The mistake is assuming that WvW is meant to be PvP. WvW is WvW. PvP is PvP. I do nothing but WvW and I play for the fights and the objectives; I even have a YouTube channel dedicated to showcasing my player versus player encounters in WvW. but I don’t consider myself a PvPer. I’m a WvWer.

If I want to fight other players under “fair,” arbitrarily balanced conditions, I’ll go to sPvP.

ok so i just leveled my ele in WvW and story(mostly because i love the story in this game) i have not set foot in open world pve other then a few wps and a few events when passing to the next story.
and the toon is fully geared with the stats i want and if i want othere stats i will just make them from crafting.
given that if you dont buy all the upgrades in each tower and buys a huge amount of siege plus haveing skills and a good groupe you can easy earn 1-2g a day in wvw(i know its little but its enough to get gear)and i dont sell my mats so your doing something wrong if you cant do it to.

And my point is that, since years pre-launch, ArenaNet has said that it is not intended to be balanced as PvP. It isn’t meant to be “balanced” or “fair” at all. It is mechanically PvP, yes, but it is not balanced as and is not intended to be balanced as PvP.

It’s a game type in its own and should be treated as such. MMOs are growing; it isn’t all black and white, PvE and PvP anymore.

They make an active effort to balance WvW, but it still isn’t intended to be balanced like sPvP. They nerfed Confusion, they nerfed Retaliation. Those nerfs were in the interests of WvW. Many of the skill changes are in the interests of balancing WvW.

What I’m saying is that they do care about WvW, but that they do not intend for it to be sPvP. They intend it to be WvW. I view your post as an assumption that it should be/desire for it to be sPvP on a larger scale. It’s not supposed to be and it shouldn’t be.

sPvPers have sPvP. Let WvWers have WvW.

It’s fair to say that WvW isn’t a fully developed game mode, and that the developers haven’t yet put in the resources to make it a properly balanced game mode with an appropriate progression system. But you have to admit that a game mode which involves anything from 1v1 to 80v80 really cannot be balanced properly.

My impression of sPvP is that it’s like an arcade game. You hop in, play a match for 15 minutes, then you’re onto your next. It’s completely different from WvW, which is an ongoing 24/7 environment where guilds, players, and even characters have different levels of recognition. Who’s on top of the leaderboards doesn’t directly impact the average person who enters sPvP, but anyone hopping into WvW will see the commander icons and the guild tags.

The whole philosophy in WvW, whether you agree with it or not, is that there should be character progression: commitment to developing your toon and acquiring a name in the WvW battlefield. If you swapped characters all the time in WvW, it’d be a lot harder to learn who was who. You can see this with how WXP and commander icons are character bound. As for why WvW gear is tied to PvE gear rather than having its own progression system, I presume that’s because it’s easier to implement it that way, but it also allows less experienced players to use PvE to get onto even footing.

While your post is very long winded, in simple terms, what you are proposing is fusing sPvP and WvW into the same aspect.

In many ways this would be for the best.

With WXP system in place, and the PvP Exp system in place, they could give Exp For both Aspects of the EvE environment

IE: WvW actions – Destroy Siege, take a point, kill a yak, etc, and you get WXP.

Defeat a player and you get whatever sPvP awards (Sorry I only sPvP to test builds)

This could also let them move the sPvP maps to junction off the WvW maps, so players that want to, can have their 1v1 duels, and even GvG fights.

However to make that a reality they would need to remove the “Control Points” from the “PvP” maps, and just make them Meat Grinder type fights, which is what the people who go there would want anyway.

Also. As far as gear goes. They should allow players to use a PvE (WvW) gear set up, as opposed to the sPvP that depends on amulets.

Also, keep the “starting” gear, just that, exotic starer gear, and allow players to use badges to change their look and stats.

It has potential to be great, and suck at the same time, and it really depends on how they fused them.

For me, it helps a lot to see the same names every time I enter WvW rather than a rotating cast. At the same time, if I didn’t have gear/commander unlock limitations, I’d probably be swapping characters every time I entered WvW. The same applies to gear sets, so as much as I like trying new professions and builds, it’s nice to be able to keep track of which roles my teammates play. There’s a tension there and I don’t know which solution is more satisfactory.

I believe WvW is meant to appeal quite a bit to PvE players, in giving them that epic sense of seeing characters from across the server congregating to battle together, while not punishing them too harshly for being inexperienced. At the same time, it teaches teamwork to those players and allows more committed individuals to stand out as leaders.

As for sPvP, I think my point is that if you’re an average player, you’ll never be like “oh my god that guy is in my match”, because if the matchmaking system is implemented correctly the average player will never face off against “that guy”.

I’m talking about the manner in which each is perceived and balanced by AN and the player base. I know what the definition of PvP is. sPvP is a gametype which is separate from WvW, and for a reason. WvW should not be balanced like sPvP.

I’m also not in the business of enjoying having people twist my words to mean what they want them to mean. Obviously, WvW is intended to be balanced, but it is not and never has been intended to be balanced in the same way as sPvP.

Both game modes are competitive in their own way and need to be balanced in their own way. That said, there’s no such thing as perfect balance in these types of games.

I posit that they have the ability to do separate balancing in WvW since they were able to change the damage value of Retaliation in WvW without changing it in PvE. I just don’t think they intend to balance it separately. It’s not the easiest concept to understand, but I do not believe (as they’ve said it themselves) that ANet intends to balance WvW perfectly or completely fairly.

It’s essentially supposed to be a big mess. After all, it’s not a couple of organized teams duking it out for leaderboard spots in an arena. It’s “war.”

Agree with Glitchfull.
But my day would already be safe, if i would have free access to all gear, weapons, sigil, runes and everything else to fit my character. It could have the crappiest skin i don’t care, but i could build my “perfect” build and tweak it anytime.
With that option my fun will reach a new level.

Ps: If i play anything else than WvW i’m not having fun, then i’m grinding equipment.
sPvP is fun for a short time but i usually play it to get a build idea for WvW.

I haven’t played sPvP before, can I go to their forums and complain that all the guys at the top of the leaderboard have a huge advantage in glory/rank points, that’ll take ages for me to catch up?

My point is people have spent time and effort acquiring WvW gear. You can’t just start giving it out for free, or make it completely unusable. If the game had been set up like this from the very start, then maybe this suggestion would have been better, but it’s too late.

It would be like creating a new vendor where you can buy legendary weapons for 10 silver, or just completely removing them from the game. Those who’d spent alot of time and effort for their legendary would be justifiably upset. Or if you just gave everyone Shark rank in sPvP for free, those who’d fought their way up to that rank would have good cause to complain.

IMO using under-levelled gear isn’t that big a deal in WvW anyway. When I’m levelling in WvW, the things I miss the most are the traits and the utility slots. Not having those hurts far more than not having the best gear.

I have all characters but the Engineer. Half of them have all exotics. I wouldn’t lose anything if its free from tomorrow but win allot of new possible builds. Take the runes for example, change them and/or the armor and you have allot less gold. Do you really see a disadvantage for you or anybody else if u could change them for free?
