we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.
I’m talking about three servers here,
Blackgate
Fort Aspenwood
Henge of DenraviAlthough their coverage and WvW participation are in different leagues, they all won 7 rounds undefeated. Besides the first week match with BG/JQ/SoR all of the matches that these 3 servers had were blowouts, the competing servers never had a chance. The players on these servers are not to blame, they all should enjoy the rewards they earned, however I think it will be unhealthy for WvW in the long term when some servers have a monopoly on winning. I’d like to see more competitive matches in Season 2, WvW will be more fun for all of us if that happens.
And I’m from Dragonbrand, I’m not sore about anything, we never had a chance at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
You did have a target rich environment for fighting though, better then being bored at the top.
Maybe they could take a page from baseball. FA and presumably HoD have their best matchups a league up. So like the AL will sometimes play the NL in the regular season, maybe occasionally FA plays Maguuma, and that counts as a regular season game.
Yeah it was pretty boring. Although other servers were a good match during prime time, no other server has nearly the same coverage as FA does. I would log on, get some good fights for maybe an hour or two, but by about 10pm PST the karma train would start and we would we rocking 600+ ppt. Great for wxp, but truly and utterly boring.

Its partly everyones fault, especially in NA S1, money was offered, people took it, what can you do?
The rewards for winning exacerbate the problem, encouraging people to flee low-pop servers (or any server without a strong overnight presence). Edge of the Mists will make it even worse. That takes the sting out of queues on high-pop servers.
If we want real competition and good fights, underdogs must be rewarded. People need a good reason to stick on the Isle of Janthir, etc, and show up to fight. Right now, they are better off transferring before S2 to ensure they will win, get heaps of karma, complete whatever the meta is with ease etc.

I can’t speak for henge, but I can say that FA bought no guilds. We had multiple large guilds transfer to FA just a day or 2 before seasons started once it was sure that we would be in silver league simply because they wanted that top spot, and that sure did clinch it.
WvW shouldn’t even be called WvW.
Server with most coverage wins.
I remember a suggestion somewhere that PPT from camps/towers/keeps should have a cap. This will narrow the gap from points between two servers when Server A with 24/7 coverage starts capping towers/keeps from Server B (which has half the coverage of Server A) when they are sleeping. This makes it much more possible for Server B to catch-up with Server A during Server B’s prime time if they fought smart and well.
Its partly everyones fault, especially in NA S1, money was offered, people took it, what can you do?
It’s Anet’s fault. Period. People just play the game like they’re allowed to play it. Only Anet makes the rules.
Yeah, gotta point this one at Anet to resolve, or get creative on how to address. Which they haven’t come up with any solution yet. Likely talked about it, but probably little they can do atm.
Its not like they don’t see how the wins occur. This has been in the system since the titan alliance with hod.
The 3 servers themselves just played moneyball accordingly and personally I say that’s smart leadership by looking at the game, looking at the rules, and finding how best they can give there server a shot at the title. They did. Whose to blame them for having deeper pockets or leadership who actually got off there butts and took that step?
Anet has to resolve so that is not the case moving forward, but until then, take a page outta there book or don’t get emotionally invested into the seasons. It is what it is.
EDIT: Actually i’m going to retract my statement, and only give props to BG. The other two servers didn’t accelerate or aim to fill gaps, rather they FA kinda slid down to silver, and HoD I have no idea what happened. But BG leadership played it proper. JQ should get some credit too, they picked up some OCX SEA on top of there already strong force.

I agree, I was surprised to see them give incentives to transfer to the top servers of the leagues.. If anything, they made the population imbalance problems worst. They should have done quite the opposite, and give incentive to transfer to the underdogs indeed.
Agreed again Edge of the Mists will, even if it was not the main goal, not help. It will remove the sting from playing on a stacked server, so not much incentive to transfer to a low-pop one.
Another problem (side-effect) is the ability to guest for PvE. It sounds all great at first, but it isn’t. For example, my server (GoM) is always Very High/High, yet our WvW population is scarce, and even our PvE pop is scarce, not much activity or events. GoM would be one of the servers where Temples are almost always closed. PvErs guest to top tier servers, where they will play most of the time, yet their account is still bound to GoM, keeping us “virtually” at ‘Very High’, making it very costly to transfer to us, while there is actually not much active population on the server. This sux big time.
So hmm, WvW isn’t getting more competitive anytime soon. Stack stack stack, stack some more :-)
Its partly everyones fault, especially in NA S1, money was offered, people took it, what can you do?
It’s Anet’s fault. Period. People just play the game like they’re allowed to play it. Only Anet makes the rules.
Anet’s at fault for the structure and the system that they have set up. However, the players are certainly at fault in many ways. Yes Anet set up the system, but the players chose to do what they do. People don’t like rules and consequences, but most times they don’t want to take the steps to prevent those from having to be enforced or happening.
Yes Anet should see that the players will ruin things if they are allowed to. It’s both Anet and the player bases fault. When I say the player base I’m referring to those that are part of the problem.
Commander
This will get much worse before it gets better. As long as server transfers remain easily available, people will switch servers to the winning side. I don’t see Anet changing this mechanic any time soon as server transfers (@ 1800 gems a pop) are a massive cash cow for them. They’re not even selling pixels, it’s literally money out of thin air. I wouldn’t expect any amount of forum complaints to change this.
When the bottom tier servers get empty enough they will merge and the cycle will continue. Untill Tier 1 is all that’s left.
Season 2 should just be edge of the mists / alliance battles. Blues/reds/greens all play for there color.
7 weeks long, no flipping matches.
If these chests have significantly better loot for the winners and their is a S2 like S1, you can bet servers will be even more stacked next time around.
One of my observations when fighting FA, for nearly 12 hours each day every map in BP would be out manned. Not FA’s fault but hardly a winnable fight in those circumstances.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
Another problem is the meta achievement. I don’t see how a server that doesn’t stand much of a chance in any of the matches, how they could get the achievement.
I swear I’ve read some posts on here saying people switched to winning servers just so they could finish it.
however I think it will be unhealthy for WvW in the long term when some servers have a monopoly on winning.
<shrug> Since release I count four servers in NA who have had significant runs at dominance: on release, HoD was dominant under Titan Alliance, until TA disbanded; SoS had a good run at the top; JQ is still the winningest server since TA left; and now it’s BG.
In 14 odd months that’s not a bad rotation of NA’s top dog.
Regardless, I think a point that’s often lost in these discussions is that coverage reflects server leadership. The leadership of some servers puts considerable effort into recruiting for, organising, and managing their WvW population. Those servers tend to have success – to which there’s a positive feedback loop.
I’d also argue that inter-server politics are part of what passes for GW2’s WvW meta. It’s EvE-lite and we don’t have a Mittani playing it, but it adds spice and interest to what are otherwise disposable WvW encounters.
Servers who don’t have such leadership will never be competitive. ANet can’t introduce a system to mitigate our shortcomings.
Anet develops and maintain the game, so this one is squarely aimed at them. Until they remove the ability to make copious amounts of cash off transfers, it’ll never change.

Also in europe we have the same problem bro,
Vizunah Square -Is the server who has won most T1 matchups in GW2 ( EU and NA )
Desolation – Former N°3 in T1 EU
Drakkar lake – A server that should be in silver league
WvW is not about fair-play, which is the base of all sports, but also has no rules, who has most coverage/player base wins, end of story.
Please look up at this link, this will explain what WvW is all about :

Yeah, I was one of those hoping for Season One to bring back some competition, it did in a way but what we we got is a badly implemented “e-sport”.
In the end we got so many uncompetitive matchups due to population imbalance in the EU silver League; as usual coverage wins the day and the PPT becomes irrelevant for most of the day.
We expected Vizunah to do everything within their powers to win the Gold League, they allowed a “transfer period” with discounted gem Prices, that did not help many wvw Communities either.
I guess the good thing is that Anet should have an idea of the peak populations for most servers, while the hype and momentum was at it’s peak for each server.

This has been suggested many times, which would also align closer with Anet’s WvW is supposed to be PvP casual. Whether that’s what we all want is another issue.

I play on SF and for most of the week so far we have been outnumbered on 2-3 maps most of the time. DH who we are facing only played HOD 1 time while we went against them 2 weeks in a row. The numbers I have seen have dropped after the first HOD match and it has just gotten worse. At the end of the week what few oceanic players we had are going to transfer and alot of pve players have already decided not to return.
Hey whatup i been on alotta servers, but the longest i been on is Piken Square at lvl 80, cause EU server best time to wvw for a usa player and i barely lag on a normal wireless fios. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78PxTnHFDSM&list=PL9csOb26hMWkAg-K6DOcmHcUTItTtR8Wf&index=6 this dates back to when i was in [EMP] guild on Blackgate server. and its mixed with an old different golem vid. soo idk exactly. but that was before [Icoa] split to another server and Blackgate fell hard for 3 weeks in WvW and SoR hired some outer server WvW guilds to Xfer over and help them dominate us for a time till i left off to my story from there :P

Agreeing with this. Haven’t given much thought to possible solutions, butperhaps one could calculate an ELO rating for every server, using that to predict the result of a matchup. If a server exceeds expectations, then they gain ELO as well as get extra rewards.

Even that is pretty BS,
Blackgate- heavy recruitment to stack the server/buy guilds..bandwagons as well. JQ was close to the same and likely favorite but a nice SoR/BG beat down pushed them out.
Fort Aspenwood- basically tanked to get to silver, “oh we were disheartened prior to league because we were always facing much tougher server, but we were rejuvenated once leagues started.” Stacked server right before league started with xfers once they knew for sure we would be silver. Even after leagues still got big guild xfers from the losing servers…cause people wanted to win
HOD- Would have prob lost if IoJ had still been there, but they got bandwagons that pumped them to Silver, only to be left right before league(FA) and even during…by the end they were a solid bronze again.
League was a joke, no one really earned the wins if you won it was because you were already recognized as the favorite and then band wagon ensured you would remain unstoppable.
Xfers should have been locked prior to League and remained so.

Blackgates “heavy Recruitment” was no different than JQ or SoR, they both had recruitment threads up and their leaders were actively scouting as well. You say buying guilds as if we flat out bought and now own guilds, this is not the case. All new guilds came to Blackgate on there own and if necessary, part of the transfer costs were provided. This is no different than JQ and SoR, both have helped interested guilds join there ranks. As for bandwagoning, that can’t be helped, for what reason a guild or person has to come to a server is there own business, unless openly shared, we assume the best and welcome them in to our community. Same could probably be said for any server.
Zikory – Retired Thief
Zikkro – Zergling Necromancer

WRONG
When a bunch of terrible players stack a server so they can win through shear force of numbers, it’s entirely those players’ fault.
I was on JQueue at launch and really enjoyed the community, but when a bunch of bandwagon failures jumped on the server in October, I left and went to Maguuma to find better fights instead of just blobbing everything. I received invitations to join guilds that moved from JQueue to SoR during that period, but it was clear that SoR was being stacked and I wanted to play somewhere that skill mattered more than numbers.
It is entirely the player’s fault that the server population is imbalanced. No one forced you to move to a zerg server. You did it because you are bad and you should feel bad.
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
the reason they win is because they have really huge numbers compared to other and i don’t think that represent actual server capabilities.
one of the reason the badwagon start is because a net promise a prize based on server performance and people are stupid so they expect a pot of gold at the end of rainbow. i believe in the end of rainbow you only got crappy cereals.
i wouldn’t move to gold server even if someone is willing to pay the transfer cost and expenses since i am aware that moving to stacked server do more harm (bloated wvw queue time, lag, and many things) than good(i cant think of anything good here, win wvw match every week?).
my server performance is lame (yeah IOJ you sucks) but i wouldn’t consider moving to another server since my personal performance is rather good (gained over 100 wvw lv since the league started, not bad considering i mostly roam alone).
in the end it’s up to the people, if you want to win every wvw (i would say mob vs tower) match based on some vague information and false sense of pride go to stacked server.
if you want to play smart and improve your in game skills then go to less populated one.
if you want to be a hero, go to server with no population
or you can just swarm the world bosses and be content with it
Its partly everyones fault, especially in NA S1, money was offered, people took it, what can you do?
It’s Anet’s fault. Period. People just play the game like they’re allowed to play it. Only Anet makes the rules.
what can anet do? theyve already raised the prices, but when your 30+ man guild is looking for a win and a server offers you 10k + gold and they take the money and move there, what can anet do? thats player free will as terrible as it sounds, heck, the guild in question isnt even a wvw guild but pve or pvx, throw in PR, Misinformation and ignorance and you have yourself what we have now in certain places.
The circumstances of moving/stacking are also a problem, you and your guild took the money, where else would you go? where can you get the money to transfer off the server, your own server will doubtly take you back and your sitting for hours in Q twidling your thumbs and Pvdooring when you get back
There’s a divide here that’s quite interesting, but ultimately depressing. As far as I can tell, there are a few subcategories of S1’s playerbase.
1- Standard wuv runners are there to play wuv and support their server.
2- Achievement Hunters
3- Loot Hunters
Players in the first category has no effect outside of what they currently do, having fun and being competitive for their chosen server. The second and third categories are disruptive of the event in several ways; taking the category one player spots for personal gain, redirecting supply for their own goals, crowding specific servers to get the most rewards with the least effort (7 weeks is a decently long time, not a strong wuv runner as I used to be, but I managed over a weekend and some random times during the week after). They can be a boon too, if they continue to play in the season and contribute beyond their own gain. It’s a mixed bag of PvE only players, griefers (ignoring orders, causing trouble when you want to catch the enemy unaware etc.) and players who are central around their own entitlements… not to say that doesn’t exist for the regulars.
Overall it creates an imbalance, where it comes down to fighting for rewards than fighting for the overall competitive nature and gaining the bragging rights of a high rank. Not to say rewarding people for the competition isn’t bad, and it’s not just the players either. There needs to be more structure, if you weren’t on the three servers that people transferred to as the season started, yours had a significantly lower chance at claiming victory, due to reduced numbers and coverage, even with excellent commanders leading the charge. Locking people to servers is fine, but I think it should be discreetly done, because hey, they could transfer to the top server when it starts and then head right back down when they’re done and cash in, they won’t have to care about the condition of their own realm, they get the best possible rewards one way or the other, win or lose.
In all honesty, I have little input in how they could of obtained better results for a stronger, more balanced competition, but the way it is now, isn’t healthy. I’d really like Anet to do a discussion of the season, take in the feedback in a singular, collective post and hopefully make changes for the better. In another game I played during the launch of their competitive team based pvp, one specific two-player combination was so strong, it could only be countered by a similar team, and they admittedly left it that way for the duration of a few seasons. If you didn’t play that combination, you had a low chance of getting a high rank. Please, do not let that happen here (in a sense).
Another problem is the meta achievement. I don’t see how a server that doesn’t stand much of a chance in any of the matches, how they could get the achievement.
I swear I’ve read some posts on here saying people switched to winning servers just so they could finish it.
It’s actually harder for the stacked winning server to complete the meta, than it is for the underdogs. Especially, since the underdogs will have a couple slightly more balanced matches, while the winning server will only have blowouts.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
You can be a part of the solution.
When Edge of the Mists comes, refuse to take part in the PPT meta. If your opponent has you severely outnumbered, do not go to any of the borderlands. Make them sit there with their +695 cap with nothing to do. Let them zerg the warg for a week while the two smaller servers enjoy even man fights in the mists.

League was a joke, no one really earned the wins if you won it was because you were already recognized as the favorite and then band wagon ensured you would remain unstoppable.
Apparently, there was actually a poll that was conducted prior to the league which had SF/FC the favorites over HoD and Darkhaven. Look how that ended up. Also, many people held Kaineng to be favorites over HoD. HoD may have gotten some transfers but I’m pretty sure they earned it mostly by themselves.
Further, if you look at the other positions in the league, leagues weren’t a joke. Servers like Sorrow’s Furnace and Darkhaven really DID earn their place (as I’m bronze league that’s all I can speak of). Darkhaven worked day in and day out to improve and make sure that it was ready to beat SF, and it did. Sorrow’s Furnace got stuck in 2 matchups with HoD, and came out of that with some of the fiercest zergs in all of bronze.
I think your perspective is, to be honest, somewhat cynical/jaded (even though, of course, there is some merit, especially when it comes to the winners of the leagues).

and HoD I have no idea what happened.
Look above HoD and you will see NSP and IoJ.
Last time HoD beat NSP was Week 13, back in April.
Last time HoD beat IoJ was in July, NSP won that match, HoD was second. Look at the two matches in September, IoJ beat HoD by150K and 220K.
If Kaineng hadn’t imploded NSP would have won Bronze, most likely undefeated.

Lets not also forget Jade Quarry were favorites to win because of taking in guilds from Blackgate and having an easier schedule. Look how that turned out. Blackgate will be one of six servers that will end the season undefeated. All six servers that went undefeated crushed their competition, and there are only six leagues….

Thought the talk of tanking would be left to the Toronto Raptors and the Houston Texans, but then I get a nice reminder that it can happen in any league.
I think for the next season, they really should have locked in everyone’s position right at the announcement and then start the season shortly after. That way, servers don’t become barren quick enough and integrity is maintained.

S1 was actually pretty good, scoring wise. Coverage did determine the match ups, but it is interesting to see how the standings are gonna be at the end of the season.
SBI was picked to finish 1st, but they will finish 3rd. TC will finish 3rd, while SoR will be 4th.
All the QQ over JQs schedule, and they will finish 2nd.
AR was picked to finish last, and they will be a far cry away from last.
So yes, the season was entertaining, and 3 servers did win easily (well except BGs week 1 win). I thought it was a good season.
Obviously, not being from FA or HoD, I can’t speak for them.
But. BG’s wins weren’t that easy. We were picked to come 3rd at the start of leagues, and were definitely seen as the underdog after losing much of our OCE/SEA coverage to JQ and SoR (though SUPR and RISE moved to greener pastures I heard?)
It’s pretty evident this week that all of BG’s commanders and regular WvWers are completely burnt out from putting their all into winning this season. Outmanned buff is appearing for me more and more often, and more often than not, it’s the particular timezone when SEA starts up that we start gaining a lot of our PPT (we haven’t really seen JQ’s SEA show up in big numbers besides TKG and MERC + militia, only seen FoO once, and SoR’s SEA is basically all militia and.. GC? or GE? I get those two mixed up).
We put all our effort into winning every week, except week 6. Sorry SoS and Mag, coverage/population differences and all…

My guess, when we do season 2, emphasis on when, Henge and Aspenwood will move up 1 bracket. Don’t think any of us on JQ think that BG is un beatable, well ok, maybe a few do, but not everyone.

Granted, yes, on my server we did have at least 2 weeks of matchups where we were able to accomplish something other than being camped at our spawn. However, that also meant having to complete a meta achievement in 1/3 of the intended time frame, which is partially why you see a lot of people complaining about the high values associated with those achievements.

Let’s just ingore the fact that FA tanked to drop down to silver league.
And henge winning all 7 in the lowest bracket of all is honestly not that surprising. They should have won every match by over 200k.

There is a very, VERY long qq thread about JQ’s “easy” schedule, as well as a few “Who do you think will win Season 1?” threads. BG was predicted to come in 3rd or 4th in EVERY one of those threads, almost unanimously. BG beat JQ & SoR the first week without any help from Za Drots at all. I can’t actually find ANYONE saying that BG would win Season 1 any earlier than week 3 of the season, actually. Not one.
To solve the imbalanced population is huge problem. You never ever know the real population at all. Some guilds tempbreak, some guilds disband etc. The population that show in the server panel dont imply their true WvW coverage. We will never get the exact balance. Balance may come at short time, but when one side start to dominate due to their sheer win motivation, the other servers drop then more and more imbalance will come. People always want to stay with the winning side not to mention about the offpeak timezone, they tend to established their own countries communities so it would be hard for them to actually move to a deserted ground where no one is there to fight with them.
In fact, SoR/JQ have some population left. It’s just their result already decided so no motivation to come out everyday, no motivation to do overtime as the faith is already decided. What Anet can do is to give a thought more about the bloodlust buff as well as to the outmanned buff. Bloodlust buff really put the weaker server a much worse environment to fight. Bigger servers always have spare man to roam for bloodlust thus their bigger zerg is even stronger. Now the outmanned buff also nothing but a joke. Anet need to give the weaker server more advantages to give them more motivation to fight.
Hiding score also not a bad idea though as ppl generally give up once they know their victory is gone. Just few tidbits.
Mega Blob meta also another thing that anet should try to get rid off. Rally mechanism is the one key failure. Meaning the one with more numbers will always rally up and will mostlikely take a win on any fight. Putting rally off may mean more about positioning/tactic than just freaking stack on me mega zerg blob.

BG doubleteamed JQ with help from SoR the first week without any help from Za Drots at all.
