even more terrible and hopeless.
2) Leave game for more balanced PvP projects.
Anet had years to think about WvW system and balance it, given the different regions and online. But current situation is terrible. Look at EVE online (yes, there is one server, but many star systems), people from different regions play in balanced mass PvP system.
