Obsidian Sanctum Dead
OS and the memories of the “good” ol’ times…
WvW Rank 3800 (Platinum Veteran) – PvP Rank 69 (Shark) – 25,9k Achievment Points

Indeed, they need to make this place interesting to run again!
There was nothing more fun than camping the puzzle or fighting people who were. It was awesome and I miss those days.
Ironically, it’s BECAUSE of players camping the puzzle that Obsidian Sanctum died. The reason is because the kind of player who enjoys doing JP’s every single day is usually not the same kind of person who enjoys PvP (or at least, not at the same time). I love JP’s, and back before EotM was introduced, I used to do OS every single night for the Badges, but I always hated it when there was another hostile player in there, because that meant that my 5 min run could turn into a 30 min slugfest. If they were cheap enough to camp at a spot where it would be almost impossible to dislodge them (at the top of the well, in the dark room, or at the top of the arena, for example), then I’d just go do something else. I have better ways to spend my time than give some camping griefer enjoyment.
When I’m in OS, I’m there to do the JP, not to fight. I enjoy a good fight on occasion, but that’s what the Arena or sPvP is for.
I actually came to the forums to make this exact post! I loved obsidian sanctum back in the day when there was aways 20+ people there dueling and doing the puzzle. what happened? I don’t see why it changed, it’s still a great place to duel. Try to get some people to go there.
I spent many nights engaged in epic brawls inside the OS. Then s1 dropped on us and my favorite rivals were not to be seen again for weeks at a time. Sadly, the grudge match nvr resumed.
My regular friends and foes in the OS is what rly got me hooked on gw2.
the whole wvw not worth to play
Just the WvW
R3200+
increase the loot at the end of the of the JP
OS and other BL JP’s were for PvE players to get easy badges at the time. Once EOTM came out, the ktrain rewards made it obsolete. There’s a fundamental problem of the game competing with itself which creates dead areas. This is largely a management issue since they’re in control of what is worked on and released.
Took a hit when chest turned to once a day per account versus once a day per character. YB mesmers used to port which sometimes brought the enemy to fight…..
OS and the memories of the “good” ol’ times…
Those were my favorite moments, out of EVERYTHING in GW2. I wasn’t the guy behind the siege either, I was the thief who absolutely enjoyed taking down the groups of 5-10 people camping up there. With the use of well timed knockbacks(rip planks), mystic fountains, and clever plans, you could eventually pick them all off, one by one, and then when it was cleared, you would have a plethora of peeps in chat praising your success, only for it to happen again.
Man, I miss that….
Here was a great video my friend made back in those times. It’s hilarious, for those who want to see it

Not me. I love that it was empty when I went. I just wanted to get the JP done. Did not want to bother with a battle too.
it doesn’t look like its dead

GvG =/= OS. It just happens to be using OS arena, but has nothing to do with the JP.

Logical fallacy: “I do not like PvP. I like jumping puzzles. You like jumping puzzles, therefore you must not like PvP.”
I love jumping puzzles, I guess I’m just not an easymode farmer on them, though. I enjoy the challenge of making it through, especially with the added risk of PvP. However, as I said in the OP, I wish they’d add some kind of reward giving sufficient incentive for both the individual players and the overall zerg to run it for personal rewards and some form of WvW bonus/boost.

Logical fallacy: “I do not like PvP. I like jumping puzzles. You like jumping puzzles, therefore you must not like PvP.”
You obviously missed the second part of my post where I also stated that I do enjoy playing PvP (currently rank 42, and I’m also a Bronze Raider in WvW), but I do not like mixing the two. When I’m in Obsidian Sanctum, I’m there because I want to JP, not to PvP. Likewise, when I’m in PvP, I’m there to PvP, not do precise jumps.
Note that I am not advocating that Obsidian Sanctum be changed. I understand perfectly that it was designed for the subset of players who like the added challenge and danger of getting attacked by other players. But this subset of players is quite small compared to the bigger pools of JP’ers and PvP’ers. As a result, Obsidian Sanctum tends to drive away these players; the JP’ers don’t want to be attacked while doing Obsidian Sanctum, and the PvP’ers are more concerned with fair 1v1’s rather than trying to dislodge a player whose build is usually designed especially to take advantage of terrain to get cheap kills in OS. (Why do you think they all go to the Arena or just fight in the lobby instead of fighting in the JP itself?)
Upping the rewards alone will not be a good permanent solution either. The activity itself needs to be fun, or players will just do it once for the experience/AP (or however many times they need to grind the reward they’re after), and then never come back again.
It died because its not part of EB anymore.
People cant be cool and offer free portals and spam it in chat anymore.
Now you go there and you have no clue if someone is portaling or not, so people don’t even bother going there to find out anymore.
As a mesmer, OS jumping puzzle had been and will always be my favorite gamemod of GW2. There are so many things going on and there are so many things you can do! My favorite things are fights at the dungeon arena, fights at spawn, portals to flip the top (double portals with other mesmer), portal trolling own ppl to fall to death, tip for the taxi, spikeroot fruit, planks, mesmer GS-5…. the list goes on and on. Even though the whole JP crowd (who stayed in JP all day long) was bashed badly by “normal” wvw community, those were my best moments in the whole game.
I wish Anet can make OS jumping puzzle like a mini game (can be like EotM, a 4-hour mini game) that encourage equal amount of people to play from all three servers. It will be so fun!
It died because its not part of EB anymore.
That and the fact that rewards are not account bound anymore and made toon bound.
But in all seriousness your right, OS really started to die off once it was taken out of EB. As you said mesmers couldn’t advetise portals and additionally ask for help.
At release I would get into some of the most insane fights in OS. Hiding on my mesmer and avoiding the enemy zerg to portal up are zerg and watch a huge fight break out.
I’ve not seen anything to replicate this sort of spontaneity and intensity ingame ever since.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”

This guy starts off wrong and then finishes right.
Obsidan sanctum was great because it was it was the best source of badges, so you had a constant stream of people. As badges are a WvW resource, the PvE jump puzzle guys don’t have a good complaint.
What happened is first Badges were changed so they dropped anywhere not just from players, then EoTM was introduced with tons of badges rewarded every event.
Meanwhile anet has never introduced additional sinks for badges. I argued at the time that anet ought to increase the WvW exclusive armor skins 10x to keep up with badge inflation, but that didn’t happen and exclusive WvW skins are trivial.
This made OS obsolete.
It’s a potentially a high risk JP, but no reward anymore.
A lot of people (maybe most) don’t like being ganked, or taking long runs back from spawn, or being camped at the spawn, or being pinned down on a 2 ft wide choke point in perma combat, unable to jump, from fire from above. I guess you didn’t realize this.
Only ever went there for the achievements for the first go and the subsequent WvW tournament stuff. Otherwise never touched the place. No reason to.
Most of the time during those sessions other players were doing much of the same thing, so most didn’t really try and harass. Which was rather nice for a long and uneventful JP with negligible reward.
Thankfully, the few times I was jumped I managed to deal with the assaulters, but it was not something I enjoyed when trying to focus.
Obsidian Sanctum imo is dead because it serves no other purpose than for a few gankers to get in their fun trolling to frustrate others. It doesn’t benefit WvW in any way.
If it had an actual purpose / reward and more people actually using it, might actually be something people go for besides a checklist.

If you dont like people doing PvP maybe you should try some PVE JP, OS is the place where trolls gather and plot to conquer the world

I’m a Tiger so far in PvP and rank 178 in WvW, I do PvP.
However, OS has no real point to it besides being a place to troll.
If I wanted to duel, I’ll go to an Arena, if I wanted a full scale fight, I’ll actually play WvW.
There is no purpose to OS even from a PvP standpoint other than to be a legal grief. That’s only enjoyable for said griefers.

That has been brought up so many times and I don’t think we’ve seen an official note on if it would be possible or not so I’ve got to assume it is not within the realm of easy things for anet to do. Bummer tho, would have an added GvG outside of match-up draw that way as well. The final chest could use a bump in rewards for sure but it would be nice to hear from the devs on their thoughts for the place at this point.

It’s just a jumping puzzle place where people can kill if they want. You have memories of it not being dead. Bring them back and socialize with people.
