Opinion on Guardian frontline build
That’s pretty much the standard tank guard build.
If you’re bored of it, try using a shouts/altruism or meditations build. shouts offer more cleanses/support and the meditations will offer a bit more dps for front line. Both have lower toughness but stay alive via the additional healing they can do.
Personally I think for a frontline build you lack the “supportive” skillz a guardian could potentially bring to the fight, the hammer GS guardian is good control but works better for small roaming groups and not frontline zergs…
That link is what you’ll find a lot of guards use in pug zergs….
Quick points:
-The hydromancy sigil in hammer is handy as hydromancy chills, does damage and is also a blast finisher on weapon swap… (so use purging flames before swapping to hammer for extra might blast)
- The clerics gear on just armor should be enough for a full health heal from your staff might when using Altruistic healing
- High uptime on stability (very important especially if you’re frontline with the driver)
A lot of people will have different builds to what works for them so you will have to work out a build that works for you aswell, what I posted I feel is just a standard meta of what guards should be using in pugzergs

Thank you for the response. I actually haven’t been using hammer at all but that was in the build link. I have been using GS/Staff. I might give altruistic healing a shot and maybe adjust some trait points. I suppose the important thing is to remain flexible and I’ve really been trying to adhere to the build link I posted.
I may also find myself switching out some armor pieces to clerics at some point in the future. However, I recently just crafted a full set of knights gear and somewhat dread the whole ascended time gated crafting process.
Thank you to everyone who posted a response to my topic. It’s given me a lot of insight towards adjusting/tweaking my build here and there. If anyone else has anything to add, feel free to do so.
you have too much armor, the correct amount of armor for a frontline guard is 3100-3200, with 17-18k health.
we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.
In my honest opinion, that build seems too focused on the stats (mainly having a ton of armor in this case) and should be much more orientated around support for and synergy between other players. I’ll try to give a quick run through my thoughts on each part:
Most of the stats in general aren’t too bad, with the exception of the armor, which is way too high. Normally, most frontline Guardians run about 3-3.2k armor and anything above this is usually just a waste.
The traits seem to be a major problem, although it does depend on what Tier your server is (which determines the size of the enemy groups), a standard build for a lot of front liners at the moment is the 00644. The only other option I would see would be 00662, but I’m not a fan of this one since I prefer to have the extra stability from Indomitable Courage. While there are a few other variations of traits that work, they are usually for the more experienced guilds in GvGs.
Check the traits on this build out: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQJAWRlsApVo1CxZI8DNRCRl5MEgY+BP31BwFcAA-TFSGABAcJAQSJ2UKBHS5Rgq/gy+DG8EAKTXQAAEgbezs5NDc0je0je0j2Nv5Nv5NvZpAYSYE-w
This probably isn’t the full Meta right now, but something I just threw together quickly to give a rough indication as to how traits and stats should be. The weapons could be swapped out between Hammer, GS and Staff depending on the situation/group composition. Altruistic Healing is usually a big part of how a lot of us survive and sustain the enemy bomb. So be sure to make good use of it.
The weapon sigils could use a little work. Energy sigils work wonders, especially if on both weapons. The Melandru runes aren’t too bad, the other alternative is to use Hoelbrak as used in the build I linked above.
On another note, if you are going to change your build to something less tanky, then I would advise doing it in smaller steps of 100 armor or so. This should give you time to adjust your skill level to the new stats.
If you want me to run through the meta, or show you the thoughts behind each decision on it then PM me or message me in-game.
