Open World Dueling
Yes. Has been asked for numerous times and a dozen people will chime in here about how bad it is that they have to turn off duel requests.
This is one of the biggest design holes for an MMO with heavy PvP attributes.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
I think there is no dueling because the game isn’t balanced for 1v1… Juz sayin…
WvW Rank 3800 (Platinum Veteran) – PvP Rank 69 (Shark) – 25,9k Achievment Points

So here’s the thing, you have created a new build for WvW and want to test it out. What do you do? You go out and scout around for people looking for small fights hoping to not get zerged. Or if you are lucky, you find another person alone out in one of the maps, initiate a 1v1 fight and once again hope no one else joins in.
Or you go to OS, and find someone to duel.
OS is okay, but I would love to be able to duel my friend that I play with regularly. Can’t do that in OS. OS is better than nothing I suppose, but that’s about all I can say about it.
I really have no clue why this hasn’t been added yet. The terrible arguments against it are “I’m afraid of PVP and I don’t want people sending me duel requests” and also “game isn’t balanced around 1v1s so dueling shouldn’t be put in.”
Both of these are lame. Just include an option for those who are afraid of it to ignore all requests. The latter argument is stupid too because a huge amount of the posts in the profession forums are about beating other classes in a fight. If we could duel our friends it would be so much easier to learn how to deal with various builds and professions. Dueling happens anyways (either in PVP or WvW) so there’s no reason why a QOL change can’t be done to make this easier.
Oh, one more argument against it is “I’m a PVEr and I would hate to see people fighting in Lion’s Arch!” but it’s funny because these PVE players are the first to use their Halloween tonic and fill LA completely with costume brawlers.

Trust me man, a lot of people ask for this all the time.
There are 2 main “problems” (very dumb IMO):
1.- PVE people that likes only kill mobs doens’t want to get any invitation for dueling, because they have to reject it and they will look coward.
Solution: Autodecline option
2.- Anet still say that they already have a duel system (or something alike) with the custom arenas.
Solution: Make Instances like this arenas where we can use our WvW equipment and foods.
I use to thing they do not want to implement duels because they sell for gems SPVP custom arenas, and they will lose money.
But trust me . . . they don’t get much profit for them since SPVP is very angry with this company and they don’t buy many of this custom arenas.
This are the conclusion in my personal opinion after seeing and discussing in some of the main threads of this issue.
Sorry for my bad English, i try my best.
@OP:
This should not be a feature within WvW. We don’t need people taking up queue places for this. Instead, if someone wants to test a build, they can:
1. Go to OS and duel someone
2. Go to PvP and choose a 1v1 custom arena
I do not intend it to be a feature for wvw, rather, used for the PvE areas. I cross posted the thread so that you WvW guys could share your opinion on if you would like to see this feature, as it enables you to test your wvw builds against people of the same server/friends/guildies/etc
Oh look, this again, tonight.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Still-no-Dueling-1
A large number of players are going to be vocal against this because you are still saying “dueling in PvE”. Just can it. We will fight that all that way to the very bitter end. We don’t want dueling in the PvE maps.
Now then, if what you really want is private rooms for dueling, in WvW? I and many others would support that.

But you’re perfectly fine with costume brawlers filling every part of LA with their stupid sound effects?
Makes sense.

Excuse me? I have Hyperacusis. My audio is always off.
“Dueling” someone (even if limited to your friend list), with the duel ending at being downed (or sooner, being possible to “give up”, all friendly mode), would be useful: to learn your class better, facing other classes too, test builds and so on. (Not for boasting, that’s for competitive PvP)
We could even have our most skilled players teach new players and help a lot in raising skill level for everyone. Nothing hostile, just like between a master and student – or duelists sharing, like in Martial Arts schools or other medieval trainers (sword mastery, archery, …)
Have to avoid making this a tool for harrasing others on PvE maps. Limited to friends list it’s fine, since you can remove that player from that list if needed.
Not having it at all feels like the game is missing something important – leveling to 80 means not much. A few hours of lessons from a good player in that class would teach you far more. Just keep it optional, so everyone can relax.

Optional dueling? Never! I demand mandatory dueling! Also the ability to force people into duels even if they don’t want to!
…..is what a lot of people against dueling seem to imagine pro-dueling people want.
If pve folks don’t like dueling, why not make it easy and have dueling option available only in OS. It’s not part of pve and it doesn’t affect WvW queues.
What I’d like to see is OS having dueling option so I can fight with people from same server AND the option to fight people from other servers than those in our matchup. Something like to have a list of few OS instances, which would be same for all servers and I could chose which one I want to join.
I think there is no dueling because the game isn’t balanced for 1v1… Juz sayin…
This is wrong. It is not because the game isn’t balanced for 1v1, it is simply because Anet can’t do kitten about it because if they did, it’ll ruin some of the original codes created by the previous devs. There is a reason why there is no trade option, just mail if you intend to trade stuff with your buddies.

As some one who wants dueling I can give you a reason. Interfering with De’s. There are probably more. My point is that just because you want something don’t blind yourself to the problems with it.

Missed the point/don’t understand the problem.
1. Cannot duel players on your own server so friends/guild mates cannot duel
2. sPvP builds are WAY different than WvW builds. If the arenas allowed for WvW gear and food, then this would work but they currently do not.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
“If the arenas allowed for WvW gear and food, then this would work but they currently do not.”
Then lets work on this, rather than open world dueling on the PvE maps.
Many of the “no dueling” crowd would support this, because as we’ve often said, our only objection to dueling is the “open world” part.
I agree with the OP, but i believe that there might be other problems associated with this.
However, would still be happy to put up with the very minor issues this would cause in the open world, just to duel people on the fly.

That would be the least they could do. Open world dueling is a better option. Those that oppose it have almost no grounds to complain. It doesn’t effect them unless they want it to so why object? Let players play the game the way they want so long as it doesn’t interfere with your game play.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
wvw will never be balance with all the foods and stuffs depending on pve.
spvp is way better place
I don’t see why people are against dueling in the open world? Did a duel cost you your wife? Did the duel touch you? Is two people dueling directly affecting you? Are you offended that a duel is taking place?
If anything, dueling is a great RP element.

Those of us who object to open world dueling do so based on past experience from many other games where the dueling crowd always becomes a toxic element in the community. We don’t want that here.
I fully support dueling. We have current options, sPvP and WvW. I duel in both of those styles and don’t think that more is needed. If you truly want to duel “against friends” with PvE gear, what’s needed is “WvW rooms”, not open world dueling.
Being someone that as someone who spends most of their time in WvW, seeing/having participated in the impromptu dueling that happens there quite regularly there (if you know where to look), I think this would be a boon for a couple reasons:
1. The most noticeable right now is look at the WvW reaction to Acc bound wxp. Overwhelming support. The WvWers would be the one to appreciate this change most and we are the ones who buy our gems (obviously I do not speak for everyone here) to get the items off the gem store we desire because we just dont want to spend our time in PvE.
2. This was mentioned in a earlier post, but it would be a great quality of life change to be able to strike up a duel with guildies (or even randoms) when waiting on X to start/move out etc. Also as a personal point of view on this, I know I would love to be able to fight members of my guild to test builds, practice 1v1, maybe have an informal tourney, and generally I think it would be fun.
3. For those concerned with dueling in the middle of a PvE area; I know this is by no means a blanket statement, but knowing the mind of someone who likes to duel, most of the the duels would happen off in an area with relative seclusion to avoid interruptions. I reiterate: this would not be all but I do think that the bulk of open world duels would happen without the PvE population ever even knowing about it.
4. I really thought this would be obvious, but no offense to the dev who commented earlier, spvp and wvw are two separate entities. Yes there are some who run almost identical builds in both, but a lot of us who like to build and tweak till we get the numbers just right to how we play will only ever get similar builds in spvp (and I mean how a cat is similar to and elephant because they both have 4 legs and a tail). To be able to 1v1 in out fully kitted out wvw builds against other combat ready wvw builds to see how they perform in combat is something this game sorely needs.
In summary:
- helps keep wvw population happy
- promote guild unity and interaction
- introduce new people to pvp in a controlled environment
- PvE players need fear not
- fantastic quality of life addition

I’m older than most gamers. I’ll be 50 on my next birthday. I’ve likely forgotten more gaming titles than you’ve played. I don’t want to go back to any of them that had open world dueling. I was a sailor too, and I can be eloquently rude when I want to be.
The problem with dueling in the open world is the “won’t take no for an answer” crowd. These are the same people who post in these forums.
There, I said that politely. No need to be rude, but don’t tempt me.
Anet has messed up a lot of things in this game, but they’ve done plenty of things right too. No dueling in the open world is one of them. You aren’t disadvantaged at all by that because dueling still exists. It may not be exactly the format that you want, but it’s there, and I take advantage of it too.
As I’ve said before, I fully support dueling, but not in open world PvE. It doesn’t belong there.

This has been addressed in several games already. There is a “Do not Disturb” option for duels in most games that offer them. Players can set their own preference and if they choose will never get a duel request.
BTW I still haven’t heard of a previous game where duels created a toxic environment. I also have not heard of a real reason why open world duels shouldn’t be allowed aside from the easily managed duel requests.

I am not that far behind you and I was playing MuDs long before graphical MMOs. It is unlikely someone has forgotten more games than I have played. Quite the opposite in most cases being that my first computer was a TRS-80. I have also been writing software since the early 80s and still do today. I even have a spell named after me in a somewhat popular MMO for its time that is still around today.

In my experience, it doesn’t work. Map chat gets toxic when no one wants to duel. Everyone is a carebear, and it goes downhill from there. The fact that so many people here are willing to speak up against open world dueling is testament to this.
Clever of you though, to post this thread in the WvW forum, rather than the regular GW2 discussion forum. You aren’t getting the usual critique precisely because most of the people who don’t want open world dueling don’t play WvW either, and they aren’t reading the WvW forum.
This thread should probably be moved to the GW2 discussion forum.

2 or 3 dissenters is not a testament. Also having played a half dozen MMOs with dueling, I have not seen any indication that map chat becomes toxic. I was hoping you would cite an example.

I am not the OP but I do support the premise. I would like the ability to duel my friends and others with standard gear. I would particularly like this to happen without needing to spend gems to do so unlike the current arenas.
There is a reason why there is no trade option, just mail if you intend to trade stuff with your buddies.
The elimination of the direct trade option was likely to make it easier to track gold and item sellers as well as cut down on hacking. It also forced players into using the gold sink TP.

Yes, this needs to be implemented. Put in a feature to request a duel that the other person has to accept, similar to guild invitations.
Or simply an item, like the costume brawl and belcher’s bluff. Use an item – spawn a duel activity that others can join.
Doesn’t interfere with anything PvEwise. Carebears can carebear in their own care corners.
I fully support this, those carebear happy go life pve players can simply auto ignore the map chat/duel invite if they wish to.

“Duel” option and it’s consequences can be viewed differently by each of us, and we have different expectations. State your position, bring arguments, and allow others to do the same. Neither of us decides on this.
I for example view “Duel” option on PvE maps as “Skill Lesson” – not as skillful killing or PvP. It’s not a duel then. Not a fight until one is defeated one. I’m against harrasing others. This happens in SWTOR too: many times a higher level player invited me to “duel”. No comment. Then used emotes to… express whatever emptiness lies within that brain. But this can happen in GW2 too, insulting players are among us, this planet is infected by many […]
WvW map is not the answer either. I never duel in WvW, because I want to spend every second in helping my realm. Don’t have time for those poor chasers, wanting to duel. But I feel for them… since they are lost in this game. A bit. Still, I consider myself a “duelist” (on mesmer and thief only), but I do that only when an objective have to be taken or defended or somebody stopped from contesting a keep. Can be 1v1, or 1vX, doesn’t matter. I may win or not, doesn’t matter, just doing the uttermost possible under any circumstances. I would feel very guilty to take up space on WvW map and “duel” just to have fun (obviously feeling guilty it’s not fun). That’s why that kind of “duels” should be moved to a game mode aimed for that.
sPvP it’s different game, no comment on that. Playing two different games it’s confusing; whatever learned in one game mode, may not apply to the other. Then I don’t like to spend time for my own “achievements”, I play just for my own team. Even scouting in a tower, refreshing siege, escorting dolyaks… anything feels more rewarding, then just chasing for my own “fun” (obviously it’s not fun to me).
But others feel differently. They can duel and do whatever else, called “roaming” sometimes. Or duel in Obsidian Sanctum, including GvG – just for the sake of “PvP” or whatever (they know better why). It’s important to still respect each other, let others have a game mode where they can have fun. Without calling them “bad”. Options are good. If a game don’t have a game mode you like, offering options you like – then you can ask for them politely, and do something else until then. Insults are not good and never help.
