Q:

I have been pulled off walls more times than I can count. I am at the back end of a keep wall or other, clearly out of camera view and some guy manages to pull me off the wall. I witnessed one guy doing this at Anz in Eternal and there is no way that a normal camera view could see me where I was. Is this a camera exploit or working as intended?

I believe Mesmer has a ‘vacuum’ spell that can be targeted on the edge of a keep wall to suck anyone within 5 yards down to the ground. It’s not directly pulling you down as much as it’s just pulling you toward the AOE location, which happens to cause you to overshoot and fly off the wall.

One of his buddies could have targeted you and he could have assisted.
Also if you go against the wall, turn your back to it and zoom all the way out you can shift the camera to see almost an entire battlements above you.

Into the Void doesn’t need to target you to pull you down. It automatically pulls all players a certain distance away from it towards the center of the spell so if someone activated Into the Void on the side of a wall and there was no lip on the top of that wall it’ll yank you right off of it. You can roll dodge it though if you suspect a mesmer is about to pull you down.

Annoying as kitten, but working as intended. I want to say that it’s hard enough to defend a keep as it is and with this mechanic it is even more so.. but with the ability to put a catapult behind the door and KB any players using a ram.. I lose that argument. However, when the doors are reinforced, you don’t see rams so much as unreachable trebuchets and catapults.

I do think if people are going to stand next to a tower with walls fortified/reinforced or not, they shouldn’t be able to defend themselves as well as they can. The AoE on the walls while defending is completely ridiculous to a point where it’s almost impossible to stand in a place for more than 3 seconds until someone lays down lava font or meteor.

I had a Necro pull my Ranger down the other day when it was just me and one other person defending against five of their players… I proceeded to kill the Necro and then get my kister back inside the Keep.

In the frequencies of energy, you go from light to sound… how much further is flesh and bone?

The thief also has scorpion wire to pull you down as well.

That requires a hard line of sight, if your not standing perched on the edge of the wall, it wont work and even then it will randomly miss 60% of the time.

I think there is a bit of a strange ideal that when defending you should be able to stand on the edge of the wall unchallenged to the enemies below. there is another thread about aoe on walls as well.

The way I see it if attackers are organsied enough to clear the walls and attack sensibly pulling people off preventing people running in its just playing well.

I do not disagree with that, but this game is very zerg centric at the moment and I think overall needs more tools for smaller forces. AoEing the walls is one thing, you can get out of the red circles and stand in places where they cannot reach. Sucking you out without line of sight, takes it a bit too far, imo.

I do think aoeing through the gates, both in and out, should be prevented.

Using mesmer focus skill #4 is my favorite part of WvW. It’s a bit risky, but I really get a ball out of parking myself on a precarious ledge and tempting a group of enemy players to come get me, and then pulling them all off to their deaths. You can really turn a battle around just by pulling the enemy zerg apart bit by bit.

As stated above, the Mesmer into the void is an AoE ability, and is not reliant on LoS. The only requirement is that your target is close enough to the curtain to be pulled in. This only works on ledges/walls with no lip to block the enemies. Most keeps/towers have this lip, making the pull off walls ineffective. The only time it works then, is if enemy players jump on the lip to attack. If you’re close enough and in range to attack, then I see no problem with a mesmer ripping you off the wall.

The exception would be like the OP’s example where there was no lip in the area he was standing. From my observation, not many walls are set up this way (I find walls with lips far more common).

if you want the ability to stand on an wall at fire at your attackers unchallenged then i think your just lazy and want things to be easy :/ If you dont want to be pulled here are some things that you can do to avoid it:

1. dont stand on the edge for too long. fire your one two shot then back down
2. if you have a mesmer with time warp ask them to use it and it makes your AoEs much quicker and less of a targetable opening
3. if you have a theif is that stealth pull you wont get knocked out of stealth till one of your AoEs hits add this with time warp = back on the otehr side of the edge before noticed
4. some keeps have that big blocker line of sight ppl and run back and forth shooting ppl then back in

Now of course elementals can shoot over it and rangers to but WvW was never ment to be a stand in one spot shoot till there dead game area thats why you have a dodge roll

Tip: Stand behind the lips on walls. Most walls have a lip that goes up to your knees. That will save you from being pulled down by a mesmer. If you’re on a wall or ledge with no lip and get pulled? Well, good luck!

Some of them have insanely large range or no los requirement. I was standing on the back edge of a wall and got pulled.
Kind of depressing the engineer’s pull is only 600 range, barely reaches the walltop if you were to stand at the bottom. I guess thieves are better with gadgets than us, odd as that seems.

Personally, I think it’s a whole lot easier to attack the people on the wall than it is to attack the people on the ground during a siege as the people on the ground have a whole lot more room to spread out and move. And some classes (warrior, at least) simply cannot attack the ground at all unless they’re right on the edge to have LoS to something. To me it’s usually just annoying, because I’m a warrior with high health and toughness with a number of condition clears so I can get back inside most of the time. But I would imagine other, less durable classes would just die.

Pulling people off the wall is interesting, but it’s also means instant death for most classes if they get pulled off the wall. It also puts their body in a location that simply cannot be ressed unless they drive off the attackers.

I guess it’s a fair question whether or not certain classes should get abilities that essentially amount to 1 shot kills? Especially 1 shot kills that put the body in a location that the enemy’s teammates cannot get to?

You can also be pulled of a wall even when there is a barrier. Happens more rarely, but still happens. But again, its the same as elementalists standing 3000 range below and still AoE you, just because the AoE scales unlimited in height.

I don’t think there is anything wrong in theory with aoeing the walls. The biggest problem that comes up for me is if I get downed on top of a wall that is constantly getting hit by aoe spells. Unless you are a class that has a downed teleport you are screwed, you can’t use your 4 because you are constantly getting hit, but you can’t actually target any of the players because they are out of range/obstructed.
Basically, being on top of a wall should be an advantage, why does it then feel like it is easier to hit people on top of a wall then to get people down at the bottom of it?
