Armor damage happens anytime you take damage. So, if you’re getting beat up a bit, you’ll see some wear and tear.
The outmanned buff removes armor damage on death. When you die, a random piece of armor is automatically damaged (instead of incrementally like being hit does). This drastically reduces repair costs, though some will still be incurred.

Armor damage ONLY happens on death in GW2. In other games (WoW) simply engaging in combat would damage your armor. In GW2, this is not the case. Combat in general does not damage your armor.
If the OP is correct, then the outmanned buff is not preventing damage when dying. However, it’s possible that the map is riding the line between outmanned and not. A single player coming and going can cause this. Chances are they weren’t outmanned for a moment.
its not broken as you see it, its just 2 servers can’t have the outmanned buff at the same time. so if the dominating server outnumbers your server by 6 to 1 and the server lower than you by 10 to 1 if the other server has even 1 person on that map your server won’t get it even though the winning server has 10x as many people than both of the losing servers.
its not broken as it can just be abused by trolls.

Ah, I could have sworn armor takes damage while being. The Wiki is somewhat ambiguous in that it doesn’t comment on damage from combat either way, so I’ve edited my post in light of not spreading misinformation.

This I can confirm is incorrect. I have definitely seen two servers be outmanned. Odds are there are at least one or two players from each server on each map, it’s just rare to see them both outmanned because being “greatly outnumbered” requires one server to have huge numbers and then other two to only have a few. When one server has huge numbers, it’s usually because they are being attacked.

I havent taken particular note, since I dont pay attention to the cost much, but as far as I remember, when outmanned, you still receive armor damage. The only difference is that when you go to repair it, it should not cost anything.
The damage when you are outmanned is like the damage from fall damage from a high cliff. You get downed and die but you take no damage. You just get the downed penalty is all.
The information stating you have to go to the repair npc or you take damage just fighting is incorrect.
You most likely were very close to the number of players that is “outmanned” vs not. I’ve seen this happen many times where it says you’re are outmanned, but one or more happen to log in just as you die and you weren’t outmanned anymore. Sometimes the outmanned buff will flash on and off as players are coming and going if you are teetering on the number for outmanned or not. Once in a while you even get that big zerg that transfers in just before you died and now you have to pay for those repairs.
If you are paying for damage repairs with the outmanned buff on the entire time, that would indeed be a bug.

Strange… I definitely have been receiving armor damage when outmanned. It just doesnt require any money outlay to repair. I dont get any from a falling death though.
Must be bugged for me. Doesnt matter too much though, being free and all!
First time it happened, I was rather confused as to why it didnt say a price for repair.. Then I saw I was outmanned. Wiki definitely says “No armor damage on death” though. Ill bug it next time.
