Crystal Desert is full 99% of the time and people think it’s dying. Relax people, relax.
I hate to say it but i kind of agree. I wish Anet would reconsider. In my opinion the negative effects free transfers had are far less significant and detrimental than the effects paid transfers will have.
The impacts of paid servers will be a long-term feel as opposed to immediately felt. Current players will finally settle into a “home” and newer players will begin to fill the rest. As long as the game continues to draw players everyone should feel the benefits over time.
IMO, an alternative to buying a server transfer would be nice. Shameless plug.

before, if you were bored of losing or stale game or whatever reason, you could give it a shot from a different servers perspective, that’s what most people did.
now, people would just stop playing, right now, populations and timezone problems are a far bigger issue than Anet likes to acknowledge.
And the Payment cost based on population is so misleading!, ill give you 3 examples
1. SFR – tier 1 server, medium population, high WvW activity , so less cost on transfer
2. Blacktide – High population, but dead WvW, high cost to transfer
3. Desolation – High population, average WvW activity, High cost of transfer.

I still think they just need to increase the size of the tiers. Such as to 6 servers, just so the matchup is completely random every week, with the tier list changing every month.

Paid transfers get announced, bandwagoneers flock to servers that seem to have best chance of winning, guilds flock to servers where they deem they can have most fun. In the process servers change radicaly.
But population doesn´t vanish, it just moves, some servers take a hit and will fall lower in the brackets (hurts, i know, i´m in the middle of one of these), some get more population and will start rising. For every server that gets “destroyed” there has to be another that will take it´s place, none of them suddenly vanish after all.
After the initial chaos servers will settle down and become more stable than previously now that there will be no free mass movements to winning servers.
Paid transfers have nothing to do with games overall population dropping.

If you feel that your server is dying out, and will go extinct with the paid transfers, transfer away while you still can. No one will force you not to.
There are still plenty of thriving servers outside of t1/t2, at least in EU.
I’m okay with paid transfers. But I was also okay with the idea of free transfers, but a 1 week hold on WvWvW on your new server to prevent rampant server hopping.
I’d also be okay with all players getting a free transfer once a year.

This is probably going to be a crippling problem, and may have already killed WvW here, at least in an upwardly mobile sense.
Prior to this announcement we’ve had to rebuild and grow with bigger guilds going up tiers to new servers. With this announcement we’ve lost guilds, and individuals have started to leave in large numbers. As a small low tier realm, there was always the prospect of people moving down to us to escape the rat race at the top. We’re not attractive at all for a paid transfer, and anyone PvP minded will be scorned to select us from a competitive perspective.
I personally am considering a change now before the paid transfer myself :// I wouldn’t consider it at all were it to remain free.

They just handled it horribly which amazes me as the impact free transfers followed by the way they handled the paid ones could have been seen from miles away.
Its absurd that people think servers on high/very high population are “dying” by any stretch of the word. Tiers 6 to 8 looks reasonably balanced now so they can get an awesome timezone limited meta going with tonnes of scope for small team tactics, ninja and cross borderland hostage taking. Theres not going to be any more guilds from the higher tiers trying to make pet projects out of your server! Win!
If I didn’t have so many broheims on Mags thats the kind of WvW I’d like to play – just enough pop to fully defend 1 borderland and your share of eternal. You get to play elaborate cross borderland ninja psyops games. You concentrate too much force in an attacking BL and your home BL is wide open to technical stealth rushes. The mind games you can play are brilliant (we had some great ones with YB in tier 4).
I agree with the wish for the EU/US server split to be tossed aside which could result in maybe one bottom tier being eliminated but paid transfers needed to happen sooner rather than later (or never) for the overall long term health of the game. Those lamenting the fact that they can no longer jump ship on a whim to see if the “feel” of another home might suit them better have had plenty of time to do just that and realize it is a lot more about perception and their reaction to adversity. Games and online communities are what you make of them and do take a bit of effort.
Granted ANET has not yet built into the game the proper incentives for community building and loyalty but I am hopeful they have some goodies in the works yet even if they do not, I know from DAoC and the giant disaster that was clustering that the game will be better off for years to come for the choices they are making now. We can argue some about the best way to go about closing down free transfers but there is nothing out there that would convince me it should not be done A.S.A.P.

EU has half the servers in Medium poulation for the pat 2 months, and these arent even WvW nos.
I disagree. The upcoming removal of free transfers is forcing the fair-weather-flitters to pick somewhere they need to actually make an effort going forward. That will probably stick in their craw.

Paid transfers will have the same effect free transfers had, but there won’t be as many of them, once this initial “land rush” is over. The problem this week is that all the free transfers that were going to happen anyway in the next 6 weeks or so are happening now.
The tiers will re-align and things will calm down in a couple of weeks.

What killed WvW is the free transfers, remember that free transfers were only supposed to be available for a couple of weeks, 1 month max; but since they have been free from day 1 we’ve had people bandwagoning to the top tier servers claiming the work of the good guilds on those as their own.
For example KISS moved from Gunnars Hold to Aurora Glade and those who took longer to transfer or were undecided got a lot of harassment from some GH members. AG was in the same tier at the time and only 1 rank higher.
Now take TDA, they too were in GH and kept badmouthing us for moving, and yet to our surprise we find ourselves fighting against them cos they are now in Gandara. KISS and others who moved with us helped AG move up the ranks, we worked for that; TDA most likely have not.
It has been this attitude that has messed up the servers and ruined WvW.
I even spent a week in Seafarer’s Rest on a friend’s account and the WvW is all about numbers, there are guild that do use tactics but most were just about sending in the wave of players, and if you wipe, no matter just respawn and charge in again – repeat until you capture the keep.
Remember to buy the officially endorsed GW2 Steel Series Keyboard, it supports macros!

It’s the same routine that every MMO goes through within the first 6 months of its existence.
“This game is dead! No one plays it anymore!”, says your average MMO gamer as he sits in a second phase or overflow.
I’ve played lots of MMO games. Perhaps too many and with each one server shifts happen and suddenly a server is dying or is dead. WoW was supposedly dead 3 months before BC came out. It has millions of subs. Definitely fine. SWTOR was “dead” three months after its release but it was fine and is doing great after going F2P.
Everyone judges a servers success based upon its Tier in WvW but even in T6 servers you find PLENTY of players,; they just aren’t WvW oriented.
tl;dr
My advice is to either transfer to a T1 server and join the rest of the bandwagoning fools or move to a T2/T3 server and have fun. Or you could stay on your “dead” server and have fun with PvE. Long story short, this game is doing fine and paid transfers will stop all the terribad guilds from server hopping.

The only problem the lower tiers have is listening to the upper tiers whine and worry about how bad we supposedly have it.
Do us all a favour and send us gold, clear your conscience, and go on with the rest of your lives.

i was talking in terms of WvW, this is a WvW thread.. nobody cares about PVE. and if u havent checked EU . pls do.. a lot are already medium populated within 6 months.
I have a friend who plays on Anvil Rock and absolutely loves it. I play on Sanctum of Rall which is almost certainly headed to Tier 1 and am beginning to hate it.
With guesting and cross server dungeons, the PvE world is perfectly fine. It is the WvW world that is suffering and I don’t think you guys on the lower tier servers really know how good you have it.
When we do a WvW event, all 4 worlds are either queued or are almost full so we can never get our full guild into a borderland. Once we start into the event and started taking territory all random Rallians looking to latch on to succesful pushing group queue up for the borderland we are in. This ends up preventing any of our late joining guildies from getting in.
We are never able to have a full guild event going anymore and the queues at times (EB is usually 2+ hours every night) are getting to be ridiculous.

2 hour queues? Holy cow you guys might actually win Tier 1 with that kind of dedication. Both SoS and JQ only get 15 minutes at most.
Everyone begs and cries for free transfers to end, then when that happens they complain about it. I am glad I am not a game developer! Ha!

yep. i belive it will balance back out eventually. not everyone is looking for the same things and have different priorities. Que times will play a factor in this. for all we know there might be a few guilds on the top tier servers waiting as long as they can (to see how things are going) then transfer to a server with lower pop and good fights so they don’t have to set in a que to play with their friends.
I think the best option for everyone is to try and continue attracting as many new players to the game as a whole as possible. Beyond this, everyone making WvW as inclusive as possible for everyone on their server will keep more people playing WvW. I think many people often forget that there are in fact a lot of people who play this game alone (essentially) and that by being overtly rude or taking any kind of exclusionary attitude toward the “stragglers” in WvW will only serve to hurt it in the long run.
My thought processes behind this are that people’s first experiences in GW2 are generally not WvW and that if a large population sample becomes disgruntled and feels like the “wvw people are kitten” that they will spread that word among new people playing the game; that their first time in WvW, seeing someone make a derogatory remark about noobs in WvW will only reinforce their belief and lead to them spreading it.
Some people are going to gravitate toward high population servers when they create their first character and some are going to look for low population servers – I know people that do both. People that are ‘recruited’ are going to go wherever their friends are regardless. Both offer different and unique experiences and I don’t think there will ever be a complete solution – to population differences – outside of hardware getting to a point where we no longer need different servers or instances.
I am in full support of free server transfers being eliminated; unfortunately, I believe this is punishing individuals because of a problem caused by guilds. I do not feel that server transfers are a problem until you begin having guilds transfer en masse – especially when those guilds have hundreds of people.
Sorry for the rambling post but it is just some random thoughts on the different topics I’ve seen brought up here. As a whole I think it is a wonderful game and I do not harbor ill will towards almost anyone I’ve come across in-game or in these forums. Even the most divisive topics I’ve seen covered are generally handled with out becoming personal or insulting. GW2 has a uniquely mature audience in that regard and that is one of the fundamental reasons I’ll be playing this game for a long time to come regardless!
