Open World Free for All Server?
If you are talking about instances that are specifically for PvP, sure. If you are talking about adding PvP to the existing PvE instances, absolutely not.
No I’m talking about a separate PvP oriented mega server, call it “Abaddon’s Eyebrows” or whatever. The PvE maps on the current servers have nothing to do with it.
I’d love to have the chance to PvP in PvE maps. Non stop trolling

I’d like it. personally, I’d like to be able to join different mega-server instances (think maplestory when you first log in) and having 1 or more of these dedicated to ffa pvp.
I believe one of the more popular gw2 youtubers was granted the ability for open world pvp? (I’m not familiar with gw2 on youtube or twitch) if that is true then that means it’s already potentially available to be activated

Ah, the thrill of being in open world with full adamantium armor and weapons, knowing that you would lose it all if someone killed you.
The map would be full for the first 2-3 weeks until people finally start to realize what open world pvp actually means. Then it would be a steady decline in population until the server becomes a ghost town.

FFA servers in PvE centric games usually end up being a bad business investment.
They tend to self-implode as a small set of players harass enough new players coming in that the players stop coming in, the old ones get bored without fresh meat, and then population declines. (example: see: DAoC and the death of Mordred and Andred servers.)
And yes, alas, the days of losing your gear when killed are long over. As are bounty hunting other players.

I do not understand why Anet has not implemented such a server where you can PvP anywhere except for main cities. DAoC had modred so its a workable concept.
Im guessing the reason they havent done so is anyones guess

It might work if the pve world had a shadow pvp world, but the pvp map was limited to 1 or 2 zones. Then the next day (or week) anew set of maps are opened, and the previous are closed. Even with a pvp megaserver, I agree not enough people to cover all the maps at the same time……
Almost all old school MMOs were either outright PvP or had a PvP server. Certainly would get my vote.
Not sure the modern MMO player would be interested. Seems most MMO players want to be spoon fed quests and avoid anything with a death penalty.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
Assuming something like that was tried.
Eventually an ever growing mob of uplevel gankers will begin spawn camping the newb area. Eschewing a fair fight in upper level zones. They prey upon new players coming in. Denying them even half a chance to level enough to offer a remotely fair fight.
Less and less people will try the playstyle as word spreads….all the while, these erstwhile pvp’ers will be whining about how (insert game company name) has ruined the server/playstyle by not doing this or that…but in reality, they actually ruined it themselves.

When this happens we must go to the starter area and level by killing boars. If after leveling we fail, we will acquire the Sword of a Thousand Truths.

Really wish they would add this! It would keep me interested as it was my favorite thing to do in SWTOR and Rift.
I kinda think it shoulda been implemented since launch.. this game has tons of gorgeous empty pve maps What a waste
If they dont which we already most likely know? I will be off to play the next game that has my favorite pvp mode .. oh wait Im already playing Archege guess I found 1.. bye bye soon gw2 pve maps that had such potential
The thing is, even when there are known gankers, there often people skilled enough and willing to kill them and protect “lowbies”(most likely for a reward or because they remember getting ganked). It creates a kind of ecosystem. However, the current implementation of stealth (+ initiative system) could prove to be even more problematic than on the WvWvW maps. So that’s also something to consider.
@ Raf
Everything you said happens in WvWvW already. There are known gank squads, 1-2 people will get chased down by 8-9. They hang outside keeps, they kill uplevls, they emote spam, they corpse jump, they throw shame rams. Yet people still log in to look for fights in WvWvW. I suspect other major problems are whats driving people away from WvWvW.

You bring up a good point. There may not be enough PvP centric players left in GW2 to fill these maps(even if NA/EU were combined?Hmmm). And I get the feeling PvE players would squeal if a few of the maps were rotated each week to allow PvP.
Actually this would be really cool, particularly if Anet charges a fortune to move there, and then charge an even bigger fortune to leave that server. That way we can get all the PvP wannabe posers into one place where they can take turns admiring each other, flexing, and taking selfies.
Unfortunately they’ll all come back to the forum complaining that their server is dead.
I would love to see a server support open world PvP in any area of the game, only downside. I can see LOTS of high mobility warriors just running from fights all day until they find non 80’s
DragonBrand
Dawn Of The Sacred Knights [DAWN]
They could make only lvl 80 areas available to prevent killing lowbies and to actually fill the maps. Not sure if there are enough pvp oriented players even with megaserver system.
Personally I’d like a new lvl 80 map for pvp. There isn’t much to do on regular lvl 80 maps except for events that require a huge number of people. Imagine trying to kill any of the bosses in Orr temple events in pvp mode.
New map could have objectives/events that could be done by a single person or very small group of people. Up to five people could party up (that would prevent them from dealing dmg to each other). I think if the max size was limited to party size, that would prevent people from zerging over smaller groups/individuals. Events/objectives would give players a reason to go to particual places. Just like in wvw, many fights happen over taking a camp/tower or when moving from one objective to another.

Your pvp frustration left some deep scars on your logic.
I do not think PvP should be open world in a game designed only to have PvE in the open world. If it had been created with PvP in mind from the start, fine, that’ll work. But not now.
However…
Imagine an all-zone event. Lets say that a gigantic tree tentacle reach into the sky in Orr and pull down one of Zhaitans dragons that Mordremoth want to consume, whatever. The scenario can be anything.
When this happen, everyone in the zone will see the cinematic, then they’ll get kicked out because the zone is “contested” and have to enter it again or alternativly reset to a spawn location based on their color.
A player will be placed on one of three teams with appropriate costume changes per race/gender/etc – Blue become Pact, Green become Mordremoth minons and Red become Zhaitans minions. Standard three-way fight using the same mechanics as EoTM. The costume would be visual only and wont affect skills or weaponry, in order to maintain the exact same PvP as normal WvW. Might require some new textures, but should be doable within player visual parameters.
Each team has score, which is built up by performing specific objectives on the map.
Event last maybe 60 minutes, ending cinematic plays, everyone is kicked out of the zone, everyone get a little loot depending on participation or if their team won, etc. Zone is back to “normal” (maybe some visual change to indicate who won the last time). Then after a certain amount of time, the event repeats. I’d say roughly a day between events, want to make it at least a little special.
We already know that GW2 is technically capable of doing this since they did something similar in the beta (Shatterers corruption of Plains of Ashford causing players to fight each other as corrupted or heroes).

A PvP mega server would breathe new life into the game for me.Though there would have to be factions or it would be sheer chaos.
this wud be great for the game
Do something like champ spawns from Ultima online. Those reinvigorated a dying pvp community for quite some time, also gave PvE players a reason to need pvpers. As it currently is its most likely a pvp player gets stuck doing pve for certain items.
Basic idea is there were multiple champion bosses that dropped power scrolls most of them took a few people to kill them although a few were able to be solo’d. A group of people would have to go into a certain dungeon we would just use some sort of large instance or an existing dungeon or any of the pve maps. You would have to kill mobs to level up the spawn. Eventually the champ pops up and you kill it for what we’re power scrolls in UO, here I would assume we would use some sort of equivalent or ascended ingredients or drops or higher chance for precursors or whatever figure it out. But the real fun is how the loot would work in the pvp zone. Any of the loot obtained in the p p zone for this current instance will he loot able, including the new shiniez you get from this boss, also this style of pvp will not allow people just to run indefinitely as you will lose the champ.
This couldn’t be some sort of wvw thing so I’m not sure how they would do the teams or targeting or whatever.
Really the biggest issue I see in doing this with this game is the AoE cap. In UO a group of highly skilled players could mow down zergs due to lack of aoe cap. Was very common to have groups of 10 beating 40. ViP! SX HaX !C!

This feature would have been very nice, cause it would allow you to play with all of your friends on different servers.
Yes. Pvp in the normal Pve maps all the way.
I’ve been playing LineageII for the longest times myself now. The pvp system of that game is brilliant in so many ways.
The only problem that would need to get addressed first is pk’ing low-level guys.
Thats no fun and ruins the game, much like rifting ruined AION even though the concept of it was awesome.
nice ideas… make pvp maps with mvp monster (so no low level to be bullied much)
so player get to that map to get rare items from monster but also the risk to be killed

Modred is exactly the reason they won’t do it. DAOC created their FFA server, population flocked to it enough they opened a second FFA server. In a very very short time both servers population declined to nothing when everyone realized it was nothing more then level 50’s ganking new players etc. Complete waste of resource.
Doubt it would happen in the first place.
The whole PvE game is based around cooperation, doing events where anyone can jump in to help or go away at any time, large groups doing world bosses, things like that. Making a server compatible with open world PvE would mean a LOT of work in adapting the events, level scaling and so on. Just doing a world boss would be impossible using that ruleset.
Not to mention that the way I see it would probably end up being whoever gets there first will just camp the WP or portals to an area and everyone else just die before they finish loading.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
I would enjoy it. Infact make all PvE like this and let’s slaughter all those high skilled PvE guilds who believe high speed dungeon runs require skill.

Ah, the thrill of being in open world with full adamantium armor and weapons, knowing that you would lose it all if someone killed you.
Apparently most people ’couldn’t handle’ it back then either. I started playing UO shortly after they created Trammel (the non-PvP map) and started new players there and the most common piece of advice I was given was to never, ever, under any circumstances switch over to the PvP version.
I got curious and tried it a few times but it was a ghost town. Even in cities I struggled to find anyone on that map. And I was mainly playing on Lake Superior, which was a very highly populated server.

Griefing not PKing was why most players stuck to trammel

Flagging yourself for PvP similarly to Lineage II was what I had it mind and not a situation where you could accidentaly AoE someome to death during a boss fight. I would be like the PvE maps with the option to PvP.
Aion’s rifting system was great. At the time when I left, what ruined rifting was the 80 percent defense boost against rifters because people complained about being killed by geared characters their level(instead of banding together or calling one of those bored level capped players who patrol lower level zones). It pretty much guaranteed safe PvE and untouched bots on most maps. But quests still sent unsuspecting levelers through rifts to kill enemies. I don’t know what they were thinking.
Not holding out hope for any worthwhile GW2 PvP development outside of sPvP, which I don’t play. And at this point, I don’t think there are enough PvP focused players still interested in GW2 to support such a mode.
Too care bear
You drop AoE you run the risk of killing friends or flagging criminal.
Perfect risk vs reward imho
