It’s time for some positive thoughts. A light in the wintersday darkness as it were.

Whilst we are right to suggest ideas and perhaps even to complain about the things we don’t like, it is also true that no one likes to work in a hostile and negative environment. I believe a little courtesy harms no one and can make, even a virtual world, a better place.

These past 12 months have seen more development in WvW than we’ve had for a while. Some of these changes I have liked.

Personally I feel the end of the year makes this a good time to say thank you to the GW2 team for the things I have enjoyed in game, and to look forward to more developments in WvW during 2017.

If you wish to post your own positive thoughts here please do so.
If you simply wish to complain then there are other threads that you may find more suitable.

Nope. Without negative feedback, there’s no room to improve or fix any problems. Those who get up and silently leave cause lost revenue, and those who cover up the truth do just as much or more damage to the company long-term as they’ll think they’re doing fine or that the decay isn’t pertinent to any action they’ve taken.

There’s pretty much nothing to appreciate except for skirmishes. Too bad the act of skirmishing (fighting itself) isn’t actually any fun.

So long as the profession design in this game is terrible, people will complain; as will I.

The WvW team needs to do very little except for some population/matchmaking tweaks. Fact is, the act of fighting itself isn’t fun anymore, so even if they do fix the problems mentioned above, it won’t mean anything.

One of the challenges we’ve seen in the past with anet is that they are sensitive even when players provide positive criticism and have the best of intentions. So players become frustrated and mouth off in forums.

Negative feedback is important for game development as long as it is taken into account, considered, communicated on, and action is taken on it.

Positivity and gratefulness is important because it gives the debts motivation to continue to change things and gives them an understanding of what we DO like instead of only hearing negative things.

When I read these WvW forums it seems as though 90% think it’s awful, terrible, no fun and sheer misery.

On the other hand, when I log in to WvW day after day and listen to map/team/guild chat it’s maybe 10% complaining and 90% people seeming to be enjoying themselves.

Similarly, according to the forums, no-one plays WvW any more, everyone left and the game mode is dead. Yet when I play, as I do every day, and not even in NA prime either, I find a ton of people out doing stuff, commanders tagged up, zergs clashing, and structures changing hands.

Not saying everything is kittens and rainbows but it’s not all falling to pieces either.

The reward track was a step in the right direction.
Rotating the desert map and not completely scrapping it was a step in the right direction (though it still needs more wp’s for its size).
Linking did help remedy dying wvw servers, though it has not been the universal fix we were all hoping for.

But seriously thank you all for listening and trying. At this point I’m not sure what could be done or even how to go about it. WvW issues are pretty complex with the community compounding them in many different way. I was one of those that thought linking would have worked out better than it ended up being<shrugs>

What do you expect? If a person is not happy with the game they wouldn’t log into the game just to complain in chat, well most of them anyways, hence why you see 10% complaining and 90% seeming to enjoy themselves because they are in there to actually play.

Understand this, the forums is the place for feedback, it will obviously seem more negative because it’s mostly a place to discuss broken aspects of the game. Sub forums like wvw and spvp will be a little more negative because they cover focused groups of play, general forums is about everything in the game and wouldn’t be as negative unless it’s a heated topic, like legendary weapons being delayed.

It will become especially toxic at times when the developers don’t respond to pretty much anything posted, or they choose to post over to reddit instead. If it’s a one sided conversation people will get frustrated if they see their top issues are not even being considered, like now it’s class/skill balance.

As for “game mode is dead” look at the population from release, to HoT release, to now where we have links and half the matchups, look at how many commanders and guilds left now, if you’ve been playing wvw for 4 years you know the difference. The game mode is obviously dying, anet should at the very least be doing something to promote wvw and they don’t, that attention is on spvp and pve at the moment.

There have been many times I’ve posted ideas to try and help the game, but it feels like they never get seen, so why bother anymore? They did finally implement ideas like reward tracks, skirmish mode, ppk, and 211 scoring, but 90% of the last 4 years feels like they don’t bother reading these forums. You know the place they should be looking for problems with areas of their game and trying to make things better.

P.S The communication matter I would place squarely on Mo, it’s obviously he has it on lock down and that they won’t talk about future content or changes, so devs either can’t comment on stuff or they’re too scared to post and say the wrong thing.

Another derailing post. ^^

I’ve been playing MMOs since the late 90s and reading and posting on forums since then too. Forums have always been like this and indeed these are very far from the worst I’ve seen when it comes to negativity. Anyway, it makes precious little difference whether the game is successful or failing. Back before WoW, when EverQuest was the most successful western MMO and was still growing month on month, the forums became so toxic they had to be shut down completely for weeks because of the damage they were thought to be doing to the image of the game.

Nowadays forums are an archaic mode of communication. Social media have left them far behind. Developers use reddit, FB, Twitter et al because that’s where the majority of their players communicate – and where the people the developers would like to have as players communicate, more importantly. The surprise is that any developers post here at all, not that they don’t post more often.

Steam has a lot of user reviews telling about toxic nature of developers. We are all good here with Anet.

But yeah, at some point we were frustated about pew pew rangers; then Anet added ancient seeds to make it even worse. Many other annoying things have been added. Are Anet devs toxic under the hood or not, I don’t know.

I get it, using those other forms of media to get their message out because those are the more popular lines of communication with the younger generation these days. Easier to just tweet out a message and all your subscribers get it right away.

But most of those media outlets are basically one way communication, because they don’t carry on any lengthy conversations on any of those. Reddit is a forum with a different format and some more tools for users to use like upvotes.

What I don’t get is they open their own forums for communication, and yet like to use reddit instead, they say well there’s certain limitations for the game forums and yet they won’t even spend money to upgrade it. Not that it matters because they want to talk to customers as little as possible anyways.

Social media is fine for sending your message out, not exactly the best for when you need to collect proper information.

I can absolutely say that the reward tracks are what brought me back to playing WvW, rather than ignoring it outside of Gift of Battles for legendaries. Because honestly? Even with everything wrong with it if I can choose between WvW and sPvP to get clovers and finish out dungeon sets and seasonal reward tracks, I will pretty much always pick WvW, barring tournament seasons.

I think the next step is taking the plunge that I believe Anet has been dreading, and start having skills and combat mechanics function differently from WvW than from PvE. Lot of people like to point to when condi stack limits were removed and the change to stability as the time that WvW was “ruined,” and while I think there is more to it than that, they were absolutely changes that IMO were good for PvE and sPvP but do not work at the player vs player scale that WvW takes place in.

I’m busy attempting to build up community involvement again, offering some humorous diversions and getting back to the basics. I feel like if I’m going to play a game, I am going to find the best and most positive experience for myself and those around me too. If I can. That is a pretty tall order at the moment.

To put it another way, put some tunes on, share some laughs with friends and raid. Put on a quaggan tonic, race around the borderland. Find a new meta build. Date a skritt. Whatever it takes.

I would like to point out that the negativity isn’t from a dislike of the game it is typically from the love of it. The forums are a reflection of the community ANet has fostered which has basically centered around apathy that ANet has with the WvW forums.

We are desperate to hear from the developers and their liaisons. Sure there are trolls and players that will never be happy but most of the positive players have been soured by the silence.

Thread kinda got derailed talking about negative/positive feedback. I agree with the criticism, though. The issue is that when a good change is made, there are lots of folks who come to the forums and say, “hey, that’s great,” or “good job!” But they did it, so should we go on congratulating them every week?

It’s also unrealistic for me to make a post outlining all the positive changes I’ve seen over the last year before providing negative feedback on an ongoing issue that is effecting WvW.

But in light of your post, here are some things off the top of my head without spending too much time:

Squad UI
Scouting participation
Reward tracks
Proof of Heroics Vendor
Portable provisioner
5 minute “scouted” debuff after taking an objective.
Sentries having more importance
Watchtower
Unlinking supply to upgrades while getting rid of the automatic ugrade (that took way too long to rectify. We lost a lot of players to this delay)
Putting forth a lot of effort into the DBL to improve the map (great changes, like adding all the little steps, improving flow, but again, took way too long and lost a lot of players from this)
Gathering nodes
Skirmishes to even out scores
Probably some more stuff, but I’d have to sit back and think about it.

Biggest issues facing us today:
211 (This is killing WvW.)
Population issues
Class balances (of course, this is a forever, ongoing thing, but little work has been done here)

Blackgate Native. It takes tremendous strength and skill to pull a lever.

SquadUI was really driven by raids not WvW. I highly doubt we would have got it if not for raids.

As for 211 killing WvW…… exaggerate much! WvW has been on a downhill slide for years, nothing has happened in the few weeks we’ve had 211 that makes it worse.

Population issues are by far the biggest issue facing the mode.
