Playing as support
I was playing as a full banner-healer-warrior mostly in WvW for a good month and realized that it isnt rewarding at all regarding to loot up to this day.
Trying to find an “in-between” build isnt effective so now I rebuild my warrior to full damage like the other 90% of characters around and voilá, now i get the loot.
Only pure direct damage is being rewarded, forget about indirect condition damage and heal support if you are looking for loot.
Sorry for the bad news
That sucks.. Why would they design it that way, plenty of people enjoy playing support characters.
I gotta agree with this. Players buffing/healing other players should get the same rewards the players doing damage are getting. I realize balancing that will be an issue (give the supporters too many rewards and everyone will switch to support, talking about boring WvW) but there has to be some middle ground where supporters get drops like the DPS’rs do.
Support players have never really been rewarded in MMO’s…. you could spend your time as a full healer in other MMO’s in PvP and you’d get very little reward whilst they reaped in the benefits of it all.
It’s poopy but it happens in every MMO.
WvWvW Player Who Doesn’t Have Much of A Clue
hmmm … I play a “support” ranger … roots, mud, stacking vulnerability … and have a great time doing it … even the loot is nice and shiny.
Those skills tag players, giving folks minor healing over time doesn’t tag the enemy

You still have to make an active effort to tag players. As support Guardian my main form of tagging is through wall of reflection and using staff skills.

There are plenty of way you can support your group in this game. it’s just not support in the conventional sense. In most MMO’s the support is in the back playing Wack’a Mole with health bars while kitting (which is fun, I’ve done it.). In this game however support takes on a much more of a front line role. Chills, cripples, poison, vulnerability, combo fields, battle field control (walls, wells, anything that stops or delays the enemy) these are things that a good support will be using. Trust me If you do these things, you’ll get you loot.
You’ll get less bags, but your contributions can be enormous.
Guardians can stop an entire enemy raid in their tracks with walls and sanctuaries. Tomes are very powerful in mass PvP.
Most guilds don’t make full use of their Guardian’s as much as Mesmers though because they don’t want to force people to play specific builds. When I was in Condemned we use to have multiple Guardian’s coordinating in guild chat and Team Speak and we could literally plug a hole in choke holes.
3-5 Guardian’s chain walling + sanctuary = you aren’t getting in.

I think Warhammer Online is the best example of how support players get rewarded, that I’ve played at least. When you heal someone and he gets a kill, you get experience for that kill. Possibly not the full amount, but still, you get something. And if you played in a group with friends, you also got shared exp and loot. And healing also counted as contribution for EVENTS, they dont seem to do that in GW2 at all! Come one ArenaNet, throw supporters a bone. I dont care if I have to be in the front/fight to support, as long as I’m not forced to KILL people, but rather SUPPORT PEOPLE to get kills. And that should also be rewarded.
I loved playing support in Warhammer Online, you didnt feel left out like you feel in GW2. Too bad it had many other fundamental game design flaws.

Try and hang in there for a couple more months! Big WvW update is coming in Feb. Hopefully we get news on what is included as the time approaches. I know it is going to be huge though and change a lot.
I’ve come to accept that you can’t play a full support character in GW2, but it sucks that an all DPS character will get more rewards than a mix of DPS and support.
GW2 seems to have tried to improve on past games with various things, but they went backwards or ignored recent advancements in other things. Rewarding support players and area looting being two of the ones that I wish for the most.

DAoC Support system is and was the best, Warhammer originally being a Mythic product used cmore or less the same system, the only real difference was DAoC was more rewarding.
Before you had to actually kill someone to get any reward from the events. And people like me who preferred to play as a support and help out, heal, revive etc was left in the dust.
Don’t need to kill anyone to get credit for events. Any point capture events just require you to stand in the circle that appears. For point defense events I don’t think you have to actually kill an attacker to get credit. I’m pretty sure you just need to be there defending for a certain percentage of the event timer.
As for kills, finishing a downed player does not affect getting credit or loot for the kill. You just have to do 5-10% percentage of the damage done to an enemy for credit and a chance at loot (small enough that even a support build should be able to achieve). Also, run in groups because as long as you do SOME of the damage but your group as whole did 5-10% of the damage you will get credit and a chance at loot (doesn’t matter how much damage you contributed, as long as you did contribute). Obviously a full group will give you the most chances at loot. Also use lots of AoE abilities as hitting more enemies will give you more chances to get credit and loot.
Long story short, playing a support build you should still get a pretty fair amount of rewards. Thats as long as you don’t stay in the back and try to play healbot. There isn’t supposed to be dedicated healers in this game so focus on making support builds that support your team while still dealing a moderate amount of damage and you should do fine.
Every camp flipping team should have 1 support in it. Ranger is highly lacking in this category. Mesmer is most used.

We actually might start get some useful loot which just means that we really need to go full berserker.

Having run a regen banner warrior I can say the problem is u don’t do enough damage to most of the people u hit to get any loot

Do what I do and get two sets. One support (healing guardian), one damage (greatsword guardian). When you want to farm loot bags switch out your gear and then switch them back when you want to support (taking camps etc). You don’t have to respec but if you have to its only 3s I believe.
