Hello all! With EotM coming out tomorrow and the possibility of new folks coming into WvW, I thought it would be a good time to compile a list of less commonly offered tips for new players. These would be the little things that aren’t immediately obvious to newcomers, so not just “follow your commanders” or “stand in the circle to cap”. If the thread grows sufficiently large, I’ll try to compile a list in this post.

To start, two of mine:

1. Not sure where to spend your WvW rank points? Perhaps the most generally useful is the supply mastery line. Get it up to rank 4, as at that point you will occasionally get free supply back when spending it, which can make a large difference for a supply strapped force.

2. Sitting on a trebuchet or a catapult and not sure where to aim? If you can (and not otherwise directed by a commander) try to hit a spot that will damage multiple walls with one shot. The enemy will have to spend more supply to repair the damage, making it both easier to wear the walls down through attrition and deny them useful supply for other tasks.

3. If you see single enemy bowing to you, he’s probably looking to find a 1v1 fight! Whether or not you accept of course is up to you, feel free to kill him to your hearts content, but I have had several people ask why a single enemy would run up to a group of 10 or more people bowing

4. If you find yourself falling off the world frequently, you may want to slot a stability skill.

5. I think getting to Applied Fortitude is the best use of WvW levels and the first place a player should focus. There are some rare exceptions but IMO make a direct line to that ability. Applied Strength is my recommended second line.

6. Food and other Consumables… figure out what is best for your class/build and use it. If you need something cheap, Mango Pies work for almost every build and are dirt cheap.

7. Traveller runes make you move faster in Seige Golem , you can dodge inside a golem to get a bit of speed boost (Rune of Speed also does the same thing)

8. Every keep and tower you go in or through try to spot the siege. Press F to man it just for a second te refresh the counter back to an hour.

9. Your nametag is roughly 3-4x as wide as your character so no, you’re not hiding behind a tree. Or a rock. Or well. Or a house.

10. If a friendly keep is contested, and you aren’t doing anything terribly important at the time, equip a greatsword and sword/warhorn, and high tail it to that keep. You’re the fastest class in the game, and you have the ability to provide intel, or stay alive long enough to banner the keep lord if the worst happens. Make sure to use any arrow carts or trebs to try and destroy their rams if you can. It is your duty as young, healthy, overpowered warrior to either buy enough time to save the keep, or die with the circle up and your banner on recharge.

Protip 2.0

For best results in this endeavor, wait until the inner gate is down, hide in the back of the lord’s room until he dies. Make sure you’ve equip Dolyak Signet, Endure Pain, and Berserker Stance. Use them in reverse order, with your stability being popped as you cast banner to avoid rupts. Die laughing as your zerg shows up, wipes the interlopers, and rezzes you to many bags (it should be implied you used gs 3 to get in the middle of the circle, simultaneously tagging everyone and avoiding damages,) or waypoint with solumn joy, knowing you caused the enemy blob a few seconds of trouble.

11. your professions Fall Trait is worth equipping as it helps moving around that map quicker and jump of walls when attacking enemy’s at the gate.

12. If you are the first guy dead every time we run into the enemy you need to change your build

13. If you are dead and there is any question about who will win the fight respawn and get your tail back into the fight.

For a player that fight a lot, yep, but otherwise, I find it better to take some sieging abilities, depending on what is needed on your server. Bubble over cata, protection on ram, poison that eats supply on trebs, incresed damage on all siege… In many situations, these ups are more beneficial for the group than the buffs…

Generally speaking rally bots are bad for a server and everyone has to fight eventually so I would still suggest avoiding siege skills unless a player has zero interest in fighting in any solo, skirmish or group capacity.

Get in voice communication software that your server uses to help learn from other players.

It’s typically easy to start off by getting in a zerg because it takes minimal skill. You just need to follow the commander tag. The more defense you have, like Power Toughness Vitality armor or Condition Toughness Vitality, the easier it is to survive (doesn’t punish you as much for your mistakes) so you are more likely to get rewards.

After capturing a structure, you want to drain supply from it if it’s not a structure your server wants to hold. These structures are more commonly any structure in an enemy borderlands or a structure on the enemies side of the map in EBG. Do not drain supply from an upgrading structure unless there’s an emergency. Supply camps are typically better to take supply from than towers. Keep is fine if your keep is fully upgraded and getting fast supply.

Do some roaming to balance out your zerg play and get a feel for small scale vs large scale contribution. Group play is fine, solo is ok if you just want to learn your way around. As you get more experienced, solo roaming will become much more effective.

Do not buy upgrades for structures or place siege unless you know what you are doing. Try to look at where commanders are placing siege to learn good siege placement. Also, try to observe the commanders and others use siege before you hop on it.

An actual tip, as opposed to these other ones: you can get small amounts of supply from killing supply dolyaks on rare occasions.

Try not to get in combat en route to your destination. And, avoid attacking the gate in a large group, unless really necessary, like 1 minute to cap before tick. Popping orange swords reveals your force’s position on the map. So, leave the money wurm, grouchy harpy, fatty grub et cetera alone mmkay?

An actual tip, as opposed to these other ones: you can get small amounts of supply from killing supply dolyaks on rare occasions.

Pro Version: Share the Dolly-Kill with as many people from your zerg as possible, everyone may get those +5 sups dropped and the commander prefers to get 10 time 5 instead of 1 times 5.

For Golem-Driver:
- Don’t jump down from walls, cliffs, etc. your Golem get irreparable damage.
- Only enter a Golem, if you are in the voice-channel
- Be a lvl 80 and a warrior or guardian or tank-necro to be a Golem-Driver (armor and life of the Golem is influenced by the player-stats.)
- Stay together and use the mesmer-portals organized for you.
- An Omega does not need to stand at the door especially not below Oil, it has range attacks.
- Golems should organize the use of their range-defense dome

Solo-Camp capping on EB: If you find a camp guarded by hylaks, dredges or ogres, it can be faster and saver to neutralize the hylaks, dredges or ogres settlement first before attacking the supply camp. If you turn them to your side: Enjoy capping the camp together with them.

On Dead: If you hit many enemies before dead: Decide very fast if your side wins or not. Wait for revive and collect the bags around you if you win, BUT if you think your side will loose go back to spawn asap, your bags will spawn where you are, i.e. lost around your dead body or useful around yourself alive at spawn.

Is the refresh siege a good one?

Every keep and tower you go in or through try to spot the siege. Press F to man it just for a second te refresh the counter back to an hour.

If you start tapping siege try to tap all siege in this fortification. Nothing loses more siege than very different despawn-timer within a fortification.

Deploying arrow carts from the ground up to the wall is a great way to get them as far back as possible.

Deploying rams at the edges of doors often gives a ram user better protection and in some cases allows rams to be used on both inner and outer gates.

Siege can damage water gates and there are several places in WvW to take advantage of that placement namely Bay and Valley Keeps.

When golems are being ported and you are not in one, DO NOT take the portal until the golems have ported. Portals have player limits and going before golems can potentially block a slow moving golem.

When in an Alpha Golem, only use the base 1 attack on a door.

Some skills like Meteor Shower do not show red circles and can straight up murder a person if they aren’t paying attention.

Thief has a lot of use for theirs since it is a free blind/stealth and easy to trigger. Ranger often picks it up because not a lot of great traits beating down the door.

Rangers shouldn’t be taken into large-scale WvW, so there’s that one covered. I’m not super familiar with Thief raiding builds, but I’ve never seen a large-scale-focused thief run that trait. Only roamers.
