Numbers/coverage still > skill
As long as there is a rally function and an AoE cap numbers will always be greater than skill.
Yeah, coverage is always going to be key in WvW. I don’t see this getting addressed in a meaningful way anytime soon simply because i don’t think there are many ways to combat this particular issue. If you have a block of time when your server can’t be on and another server has enough people, they will night/day/whatever cap and get a higher PPT. :/ sad, but true.

What would be interesting is if the point totals were displayed by particular timezone when giving the score. So, for example, the total would still be the same but should show the breakdown of when the points were accumulated throughout the week in each timezone’s “prime time.” So, as a pure example you’d see: TOTAL: 100,000 (US: 84,000, EU: 10,000, SEA: 6,000, etc.)
Not only could this be used as a sense of something to fight for on servers which don’t have around-the-clock coverage (i.e. just trying to focus on beating the other servers in the US bracket on points during the matchup, for example) but could also be used to determine the top US/EU/SEA/Oceanic servers in each bracket and make a league table displaying that too.
This is kind of a random idea off the top of my head, but the goal should be to try and make it worthwhile to compete on servers even if you know you’ll ultimately lose the complete matchup purely and simply because other servers in your match have more numbers during your server’s off-hours.

I know ANet was leaning towards a grouping system (similar to eotm) to place everyone on some degree of an even playing field. I’m pretty sure they’ve changed their minds about that one as most people felt it was impersonal and you had no real connection to winning or losing.
That was a while ago and I haven’t heard much since so were left with, as you say, a win of coverage.
hmm so empty maps > full maps with activity… nice mindset lol
Once more people realize this the better IMO, too many MUs are spoilt by this and makes all this effort to organize during the hours you have numbers futile, especially when you lose structures off peak to bigger numbers.
It doesn’t matter if you have scouts who can spot stuff happening moments before and even siege can be AOE’d down so easily, the defensive side is at usually disadvantage if you’re outnumbered.

What’s happening now is that servers which are winning fights with equal numbers are only losing due to coverage… which is counterintuitive
Why can’t diminishing returns be applied to caps? Make it such that any additional cap over and above your own “corner” is worth less PPT the more caps a server has… that way even if nightcap occurs the gap won’t widen as much, which allows people to catch up when the server is more populated.
There is then incentive to defend and hold the towers giving the most PPTs , and the main reason for taking others’ towers will be to deny them PPT, rather than to rake up a massive PPT lead.
