Question on Toughness/Armor Rating?
You can’t facetank the class you listed (and you can’t tank mesmer at all ^^)
Thief is about short burst timing. If you manage to mitigate those burst, you can kill them cause the price for those huge burst is to be very squishy
Warrior has a big window during which he will try to dish out as much damage as possible. Survive till his stances are over and you’ll be able to kill him.
=> force stance out and then buy time; avoid big spells, kite, etc.
Mesmer are super OP, they got BK, dispell, blind, stealth and invul on demand, if you see one, just run. I tested to survive a friend with my full ascended nomad guardian. I got to 25%life after the opening burst, didnt last even a minute XD
Anyway, dont plan to survive with a blob build to a pvp build
…
It does the job well :-)
Not sure if this is the right forum, but I am primarily a WvW player and well this is where I am struggling to be honest.
My builds usually run 1400-1500 toughness and 2300-2600 armor and I am still basically getting killed before I have time to react.
Mesmers, Thieves and even a Warrior yesterday were critting me for over 4k with multiple attacks in succession yesterday.
It feels like building tanky really has no benefit whatsoever?
Any advice?
Thanks.
Hi
You will have to be much more specific then that. What do you play, which profession, how much health you have, the rest of your build, what runes, at which point do you get 1 comboed a lot etc.
For example, if you play an ele and have 2600 armor but 14k health then yea, you will get practically 1 shot a lot. And I use the term 1 shot, but really, it will be 1 comboed, but might as well be 1 shot from your stand point as there will be not much you can do about it.
2600 armor may be OK, or may be next to nothing depending your build and your opponent. For example, on my guardian I can get up to 3500 armor at around 25-26k health + 10% passive signet of judgement reduction + aegis + prot + passive and active condi removals.
On that, I can face tank almost anything for a long time. I cant kill it, but its a group support build so I don’t need to, so when I come to 1 vs 1, vs a good roamer, usually I can make it half way or all the way across the whole map before they can down me, which doesnt happen as I always run into more allies or more opponents before then.
I used to be able to go like that even vs 2-3 roamers. Nowadays 2 good ones will get me down by time I make it to about a little over half the map.
That is my most tanky toon, its a build that used to command on back in the day.
So there are great many variables here. What do you play, build, how much aegis do you generate, how much prot, how much healing, condi removal, etc. if you get downed by mesmers and thieves then I am assuming you were roaming ? Is this what you do ? or were you just trying to make it back to your group ?
Also, 2600 armor is barely at the mediocre end, it is NOT tanky as you suggest, you barely scratched the mid range. What is your healthpool to go with it and the rest of the stuff ? Prot + regen uptime ? how much regen do you tick ?
Give us info please, so we can help.
Hey thanks for the reply. I am generally running Ranger. Approximately 20k health, Trooper Runes LB/GS Shout or Survival Build.

OK, as a ranger that is a low healthpool. Rangers also have the worst condi cleanse access in the game and its pet dependant. I can tell you from my perspective, when I roam, longbow rangers are practically free kills for me because of this. i tend to run not just condi builds and hybrids but use reflects as well. the only ones that give me a good fight and I lose to on rare occasions are melee, sometimes axe ? but I cant tell for sure, tons of dodges and they dont use bow at all while still being quite tanky and the tankiness is not toughness based, cause as i said, i use condis.
For group play I’m not really sure what you can do to get better defenses, health still seems kinda low and I would go with runes of melandru + lemongrass poultry or saffron bread instead of trooper. trooper removes only 1 condi per shout, whereas melandru coupled with -condi duration food on you is a flat passive that works on everything at all times which comes into play greatly when being CCed. If you notice, when you can move / dodge etc you die less, so this combo helps with that by reducing further duration of immob, chill, cripple on you in addition to the damaging condis.
make sure to run at bare minimum 2 stunbreakers. in shouts you only have “protect me!” and i dont know if its pet dependant since i havent played ranger in very long time, deleted mine, if it is pet dependant, you may want to go with something else.

You can try going defensive with traits. Something like this will mitigate a lot of direct damage through protection, barkskin and weakness http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRnUqA9Ci9rAusActgBMhyX8F4x/boBi8eZHgA4gVfeA-TFDEABLqOie6AuUlACeAAbpE0gLBATKzmUFjmUa0mmgk2fAgjAAhAMvAA-w
Personally I like running MM/SK/BM with remorseless, quickraw and zephyr but if you are getting burst down before you can respond this will help with that a lot.
Thank you Tongku, I am honestly not having much issue with Condi. Its the burst that is getting me, but your advise is much appreciated.
Yeah, Puck. I am pretty much using your MM/SK/BM build.
I think part of my problem is I just recently returned to the game after almost a 2 year break. When I left fights were much more drawn out and while there was some burst it was not as significant as it is now.
Maybe it is a L2P issue for me and just getting used to the new playstyle. It’s a frustrating learning path though as I used to be able to pretty much at least 1v2 most classes.
