Purpose to WvW?
Open world, castle seige, PvP/RvR goodness.
WvW sieges is a lot better than dungeon exotics because dungeon exotics are based for everything pve/WvW while WvW exotics are more based for higher survival.
you cannot say a set is better than another set they got different purposes.
WvW is for guilds and randoms to join and play together you dont need a reward but you do get a lot loot I get around 15 gold per hour farming with my guild and a lot karma badges to buy stuffs so basically you only need to play a proper WvW and you can get everything you want.
I don’t like sPvP because it is too confining for me. The arenas are too small for my liking.
I thus enjoy WvW over the rest because it gives me the opportunity to meet another player in 1v1 single combat. I will take a player on player fight over a scripted PvE fight every day of the week.
Theres no accualy reward in WvW its made for…….i dont really know thb in short you can get badges or some loot there but you can get more loot/g in dungeons or farming events in high lvl areas so if you dont do it for fun dungeons/events are more profitable then WvW….
The reward is fun and satisfaction you feel when outwitting a human opponent by using a cooperation of people in your guild and on your server.

The badges are used to purchase the gift of battle, which is required for legendary weapons. If you are into that kind of thing.
Depending on how much your willing to contribute, it can actually cost you more coin. I frequently do upgrades on buildings and escort for hours on end and then I have to go farm for hours on end to consolidate all the coin and karma I spent in WvW and personally never got a return from.
Ummm… it’s fun?
This probably is the purpose of most of the content of any game. For some reason something being just fun seems to be a very abstract concept, it seems.
Main reasons are here:

Later you’ll get the community and and the bigger picture and feeling of defending your own world, socializing and pushing yourself towards a better build and skills. It is all about L2P more.
WvW purpose?
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
What is the purpose of this game? All it does is reward you with lines of code and fakeness. Games are played to have fun.
The ultimate purpose of WvW is to prevent your skills from working. Skill-lag is your reward.

You mean hear annoying whine of their know-it-all Asurans?
Anyway, WvW serve one purpose: Entertainment. That is all. And its fun. So it serves it well.
You can also ask yourself what’s the purpose of PvE… There’s really no purpose but to have fun. If the game touched my bank account or world peace then there would be a real purpose right there.
If purely cosmetic then yes, PvE and PvP trumps WvW but I don’t know anyone in WvW who has issues with cosmetics. The question is are you spiking or being spiked and was it fun?

So is there any actual reward to doing WvW? I know badges let you buy…. exotics. But the dungeon exotics are vastly better than these (even the karma ones) and even look better.
You get access to level 80 exotics if your character is level 80. They have the same stats as dungeon exotics. I dunno why you can’t see them on a sub-80 character… it would make WvW look more appealing if you could.

The central differences between WvW and sPvP is in WvW you have supply, siege, and unequivalent level/gear, and zergs. Geared out 80s in full exotics have an edge over uplevels, but uplevels can still contribute. For me the siege and supply aspects are the largest differences, adding an overarcing strategy game of build and capture objectives to the tactical aspect one finds in sPvP. Zergs give an epic feel to an engagement, but it can also really dumb down play to levels that do not retain interest over time. If what you like best is challenging small scale action without level and gear imbalances, sPvP is where you need to go.
If the game does not grab you and you like PvE, you can still
- gear up in exotic end game gear via badges of honor
- complete your daily
- do jumping puzzles
- go for world completion
- contribute to the gathering and experience bonuses for winning WvW

Gee… what’s the purpose to PvE? Why fight programs when I can pwn nubs?

Haha +1. I was wondering if it was just me seeing an influx of rangers lately in WvW. Meh.

I know a guy that got Dawn or Dusk from a Lord…Maybe that will satisfy your urges to keep on playing.
Don’t know how true this is though,i just heard it.
Well if your idea of purpose in a game is ‘working hard’ to obtain virtual objects and ‘shinies’ than probably not.
However, if your idea of purpose in a game is to be entertained and have fun fighting other players in small, medium and epic sized engagements within an unpredictable environment than definitely yes.
The problem with this game is that there’s no end game. Sure WvW might be “fun” but is there a point? Is there a reward? Killing other people can be fun but in the long run it will die out.
The badge route Anet has gone with is a good start but the rewards with Badges is subpar to PvE rewards (PvE let’s you customize more than just 1 set of stats. And let’s be honest, the PVP armor art looks like complete rubbish.
Anet should release more things to grind WvW for, giving players some sense of accomplishment to fight for. Here are a few examples:
- More titles perhaps, people like titles.
- Different sets of gear, maybe even provide the same PvE gear for PVP badges.
- Make a conversion rate for trading Badges to any PvE badge of your choice (World of Warcraft has this, yes I’m making THAT comparison).
- Make Tower bosses drop a bonus loot chest on first kill of the day. I’m sure that will stimulate more players to start playing.
As it is of the moment, my friends guild has completely stopped WvW. We just don’t see the point. There is no reward, there is no “fun” because there is no reward (following a zerg around all day?), there’s actually loss of reward for doing WvW instead of other things. Anet needs to step it up.
I believe to answer this question, you first must ask: What is the point of even Playing a Game.
Why do we play?
For fun, to pass the time, to do whatever.
So like the many aspects of GW2, WvW is simply one facet that people find fun, they do it because they enjoy doing it, not because WvW has a definitive purpose or need.
So. Like anything, Play the way you enjoy, and have some fun.

Fun only goes so far. For MMO games there’s has to be a sense of accomplishment, not bashing your head repeatedly into a wall and saying, “Oh, I’m doing this because it’s fun!”
Fight again real people is and will always be better than fighting against a computer. If you have two sides with equal equipment and numbers, the side that wins is the one that is more organized and better with their individual classes.
In dungeon lands, all they do is add more hit-points and more damage to a monster to make it harder. There is really nothing that has changed in the past 10 years with dungeon encounters. They are pre-programmed encounters, there is no randomness to them accept for them the boss uses it instant kill AOE attack.

mouseover the WvW icon in the upper left corner of your screen, All those bonuses apply WORLD wide, PvE included. so the better your server does in WvW the more bonuses you get in PvE. i’m not sure alot of people realize that.
