SoS again with a bad luck roll. R1 vs. R7 is pretty brutal, I feel for you guys.
Maybe the solution is to offer free transfers off of the top servers to specific lower ranked servers for a while. WoW had a similar system where every so often, to help balance out populations, they’d offer free transfers off of specific servers onto other specific servers.
In this case, you could do something like free transfers off of Sanctum of Rall if the target/destination server is let’s say Devona’s Rest. Have the transfer promotion stay open for a week or two, and then see how it’s altered populations/the overall health of WvW.
Now that guesting is here the only reason server populations really matter is for WvW anyway, so may as well just be honest about that and go all in on working on viable population shuffle mechanisms.
Edit:
Clarification: The goal would be to better help the even distribution of server populations for WvW. If we’re going to keep the random match-ups, then let’s work on making it so that there’s less of a population gap between each tier.
People would still be able to pay to transfer up or down, but the free transfer option would give people incentive to move somewhere that’d improve the overall health of WvW.

honestly people that are in T1 will always stack so let them fight each other endlessly and complain about matchups being same. They can transfer right now if they want but chose to stay. Even if server transfers open some server like HoD or bottom server will get stacked and move up ranks kittening up matchups for weeks. I hope anet can just adjust the random rolls different for each tier so it’s harder for T1 servers to move down.

If anet can’t fix it servers like SoS which are in a limbo moving up/down will have to stop playing on Mon-Tues because if we just fight and keep things interesting our rating goes up and it increases our chances of getting matched up with T1 servers.

I disagree. Score isn’t important, WvW is all about the (siegeless) fights.
I’ve fought JQ/BG guilds for so long that I can not only identify their characters by appearance but could also tell you their builds. I want to fight new players, new tactics, new builds, etc.
I think you’ll find that the higher tier opponents are respectable. If you only have 20 and want to fight 20 then request a GvG on the thread and I’m sure you’ll get many takers.

You’d be surprised, there’s tons of small guilds, solo players, etc. on every server and in every game. Not everyone that’s currently on SoR is necessarily there right now because they’re on top: they could have started the game there, they could have friends there, they could have transferred specifically to finish mapping, and so on.
Ranks getting screwed up for weeks isn’t really a problem anymore now that the match-ups are being shuffled across tiers: you’re already seeing much larger servers facing much smaller servers, so all this would do is help redistribute people across a larger surface instead of keeping them bubbled into one corner.
If 100 people (let’s say 50-60 people and one medium sized guild) want to skip off of SoR and move somewhere else, the only thing stopping them right now is the transfer fee. Maybe they’re not fully committed to grinding the cash to transfer off… maybe a free transfer option would give them the push they need?
Why might people want to leave? Also many reasons. Maybe they dislike the queues, or perhaps they’ve finished mapping? Maybe they like playing with smaller numbers of people, or enjoy a more intimate environment? Large population servers can’t cater to every player archetype as well as medium sized servers can, so shuffling some people from high population to low population servers helps make more medium servers.
A solution like this helps guys like Peetee have his concerns addressed (giving him fresh match-ups), while also allowing smaller servers (like SoS compared to SoR) gain a bit of equilibrium in the overall picture. It also helps ArenaNet reach their goal of balancing WvW a bit more and getting more population balance in order across the board. It helps to legitimize WvW as a spectator sport with actual brackets, rather than just being a list of which servers have the most populous armies.

Since you just ninja’ed me on this topic I’ll post my topic post here instead
Can anyone explained how we (Sea of Sorrows) Just went up 3 ranks?
Although I don’t like it we where crushed last week.
Sea of Sorrows: 156,961
Fort Aspenwood: 213,000 (-56,039)
Tarnished Coast: 261,216 (-104,255)
And now I found we actually went up 3 ranks from 10 to 7 and are now in tier 2 fighting the victor from our tier and the current NA WvW champ?!
This cant be what Anet ment when they said. “we won’t match servers against other servers whose rating falls outside of an acceptable range.” or the very least I would not count Rank 1 vs Rank 4 vs Rank 7 an acceptable range.
Alternatively the match-ups should randomize +-1 at max.
This way you may only face a world 4 ranks above or below you at max.
Implementation would be the current rank system then going from top down to each world and add to the rank by a random (-1,1). Simple and effective.
I believe SoS to be a medium level server, we have recovered a lot since the mass exodus of our pro guilds, but not ready for high tier game-play.
I have already spoken with my guild and no one in it wants to play WvW this week not with such unfair teams.
I hope this is fixed asap, and would even approve a midweek change just to fix this obvious error.
I disagree. Score isn’t important, WvW is all about the (siegeless) fights.
Easy for you to say with 80 man zergs on all 4 BLs and us outmanned on 2 BLs and barely any queues elsewhere (EB/SoSBL) soon after reset.
I think you’ll find that the higher tier opponents are respectable. If you only have 20 and want to fight 20 then request a GvG on the thread and I’m sure you’ll get many takers.
You seem to not understand the population difference. The only guilds which can field 20 people on SoS are TS and FaTe and maybe Fang on a good night. Apologies if I left out the other 1 or 2 SoS guilds that can field this miraculous number of 20 players in WvW.
I think the T2 servers can do okay enough against T1 servers. For example, I think that TC vs SOR vs DB would be a solid round.
However, there is currently a server that was T4 two weeks ago that is facing a T1 this week. That shouldn’t happen ever.
HoD is currently fighting DR and BP (T5 Server). To be honest its a given who will win. But we had a blast on reset. We are just looking for good fights most of the people in my guild and others in HoD decided having fun is more important than PPs. Since after all is WvW is a numbers game. But like I said was a fun time our first wipe coming from the evil and all powerful cliff. I swear it only looked like a 12 foot drop.
Yo mama jokes to stronk.
Forum Mods to weak.
If you can only field 2 BLs worth of players then just ignore the other 2. Sounds to me like there’s some great fights happening in EB and SoSBL. Now I know where to go when I get home….
If you can’t field 20, what about 10? 5? 1? We will accommodate any request you make, we just want some fights.

No one is going to transfer off of SOR. Once your soR your SoR 4 lyfe! I did come up with another suggestion though that I thought was good. It was about using the overflow system to combine wvw maps for low pop servers. So for example ET HOD and um FC would share a single wvw que and when they went into a map they would be dumped into the same overflows every time.

Hi Anet,
We need to keep T1 servers in same matchup but alternate colors. The gap between T1 & T2 is 130-150 points before this new system. We need to keep the RNG roll under 100-125 points please so servers like SoR don’t get demoted to T2 ever
SOR hasn’t been demoted, there are essentially no tiers any more. The issue is the range for the random factor is too large anet have been told this time and again since they first announced this yet they won’t listen. This matchup is ludicrous and can only damage WvW on SOS.

This would probably just drag PvE people off of tier one servers and down to other servers. Worst case scenario, it drops the Full servers down to Very High making more room for dedicated WvW players to transfer to them. It’d be better if they capped the tier one servers at Full all the time until the WvW populations balanced out a bit. We shouldn’t be seeing guilds transferring to tier one servers with the top heavy imbalance already. Put strict caps on the free transfers to lower tiers servers (and don’t base it off of server population, we all know that doesn’t determine WvW strength). It’s too easy to cheat the server caps with black outs.

You want to fight new people? Transfer to a less stacked server. Almost all of the problems tier one servers face are created by themselves. The zerg meta (the zergs are much more manageable in lower tiers), the lag (there is no lag in lower tiers), the queues (there are no queues for the majority of servers), the static matches (most tiers were stale, but tier one is so top heavy it’s very unlikely any of the servers can be replaced). I’m sick of hearing tier one players complain about problems they create for themselves.
SoS bl is outmanned on reset night and it’s almost entirely green. I think Devon owes us an explanation after last week and it getting much worse this week. Two weeks in a row of terrible matches is a very long time.
On the bright side, sPvP is looking a lot more appealing on SoS.

Just implement the same RNG system for WvW team paychecks. You may get that elusive (rare) bonus, extra vacation days, your normal paycheck, or food stamps. (but mostly food stamps) See how they like dealing with it. Oh wait…

I agree with this totally… SoS was holding their own against the other t2 servers, but against the top t1 server… it makes what would have been a much better fight 1t vs 2 t2 servers into a T1 v T2+T4 which isn’t nearly as fun.
That being said… so far we’ve wiped 2x+ our numbers multiple times so there are good fun fights to be had! I just really hope SoS just doesn’t get demoralized. Keep up that gumption you showed last week SoS!

SoS again with a bad luck roll. R1 vs. R7 is pretty brutal, I feel for you guys.
Id argue SOS got the lucky roll again and SOR got the unlucky roll. You realise how much SOR has to beat SOS by in order to not lose substantial points? SOS just has to show up and they are going to gain a lot of points.
they won´t adjust anything, everthing working as intened, be happy buy gems and go pve… that´s the way anet rolls

Yeah cause rating is worth so much. You can buy a legendary with it, you can buy armour with it, you can trade in rating for gems and it boosts your WvW rank. Rating is so much better than being in a competitive tier where you can flip towers, win fights and generally be rewarded for your WvW experience rather than be spawn camped.
SoS is fine, we are the ones with the green Evolution. The underdog adjustment is AWESOME.

Some people think winning is based on your zerg wiping out a 10 man group. HAHAHA I agree that TC and SoR will come to Sos level faster than FC moves up.
I care about and like WvW, but am primarily a pve player. I have 99% map completion, with every point EXCEPT the Overlook vista in EB (the Red Keep). We at Devona’s Rest have not been assigned red for months. When we finally would’ve been assigned red based on rank, they started this new matchup algorithm. We have “randomly” been green the last two weeks. Our current matchup is 21 vs 22 vs 14. Borlis Pass (#14) currently has +555 to +70 to +70. And yes, BP was assigned red. Thank you, Anet, for taking what was already frustrating for my server facing huge numerical disadvantages and pitting us against a server 7 spots ahead of us.
For the people that did not take advantage of free server xfers back when they existed, why are we being screwed out of map completion, which really shouldn’t be any harder than grinding out the maps? I know ppl will say, “Get a zerg together and go get the vista.” We have tried… for months. It’s not going to happen. Others might say “Xfer servers.” Well, that would cost a lot of gems. Not all of us are wealthy in-game or out-of-game.
I have my doubts the algorithm is giving us a 33.3% chance for red. I think it’s likely that when you are a lower pop server, you tend to get shuffled out of red when the higher ranked server gets thrown into your match-ups. Maybe I’m wrong, but it certainly seemed to work that way the last two weeks.
I have to admit I’m not sure why they randomized the colors at the same time as the matches. Imo, the top ranked server should still be green, middle blue and lowest ranked should be red.

Because that wouldn’t solve the problem for people on the top and bottom ranked servers (#1 and #24 NA and #1 and #27 EU).
Servers need to be matched outside their bracket, even against #1, #2, #3 servers in order to make the glicko rating meaningful again. Right now the rating is off reality by quite a bit. Unless lower rank servers ‘steal’ rating from higher ranked ones to rebalance the system the rating will continue to be meaningless.
It is absolutely fine that a rank #7 server can get matched up against the rank #1. SoR’s rating has been so inflated that SoS again is going up a huge amount of rating points.

The math is posted. While the chance of being a particular color does deviate from 33% on average a server has a 33% chance of being one color. For example if SoR’s worst roll puts them ‘blue’ in T2, SoR would have 2/5ths chances to be green, 2/5ths blue, and 1/5th chance to be red, depending how the other servers fall (I’m oversimplifying the math for this example I know)
Apathy Inc [Ai]
There is 1 matchup that is not a blowout on Saturday morning. T4 (9vs10v11) is within 1k for 1st and 2nd and 4k 1st and 3rd.. NO other match-up is closer than 7k from 1st to 2nd, and with leads of 17k, 16k, 22k, 8k, 7k, 24k, 15k from 1st to 3rd. This week is pretty much over on Saturday.
I thought there was not going to be “match-ups out of our range”?
PS: NA of course
My fun laughs at your server pride.
Id argue SOS got the lucky roll again and SOR got the unlucky roll. You realise how much SOR has to beat SOS by in order to not lose substantial points? SOS just has to show up and they are going to gain a lot of points.
I doubt many of them consider that lucky. A higher rating means nothing except that they’re more likely to be placed in matchups where they get stomped. Yay?
What’s important is the quality of gameplay throughout the week, and unfortunately it’s going to be poor for both SoR and SoS.
I think there needs to be a game option whereby when the imbalance reaches a certain level, two servers can vote on whether to form a permanent alliance for the rest of the week. That might go a ways to redress lopsided fights.

Ive played a tonne since reset and have had plenty of great fights as usual. Ive probably enjoyed myself more this week thus far than the previous few because TC and SOS has brought some new gameplay styles. I think people look at the scoreboard different to how I do. If I was playing for SOS I would be looking to secure an improvement on my servers rating this week just like I am with SOR and the dynamic of having the dominating force this week has added a different dynamic. I understand how its frustrating to be the weaker force, but still they are putting up a really good fight and I still feel like we are being put in our place and behind in where we should be right now in terms of points. I mean, we have lost a lot of points on JQ and BG recently because we had the unlucky roll and we really need to fight harder.
Another issue is that there’s little incentive for the 2nd place server to fight the first place server over the third place server. And there’s little incentive for third place to fight first place. If there was an incentive for both to go after the first place team, it would help even up the scores within tiers.
