Perfect example of transfer issue
WvW should be by teams or wvw exclusive servers and not by pve servers.
This is a pve game, wvw is only a mode or minigame inside a pve game. PVP/wvw is not truly integrated into the core game.
PvE don’t need to transfer ever so let’s not even worry about that.
If we think the problem is that there should be more people transferring off the high WvW population servers to low population servers, let’s just do the direct and simple thing:
Close transfers except to a rotating list of select few low ranked servers.

It is called World vs World because it is SERVER vs SERVER. The servers fighting each other is the core principle of WvW.
Does the population and coverage issue suck? Yep. But that is what you are going to get, because the majority of people who play GW2 are PvE players. Some might come in and play WvW now and then, but not like the dedicated WvW players. Even some sPvP players wont even play WvW.
The sad reality is, that if Anet tried to force people to transfer to certain servers, or that they didn’t allow transfers at all, people would complain about that, just like there are people who are complaining about stacking.
Can’t please everyone.
I feel bad for the designers, because they not only have to fix the game mode, make it more attractive to losing teams, but they also have to make sure that what they do doesn’t get exploited. Attempting to balance something, that can never be balanced is going to frustrate a lot of people.

If a pve person doesn’t participate in wvw, and they are tired of hitting the server selection button everyday and selecting the server that they like to play on, then that person will be compelled to transfer.

I wouldn’t agree with that because I know a lot of people that play on higher tiers because they want to be able to play with WvW-minded people, and/or actually have people online to play with in WvW during certain times of day. (Something that higher tiers tend to provide)
Some others enjoy WvW just as much but like the lower pops because of the roaming, and avoiding queues, skill lag, etc.
IMO the biggest problems with transfers right now, assuming we are speaking with leagues in mind, is that ANET should have locked in the matches when they made the announcement that the start date would be extended.
All they did by not locking them in is allowed people to move around to the extent that the ratings will mean a lot less, and in fact might even give ANET an excuse to claim that leagues are viable because of the “upsets” that might occur.

Dungeons and fractals are instanced. Temples and world bosses are hardly ever on the same server you’re on. There are lots of PvE guilds on low ranked WvW servers you and your friends can join and would have transfers available to.
WvW guilds in the low tiers right now are compelled to transfer because activity outside prime time and outside Eternal Battleground is drying up, which exasperates the problem and is snowballing more guilds to leave.
It’s still fun and I appreciate the scale of the fights but it’s 14 months of more people leaving low tiers than coming in. It’s gonna dry up if nothing changes. WvW is dying on the lower tiers and if Blackgate PvE guilds can’t recruit from tier 8 they can blame the WvW Blackgate guild that sat in Gate of Madness Lion’s Arch kitten talking our server telling us to transfer.

If the situation stayed the way it is, I’d be okay with it but the population inequality is growing. Small servers are getting smaller. The game’s incentives are to play on higher population servers. ET and FC aren’t tier 8 because they got bigger but because other servers are getting smaller.
I’m of the opinion the lower ranks could use more people and the upper ranks could use less people and I support policies that go to that end. Just a bell I wanna ring on the forum.

I agree with you there, I just think that ANET never really intended on people being in WvW 100%. So as people picked their starting servers, they started to realize what type of server they were playing on.
Like you said, the PVE is moot because you can just guest. The reason people transfer is to find a place to play the game mode they like. WvW has the short end of the stick out of the 3 game modes, because it is the only one that really locks you into a server.
I can sPVP with anyone, I can PVE with anyone, but I can only WvW with the folks that are here on the server I chose at launch. There does have to be a way to re-populate the lower tiers, but I think the issue is that every suggestion tends to have some kind of detriment to the other tiers.
You know as much as I loathed SWTOR for it poor performance and management of the servers upto the point a large proportion of the servers became ghost towns, what they did to try to balance things would I think make sense in GW2… create a transfer window where players were given a choice of free transfer destination servers… these will of course target lower pop servers in an effort to balance out levels… those low servers that are left then get merged with other low pop servers…. simples really.
By implementing such an open transfer policy in GW2, ANET is allowing the situation to become worse for many servers and I am talking across the whole spectrum of activity not just WvW, sPvP or WvW. Another school boy error by ANET was to not lock transfers out for a period of time after their League announcements before providing a managed transfer policy as already stated… end result now is that some servers are being stripped of numbers in such areas as WvW – just another nail in the games longevity imo…..time will tell though.
Current EU matchup between some of the highest ranked servers:
Seafarers Rest, ranked 1 (very high)
Elona Reach, ranked 5 (very high)
Piken Square, ranked 2 (high)
Take a wild guess where the bandwagon rolls? But no worries, we’ve only seen 2-3 hours queue for EB in primetime. What’s another 6 hours?
Anet doesnt know the meaning of the word “balance”.
There is really no point in beating the horse anymore, us the minority are well aware of the issue, one would think its pretty obvious to Anet but I guess its not. They did this earlier in the year, the same concerns were raised, the same concerns were ignored. I don’t see what’s different now, just accept the fact that they don’t care and move on.
And now transfers are on SALE! YES! /s
What exactly do the rankings mean when determining leagues when ANet puts transfers on sale in the weeks leading up to the league itself?
Absolutely nothing. Now each and every server’s population is completely up in the air.
All is proceeding as I have foreseen it. The match ups will be horrible, no work will be done to fix them, and both winning and losing sides will quit playing WvW.
Tack on the November launch of next gen consoles diminishing a portion of the game population, and PvE holiday events further devaluing WvW and come December, WvW will be a dead game mode. By the time they try to repair the damage next year the competition will be firing up their hype engines into over drive announcing their spring release dates and intensifying the draw to consoles as both Destiny and The Elder Scrolls Online will be onboard. The relevance of GW2 as a whole is entirely dependant on the success or failure of two huge IP’s competing for the 2014 market. The only thing GW2 has to keep it alive is the lack of a sub fee barrier. Both PvP modes are miss managed, under developed, and disconnected from what the audience wants. PvE is a shallow rewards driven low quality high quantity mode appealing primarily to the casual gamer, who are notorious for being unreliable as a core fan base, and will likely just go buy whatever next big game their friends are playing.
If they keep up with this unsustainable development model I don’t expect to even hear about WvW by this time next year…unless it’s in one of those “hey you remember how bad those ANet devs kitten ed up their version RvR? LOL! What a bunch of dumb sons of kitten s.”
Maybe Anet started out with too many choices of servers. We might need a lot more people playing the game to fill up the lower population servers.
transfer fee should be based on WvW rank.
of course, there must be a population cap……
