Repair bills are not encouraging WvWvW
So someone hits you with an axe, you shouldn’t get damaged?
There are good weeks and bad weeks….
WvWvW Player Who Doesn’t Have Much of A Clue
Honestly, if you’re not killing more people in WvW than being killed, you’re doing something wrong. I’m pretty bad and die a lot and even I have a 5 to 1 kill to death ratio (which is really bad). Even with those deaths, I always come out with more coin in my pocket than I went in with after repairs.

Whenever I enter the WvWvW is the same. I play in some low population server and for that we are always losing. And why to get in WvWvW just to get killed and pay a lot of silver after you get ganked?
Seriously… PvP should never damage your gear.

If you’re getting a 5 to 1 kill death ratio, that means others must be doing worse. Everyone can’t have this ratio. It’s mathematically impossible. There are a number of reasons why someone has a worse ratio and I bet you are not being completely accurate unless you just roam around in a large group.
As far as not having repair on a PvP server. I don’t agree with that statement. There needs to be risks associated with engaging in PvP. It is what makes things interesting. If you are out numbered, organise to join a parting or find out where your zerg is.

I don’t think I’ve ever spent more in WvW than what I made.
It encourages you to die less if anything. I rarely have a repair bill after playing but I only die once or twice at most in an hour that I play.

That’s already happening but I do agree with you, GW2 needs gold sinks in order to stem inflation.

Why does it have to come at the expense of WvW?
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
Haven’t had this problem with repair bills. Run around doing events to get a bit of extra cash. Take supply camps, defend towers/keeps, escorts some dolyaks and eat a few of the enemies. These combined with facing players ensure that I always make enough gold from wvw for repairs, siege and upgrades.
I never die. Ever. Not one time. But if I did, I would probably quit playing, because that would mean game is broken.

Because you can get money/gear from doing it. It’s really no different from doing pve, except the mobs are other people.

Depends, I make A LOT of gold when I do WvW (except for the last two weeks before this one since we were facerolling T1). You just need to be with a decent group (not a zerg) and kill people/take stuff. Being in a group is the crucial part as it makes getting credit for kills so much easier.

This is not quite true, because in a group situation – everything who tags an enemy gets credit for a kill. For each death, you could have like 5-10 people getting credit for kills, so that means there will be 5-10 times more total kills than deaths on the battlefield. If every situation is 1v1, then you would be right.

This is all that needed to be said, I am not some super boss or anything but I do kill my fair share.. and even the times when I die before I get tons of kills I always come out of my wvw time with profit.

Yeah.. like I get at least a silver capturing camps (almost a guarantee since no one defends those, unless they’re spawn camping the citadel and using the northern camp), I’m sure I get them doing kraits and defending keeps (mortars, how I love you). Admittedly I’m not running around with exotics, just a bunch of level 80 greens but each piece of armor costs like a silver and a half. Hell, if its that bad just do events in PvE.

If PvE had the reward system that WvW has there would be outrage all across the forums. For some reason PvPers have always settled for less, and that’s why we continue to get it.

I’ve usually made 1g, not including selling items on the TP, by the time I’ve damamged my gear enough to need to actually repair.
If you repair every time you die you’re wasting money. Repair the first time 1 item breaks, and it will be less expensive in the long run.

If we get Darkness Falls and the RvR areas of DAoC in GW2 and especially the keep/siege timing/behavior, then I personally wouldn’t mind a higher repair cost
And that math fail of some other poster was pretty funny, “5:1 is an unusually bad ratio” – as someone pointed out, if you have a 5:1 ratio, someone else must die 5 times while only killing you once, in return (statistically). What has happened to today’s educational system.

The key to my statement is that you should not travel alone as I suspect the OP is and for the OP the maths would be true. The statement 5 kills v 1 death assumes Liquid is grouping up and again, stated “Don’t travel alone”.

Imo, WvW has enough gold sinks in tower/keep/supply camp upgrades and siege equipment. Repair bills in any PvP game are definitely unnecessary, and promote cowardice in battle. It’s simply an archaic design and should be done away with.

Upgrades and such are gold sinks that have a positvie effect on the game, since those with lots of money have somewhere to spend their gold.
Repair costs are a negative Gold Sink in that it only hurts new and casual players, which keeps those people from going into WvW at all.
I would much rather play a game that encourages people to enter WvW than one that discourages it.
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
I hardly ever die, so perhaps I have a biased opinion… But I’m glad there are repair bills as it helps prevent PvE players from wandering off doing the same PvE stuff alone, in WvW.
Almost always, if you stick with a group you’ll come out ahead. You can earn a lot of gold defending or attacking. Taking 1 camp pays for 1 repair, so I don’t understand the big deal about repairs. If you’re squishy then stay a little back of the front line and range your opponent to death. Learn to work as a team and you’ll find better results.
I come from a server that was bottom tier, so I know all about the bad weeks… I still found it incredibly easy to make money.

If you’re getting a 5 to 1 kill death ratio, that means others must be doing worse. Everyone can’t have this ratio. It’s mathematically impossible.
No it’s not, considering that several people get the kill credit for a single death. Take a 3 vs 3 where 3 people die on one side, 2 on the other. If they happen to be grouped up and do reasonably similar dps, everyone get credit for every opponent death. So the surviving winner gets 3 kills for 0 deaths, the 2 dead winners each get a 3k/d ratio, and the 2 dead losers each get a 2k/d ratio. Take bigger groups, add siege weaponry and it vastly inflates.
I’m sitting on over 3500 kills for 300 deaths, and i can most definitely tell you that it’s not because of my super-skillz.

If you aren’t upgrading towers/keeps you get quite a bit of gold from WvW I find. I run around with a mass of siege (always 20+ rams, 40+ arrow carts, 20+ ballistas, 10+ catas and trebs/golems when required), and still manage to be making between 2 and 6 gold a day on WvW. I’m not really rich enough to upgrade keeps so I make a point of having siege and supply on me always.
Repair costs really aren’t a concern seeing as a couple of blues cover every death, people just need to be more careful.
Personally I prefer games where all the gear ingame is player-crafted and you drop your gear every time you die. Makes every death and every kill more important.
Blacktide
Of all the costs in WvW, repairs are by far the most insignificant.
The most I spent in WvW in one weekly match was 18 gold, mainly on superior siege and upgrades. The following week my trading post game got exposed by speculators +1uping my buy orders and turning my target buys into giant asset bubbles from which no profit is possible. I guess repair bills were part of the total too, but its really insignificant.
If you need to kamikazi and needless repair bills still bother you, strip down to your birthday suit and charge those trebs with the wind rushing between your legs.

No, no Raincrow, you got it all wrong.
That IS how it works. It should be more rewarding than it is right now. I was not commenting on how it should be, I was commenting on how it actually is.
It is better for people to know how it is than expect a filet mignon when all they will get is a happy meal without the toy.
it can be pretty pricy to play in WvWvW. I mean along with buying siege because everyone else is a cheapskate/never drop theirs, the repair bills only make it harder to come out positive.
the argument of “don’t die” is not a good one. Its war, you will die, a lot if you play for points and especially if your commander likes to be on the offensive.
I do admit that if you’re buying siege and what not, placing it down, I do think that there should be a buff on loot received from killing in WvW as you are laying down costly weapons etc etc as well as facing repair bills.
Some sort of siege master buff that would encourage others to buy and lay down siege. Buff only activates if siege is successfully built

Yes, what has happened? Since everyone who touches an enemy player gets kill credit, your zero-sum gain theory is incorrect.
If 5 people fight 5 other people, it’s possible, even likely, that each person in that fight will end up with 5 kills and 1 death. (assuming there are no survivors)

That’s great and all, but I’m personally tired of PvPers / WvW just rolling over and excepting that we get treated poorly compared to PvE players.
Those of you saying “I make lots of gold” are missing the key points.
If you make lots of Gold in WvW you’re playing a lot and doing well, so of course you’re not effected by repair costs. The people who ARE effected are the average player. The casuals who don’t come here and brag about the gold they make in WvW because they aren’t making enough to brag about, and end up just going back to run dungeons and fractals.
As I said this keeps WvW / PvP from becoming the focus of the game. It will never be as popular as PvE because the people who love WvW the most just want hardcore mode with more punishment than reward and aren’t willing to fight for anything that might bring more MMO players into it.
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
These people who are making lots of gold in WvW; are they playing a different game than I? My box said “Guild Wars 2”. I do not rake in golds in WvW. Any pittance made from involvement in 10 or 15 keep takes/defends, 10 or 15 camps taken, several dolyaks killed in a typical 2 hour play session rarely nets me anything over 20 silver. If I get lucky to sell some of the junk I nab via mining/herbs and waste gear drops….. I might see 40.
Are you people never having to repair because you only stick with the self-rezzing zergball? I’m serious. I’d like to know exactly, and I mean exactly, what you are doing because I want that cash too and I don’t want to set foot in PvE for it. Ever.

I play with an organised guild on a T1 server. A full evening of WvW can easily be 500+ kills with maybe 5 deaths. That includes countless dolyaks, supply camps, tower/keep attacks/defences. I spend a bit on siege, but I still end up well ahead on cash.
