PVE map wvw
Open world duels, WvW or GvG would require a vision and work on their part… So it won’t happen.
Been asking for a Open World PvP since launch but they don’t seem to be interested.

isn’t wvw open world pvp already?
Its a separate instance with its own ruleset, so no.
Its theoretically possible to mix WvW and PvE but its gonna be so much work its not viable to do. I doubt they even have that on the table for GW3.
I can imagine it being done in the same way meta events are done – a zone has a 3h battle which pit 3 servers against each other. After that it has a period of “peace” (ie PvE). At any given moment there would be 4 zones at war. When you join a zone at war, its instanced like WvW (ie 3 servers fight and you join your servers instance). When you join it at peace, its like megaserver PvE. Some zones might be set up as EoTM as well.
But of course, all zones in the game would have to be built as WvW base and then have PvE added on top of them, like 2 layers you can flip on or off. Not gonna happen. An interesting aspect of this would be guild persistance through PvE – if your guild claimed a keep during the war, thats still your keep during the following peace (except the guards are friendly for everyone. Well, maybe they insult enemy servers).

Oh I see, it’s a dungeon.
I’ve suggested a couple times that one non-starter PvE map could be PvP enabled and rotated each week but everything in GW2 is about hand holding and minimum effort so a dysfunctional and dying RvR is the closest you’re getting to “open world PvP” here.
I honestly love this idea, however I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. The amount of work it would take to redesign even 1/4 of the maps to fit a wvw layout is impractical. The only way I could see it happening is through an expansion where it focused on gaining or losing territories, kind of what they did in gw1 factions with the luxons and kurzicks. Great idea but sadly I don’t think it would ever happen
wvw is gw2’s version of open world pvp, there is a very old interview article about it
it also explains why making openworld pvp is not feasible in gw2

What exactly do you want that WvW isn’t already providing?
Because I have a pretty good idea I already know the answer, and it’s “preying on other players”.

ya that’s my first thought on pve maps but pvp component. The silly thing is you can already prey on the weak players; if you have done enough roaming its pretty obvious how they navigate the map.
Often, open world PvP is exactly like regular PvE except any player may choose to attack another player (some distance from a Waypoint). There doesn’t need to be a faction system involved.
When a player attacks another player, that player is flagged as a combatant allowing any other player to attack them without tripping their attack flag. Guilds that are at war with another guild can attack those other guilds without tripping the attack flag as well.
Typically Open World PvP maps have high end resources which makes it lucrative for players to risk collecting items there. Dying in those zones typically drops some of the rewards collected by a player so far.
This system allows for a better GvG environment, rewards players for taking risks and creates an adversarial system between collectors and hunters. In simple terms, an actual reason to try and kill each other.

Well if each city was a faction that’d be six instead of three factions you’d have larger territory gains and more maps. Obviously skewed the closer the map was to the city. Guild claiming areas like in factions. Many of the new maps allow for enemies to capture so I didn’t think it was too much of a stretch. Already tons of forts, towers and mines, some forts even limit access to the next area essentially controlling the front and keeping the number of highly active maps down.

It would still be separate from PVE. Just use the maps you already have. Map gains are much more exciting than points. Control Lions Arch would be much more exciting than SM.
Would absolutely ADORE something like this. I think part of the problem with WvW right now is that it feels like a scaled up pvp map, not a real landscape with strategic points and resources to take and hold for concrete reasons beyond a score. Think how much fun a massive battle across, say, northern Harathi would be. . . or through Lornar’s pass. . .

I like the way Blade and Soul did open world pvp. It was completely optional. You had to equip a tabard that had an opposing faction tabard as well. There were quite a few opposing factions. Pick your side and go nuts. If I recall correctly it took a while to take off the item so you couldn’t cheese it. If you’re not wearing the item (which gives a warning before use) you’re not tagged for pvp. That way people who don’t want to participate wouldn’t have any huge complaints other than events going on. Maybe not have it available on maps where meta events were currently happening? Idk. I would have so much fun though.
I just want to fight in new places and enjoy the scenery.
