wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
Hello WvW crowd…
I’m mainly a PvEr, I’ve dabbled a little bit on WvW here and there, but my experience is usually limited to karma trains, and in the rare cases I’ve actually followed to a fight I’m dead before I know what happened. With the new season coming out I plan to be doing some more WvW, mainly to get a chance at some of the weapon skins, but I don’t want to be just another useless PvEr taking space so I’m thinking of also taking the chance of actually learning more about WvW in the process. So here are some questions….
Other than elementalist (still not 80) and guardian (I enjoy doing dungeons with it the most, so I’m keeping it PvE built)… which profession should I use that’s a good mix of ease to use when it comes to WvW and utility in general, and what would a good build be for it?. Save for elementalist I have an 80 of each profession and enough badges saved for a full set of gear, so I want to go in with an actual WvW oriented profession and build instead of the PvE oriented ones I’ve always used (and died in). I plan on sticking to the zergs for now, might see how other options (roaming, small groups and so on) are as I go in. Of course I understand that knowledge of the game and the player skill is much more important that what profession you use, but I’d like some sugestions on what to use while I aquire those..
Also, any tips I could use would be appreciated. Looking forward to meeting you all in the battlefield and kill alongside you… or (most likely) get killed by you…
I am sure lots of people will come here and say warrior or thieves, since they are both great in trolling and disengaging fights when things going to get tough.
Warrior and Guardian are the two professions that doesn’t require much to be effective on WvW. (Zerging wise at least)
Some people will say thief, because you can just stealth away from danger, but they really lack on big zerg fights in my opinion, since they are super squishy and don’t have the sustain a elementalist can put.
As you learn about WvW you’ll be able to go with your other professions and play the one you like most on the style you preffer most (Zerging, Roaming, etc)
Warrior… easiest to be good with and does pretty much every style of WvW fighting good to great. There isn’t even a contest with another class in this regard IMO.
If you are new and want to be useful, the first thing is: join the Zerg, the server voice-chat and stay alive! (If you die you rally enemies that tagged you, and you can do 0 damage). You are already very useful if you just carry supplies and use them to build the siege the commander places!
Till you gathered experience how to stay alive, I would recommend you a staff well-necro (highest survivability with death shroud and epidemic well used and high range) or staff/hammer guardian (high survivability, shorter range).
In both cases soldier exo should be fine (armor and weapon in the citadel of you WvW-homelands for 1- gold and 100-200 Badges of Honor each, trinkets and back for 42k karma each at the temple of Grenth in Orr). Do NOT put expensive runes or sigils into equipment bought for badges/karma, you will not get them out. Crest of Soldier and/or Spahir-Jewels will do.
The more experience you get the more you can trade defense for more offense.
WEXP should go into 0) 1 pt only Siege Master and Repair Master 1) max Siege Bunker 2) max Defense against Guards 3) max Guard Killer and then into the sieg weapons you like most. After the first or second siege weapon skills consider Siege Might to max their damage.
I would NOT recommend you roaming in the beginning (you will have some bad roaming experiences when you try to reach your zerg) . First get a picture what is going on. Only exeption: you are in a roaming guild and do so with a handful experienced friends (but then you would not ask here I guess). Then you must ask them what build you should use and how you should use it. They will have strong suggestions how a build should be and cooperate with them.

IMHO
For roaming: mesmer, thief, warrior would be my choices. This, however, is very personal and left to flavour/scope.
For zerging: guardian, warrior, (staff) elementalist, necromancer. These are the most common/arguably useful classes in a group of 20+
For zerging:
Shout warrior

AH guardian

For roaming:
D/P thief
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_D/P_roamer
P/D thief
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_P/D_Condi_roamer
Here is my “do-it-all” warrior build:
In a large group setting, I will switch Bulls Charge with Balanced Stance and I will swap Cleansing Ire with Merciless Hammer. If I know I am going to run exclusively in a large group, I will go with a shout build similar to the one listed above. I will sometimes swap in Fear Me when fighting thieves, Berserker Stance for condi-bunkers as well as a few others based on the fight.
Bulls Charge is as much defensive as offensive. Keep in mind this build is compromised a bit for roaming so dueling builds are a tough fight. It excels in skirmish and runs well enough in zergs. Key is to keep the might stacks up. 25 might stacks are relatively easy against 2 or more opponents. Until the might is powered up, play defensively.

Roaming:
thief/warrior. They are just easier to get out of fights that turn against you.
Large scale/zerg:
GuardianWarriorElementalistNecro. GWEN
They are all important. My guild is now constantly asking for anything other than warrior.
Ranger, can do everything quite ok all at once. Wont say more. Ill leave the rest to the haters
Warrior with a full pvt gear, hammer, sword, warhorn, 00464 or 00644 or 00662 build with healing signet, dolly signet and lets rock
special choice will be….
engineer has strong cleaving dps (if you have the correct build)
ranger is average (even if you are using the correct build, the upcoming feature patch is gonna improve that build further, so it might push ranger from “average” to “good”)
otherwise
just go for warrior, is hard to go wrong with that
PS: go search the builds, not spoon feeding :’)

Good tactic.
Warriors plus waterfield spam at any time, beats larger numbers.
get some engies for crate spike and if i recall is a wf to.

Possibly more important than your class is that you play an 80th level character rather than an uplevel and you have high-end (exotic or ascended) gear that boosts your Vitality and/or Toughness so you can survive some hard hits and conditions unless you are really good at avoiding getting hit (like Soldiers/PVT armor). The Karma vendor at Arah and the Badges of Honor vendor in WvW both sell exotic PVT armor, though you might want something that boosts condition damage (like Dire/CVT), instead, if you pick a class that relies on that. As a warning, it’s impossible to extract a rune set or sigil from armor or weapons bought with Karma or Badges of Honor with a salvage kit (you need a very pricey upgrade extractor from the gem store), so if you get exotic armor that way, be careful what you put into it if you ever plan on changing it because you’ll basically have to buy the upgrade again unless that’s changed.

This link is excellent for those getting into WvW. For the builds, I would make some edits, but they are decent to good at best.
This is for zerg between 20-40 people, if you have more than 40 you can just blob them down (generally).
The name of the game to WvW is synergy. It is how well you work with the other people. Typically this means all classes but the medium armour classes have good synergy with one another (thief could be used in pick but it an extremely high skill base) but you want to keep to light armour or heavy armour. I would go with something that you enjoy more which is either frontline or backline. Speak with your server’s WvW guilds and see what you would like better, based off of your favorite class.
My only suggestion is if you run full zerk guardian you’re going to have a bad time.
