Why does it cost 100 gold, which any PvE-er with too much free time can get?

Why doesn’t it cost, say, 5,000 badges of honor instead?

What is the reason why commander costs gold, and there’s no option to buy it with badges? It doesn’t make sense that there’s no test of pvp knowledge/skill involved in obtaining the right to command.

Badges are account bound, so they would only be for PvP farmers. That’s it.

With gold, people can get donations from those who support their ability to command. I know mine was donated by my guild. I know quite a few from my server, Tarnished Coast, also had theirs through donations.

So while some PvE-ers can get it, gold allows good commanders to also receive them without being a grindfester only.

Commander is just for controlling the Orr farming zergs.

I’d love to be able to buy it with badges. I think the current cost was meant as a gold sink and for guilds to be able to band together to buy the tag for their leadership.

99,9999% commanders out were appointed by their guild and got the book thru guildmate donations
0,00001% were PvErs who, among the myriad of PvE related thingies they could buy, somehow decided that spending their gold in a WvW thingy was smart

but please guys, dont let this fact derrail your ramblings, keep telling us how all commanders are PvE farmers

A good zerg can quickly tell who is a bad commander vs those who lead.

I am not a commander, yet I lead Zergs/ sneak attacks and have been told I am great and calling out def/attack/build for the whole map. I dont know if i would like the badge commander I know I Dont like the gold purchase now. I have seen way to many worthless commanders I have also seen good commanders. However I have gotten Random donations from people on my server I dont even know mailing me a few silver or a gold telling me to save it for my commander. To those people I thank, but with out them I would never get it because I just WvW and don’t have the funds to get commander. AND NO I do not ask for donations they just randomly appear.

All you need to be a real commander is the confidence of the people you lead. This confidence is usually given by repeated successes or knowledge of when to pull back/avoid massive groups of enemies.

Well, it also helps if you are on mumble, vent, or whatever voicechat server to get info and give it to your minio – er, fellow soldiers.

That’s my two cents.

The great irony is that, while in commander mode, it’s incredibly hard to be strategic. You’re expected to run the zerg around to locations, which often blindsides you to any sort of good strategy. I bought the thing thinking I could just run the zerg around and get stuff done, but you end up underfoot because of the constant lack of strategy.

They need to change how it works, or remove it. I think WvW should be a guild function.

^The commander can turn off their title if they don’t want random people following them.

Most players in WvW quickly learn which Commanders are worth following and which ones are not. I’m still of the opinion that each commander should have a different color when on the map to make it easier for groups to follow their commander and not get confused. It would be a lot easier to find my Pink commander, for example, if his icon was pink instead of blue like the other 3 commanders running around.

imho they should just remove commander and add a raid function. make a big group, d be able to see your raid on the map. it would be far more fun to actually be able to see conditions etc… on other players vs a random group of individuals flooding around unaware of what’s going on with anyone beside them.

the only value of a commander atm is that they show up on the map so you can see where the action is (providing they aren’t off gathering nodes or something).

I’m seeing a lot of stupid commanders out there and for some reason the zergs follow them. About five times tonight we’ve had commanders running around with the 40 man zerg on the opposite side of the map that isn’t even contested one bit and it takes them 10 minutes to run to points under attack. I mean, when I see a point that needs help I’m already teleporting and running.

Quick tip, asking for a red reply usually guarantees you will not get one.
