Reason for WvW?
You don’t even have realm pride here due to the fact people can hop from server to server, for free with no penalties, with their leveled toons. So, if your server is losing, you just hop to a winning server and bask in the glory.
There is no personal progression in this game.
Im hoping they will add the rank / ability system daoc had as it does allow you to keep building your character for years
But even without a reward system it is still something to. you fight for your server, you fight enemy players. building a character that can kill enemy players is kinda the purpose, like a self reward, kinda like knowing you were able to win against your opponents
It’s hard to have any server pride when I know everyone can just transfer at the drop of a hat. What the point of even WvW if you can just switch servers everyday?
@sue the free transfer are not perminent. Once it ends it will cost $ to transfer and you wont get WvW rewards till the next round. so server hopping shouldnt be a problem
Fun. The reason is to keep doing it is because it’s fun.

So, where is this fun you speak of?

So If I extend your logic then getting camped at your keeps spawn is fun? I’m just trying to be clear about this.

If approached with the right attitude, yes. Please bear in mind that when I use the word “fun”, I do not mean to say “winning”, unlike many people who toss the word about on this subforum. The two are not synonyms, nor are they interchangeable.
It’s entirely possible to have fun without winning.
wheather my side is winning or losing i go out and defeat my enemies and it is fun to me. yah sometimes when my side is losing bad it can be fustrating but i always find a way to win on my own, wheather its ninja ing a supply camp with friends or finding solo enemies and killing them. you would be suprised how many people you can kill that are running around gathering
Although I don’t think a RR system is needed, because I know many players who happily re-set their RR in Thidranki and Molvik in DAOC, I do think they should add one. I don’t want them to give out abilities or anything like that, just cosmetic stuff like armor/weapon skins, special finisher flags ect. (I wish the commander icon was reserved for this system and the highest rank people, rather than just wealthy people). So if you get to a higher RR gives you access to a vendor for these things. This reward system would be consistent with the rewards they give out in the other aspects of the game (dungeons and PvP). Also this wouldn’t punish people who forget to loot those annoying bags for badges.
when did people stop playing games for fun?

This.
PvE mobs and events are always predictable and doomed to quickly grow stale after the first few encounters. Mass PvP offers an never-ending, unpredictable shift in situations and circumstances. The tools are all there to keep WvWvW interesting, the only limit is the imagination of the players.
when did people stop playing games for fun?
How is it fun when one side is totally dominating everything on the map with over twice the points the other two teams have and there is no chance for the other teams to win? There is no reason to participate once it is at that point. What fun is it beating up two cripples? What fun is it for the two dominated teams to feed the 8357524 people from the winning team karma?
No personal incentives = no reason to WvW past a certain point.

you mean like this? you mean that if you can’t run with a zerg then you can’t have fun? i’m pvping with 1 friend and were having a blast, get on teamspeak or vent and give it a try… guaranteed you’ll have a lot more fun then running with your zerg buddys
I agree that his is a huge problem. I think it’s fun but at some point you lose the achievers that want some kind of progression. I’ve barely touched the sPvP, but it seems like there are ranks, titles, gear unlocks of some sort…all of this is desperately needed as well as some kind of player/guild ranking.
100% agree with you Moon. Played DAoC myself and I still consider it to be the best MMO, let alone pvp game, ever created. However, while I think that adding in a Realm Rank system into GW2 would make it the next best (if not better) thing…I don’t think it will happen any time soon. For one (and these are my opinions alone), most of GW2’s playerbase is of a “younger” MMO crowd…never having experienced anything as hard/satisfying as DAoC. This being the case, introducing a system that would literally require not only years of play to “achieve”, let alone all the bonuses/power gaps that come along with it would have most of this community in an uproar. Furthermore, due to this unfortunate mindset, most of these players would probably get frustrated/quit before they really could understand just how satisfying getting to RR8 feels…leaving Arena Net in a bind for taking a risk on implementing anything really RvR like.
Overall, I would LOVE to have some kind of rank system in the game…but the fact that players are already freaking out about simple things like legendary weapons (getting to RR10 in DAoC would like be crafting 100 legendary weapons…without the ability to buy anything btw) just does not make me believe it will ever come to pass.

I dont even think you need stat bonus for ranks. But you do need the ranks. I never played DAoC. Warhammer was I’m sure a poor copy. And the end game was horribly broken. But people logged with a reason to play every day for hours. There was a reason to fight even if you were losing.
There are systems in place to reward those who WvW but they are all extremely long term, which makes them invisible in the short term. There is a tab dedicated to WvW and all of them come with titles but they are set up to take a long long time to complete, there is a noticeable lack of intermediate rewards in WvW. If there was a way to display the WvW kills badge in game that would be a start. It’s a bit frustrating to have the tier 2 badge but not be able to show it in game simply because it’s not complete.

Computer games are a form of entertainment, the objective is to be entertained. Just like there is no material reward for reading a book or watching a movie, neither should games absolutely need incentives other than the enjoyment factor.
Basically if you are not having fun then why are you playing?
