Hey all. Just thought this would be a fun topic. I know there are a lot of WvW commanders who come to this forum and was just wondering what your prefered profession is and why. Are there certain professions that are more condusive to being a commander (e.g. bunker guardians because survivability might be a little better) or is it all really just personal preference?

p.s. I am not asking because I want to become a commander. (1) I have no WvW skill or strategy and (2) you guys work hard and it is much appreciated to members of the zerg like me

Very high survivability. Popular choices are pure survivability guardian, warrior, maybe super bunker mesmer. Basically you need to be able to run into a zerg with your zerg following you. Dying is the worst thing that can happen to a commander because it halts all movement, and hurts people’s morale when the blue icon is dead on the ground.

I’d personally say guardian is the best commander profession.

The by far most popular commander on MS is a ranger using a bow ^^

Our guild raids are most often lead by d/d eles but i would also prefer a tanky guardian, warrior or maybe necro.

Crowd control can be really efective if you know what your doing, even changes the tide of a match.

Bunker guardians, I love them. But I’ll still follow the commander I like the most depending on his strategy and attitude, even if I have to rez him now and then.

Some of the best commanders got their pin on their main char, and didn’t have the time to think about the “best class” for being a commander. I really think it should be account wide.

And it also matters that during not-so-big fights, I tend to click enemies a lot until I find their commander. And yes, I prefer him being a backstab thief than a bunker guardian :p
(if you think there are no backstab thief commanders, you are wrong)

Don’t talk to me about toughness and vitality, damage avoidance is all in this game

The best commanders imo are the ones that can lead the masses and don’t take unnecessary risks.

Worst classes to be commander options (imo, obviously):

-Thiefs – A stealth approach don’t work very well when you have a small icon on the map. Spies can see them too…
-Mesmers – Mesmer relies to much on confusing the foes. Sometimes the allies will be confused too and follow a clone into the death trap.

Best classes – Guardians, Necromancers, Rangers. They can be very good at assaulting and defending. They have a good survival (which is needed to make the front line stick there. When the commander dies, and goes to spawn, the force will go there too, just to follow the commander). Support (Boons and Conditions) always are a good thing!

As for all other classes, i don’t have a solid opinion about them, so i better leave them out this analysis.

In my biased opinion , I’d say that warriors can achieve high survivability while dishing out more direct damage than guardians, making an initial push look more brutal and successful.

I’d have to say the best is a mesmer.. ok so I’m a bit biased, but I play a mesmer as a commander and people underestimate what we are capable of, we can take / deal with fair amounts of damage.. while putting out good damage ourselves.. not to mention a LOT of our utilities are incredibly powerful in group situations so we can support our allies. A lot of us nmesmers play a role that means we get right in to the thick of it too, simply because of how tough my build is I often find myself frontlining (sometimes even into the enemies backline) with my group behind me following close.

mesmers make good commanders, just because of two skills: veil and portal.

So much easier to have pugs stack on the portal if there is a pin on the portal entrance.
