I think traps are underutilized, which is probably because they are underdeveloped. Here are some basic suggestions on how to improve traps:
1) A person should be notified when a trap of theirs has been activated.
2) There should be a trap ability category with rewards like the ability to set more than one trap (up to 3 perhaps), drain more supply, remove stealth for a longer duration, disable siege for a longer duration, bigger area of effect, increased casting range, etc.
3) An activated trap should award WXP to whomever planted it.
