Require WvW information about Ranger and Thief
Thieves are very fast and make ideal scouts and guerilla capture squads. They are pretty bad at front like fighting, but are incredibly useful for sneaking around and cutting off supply lines and taking camps. Most rangers I see are corpses.
Depends on the player.
Ranger can zerg better than thief. Thief is very solid small group class.
Pick a Warrior and do both well.
My friend and I are rangers and us two can take supply camps easily and hold off enemy players pretty well.
Disagree VERY much with the people saying Thief is worse than ranger. As a thief player who’s coming from playing both a warrior AND a ranger, I’ve found the class to be highly effective at WvW, as long as you understand that WvW includes more than just gate sieges.
Thieves lack a really 1200 range attack for gate sieging, and also are a little weak in the AOE department unless you use the shortbow. Scorpion Wire can be amazing for pulling people off walls, or out of a zerg pack if you can time it right. Thieves also make the best supply runners and back area raiders due to their speed and elusiveness through stealth.
In zerg vs zerg fights, the ability to run in, get a stealth execute, then get away can sometimes be the difference between an enemy players getting back up and into the fight again or being knocked out. A group of thieves working together can be absolutely devastating against reinforcements trickling in from the enemy respawn as well.
Rangers do have a really strong advantage in distance attacks. The longbow traited for extra range can be nice in standoff situations at gates or zerg vs zerg fights. It’s on ALL the time, and there isn’t really a situation where the extra range isn’t useful. Their group buffs through spirits are also a welcome addition to just about any fight, although they can be a little squishy with all the AOE flying around.
Both classes have their strenghts. And saying one is weaker in WvW than another is just plain wrong. It boils down to what role you want to play in the fight. If you enjoy sitting at the gate or in the zerg and picking people off at range, go with the ranger. If you enjoy a more skirmishing style of fighting, go with thief. Both are very good classes, either way.
Well if you like standoffs and keep defense, a longbow ranger would be for you. If you like open field both the shortbow/trap ranger and thief would be for you. if you like sneeking up and killing fast thief is for you
I play ranger.
Longbow is pretty good for attacking keeps but that is the only place it shines. The arrows fly too slowly in open-ground combat, making them easily dodged, and it fires too slowly such that you can only get one or two shots off before the opponent rolls out of range. Barrage is awesome though.
Shortbow out-performs the longbow in almost every other situation.
I play a ranger spec that drops combo fields (healing spring, ice trap, fire trap) and use shortbow and axe/warhorn. The last skill you can kind of decide between a lot of utility (Muddy Terrain for immobilize and cripple, poison from snake trap, run faster signet, condition curing signet, etc.). I’m usually out with small groups recapping our supply depots since SBI and JQ are doing awesome at cutting off supplies, so we’d usually have less combo coverage if I were running a different build. Longbow would definitely work well as a keep/castle defender though.
I play a thief and really enjoy the class in WvsW. I’ll be honest though, I didn’t at first. I kept trying to just aoe people from the towers I was defending, and that really isn’t where the thief shines.
Then, I messed around with some my traits and skills, and found one I completely love because of the balance between burst and survivability. The thing I love the most is that thieves are so mobile, couple that with awesome burst I can get into the middle of a group, (hopefully steal from a warrior) and have 2 whirlwinds to send people off in all directions and still make it out alive most of the time. It is amazing for scattering incoming zergs or pushing into enemy territory.
The speed thieves have is amazing too, between the movement speed signet and shortbow. I tend to use it to flank around groups and see if I can wreck some havoc before I need to run away, which doesn’t always work out for me but it is fun. The speed also helps in getting to points that need back-up quicker.
I haven’t taken my ranger into WvsW yet, so I can’t comment on them much. From what I have seen, they are very powerful in WvsW as well.
I have a blast on my ranger. I am pure glass cannon pwr/precise/crit. If you play smart you do well. I play longbow because I enjoy it more than short but we are great at back line focus fire and wall def.
Once they fix longbow it will be a lot more fun.
Rangers is the fotm class in WvW, it has the longest range so you can chase down enemies running quite easily, aswell as hitting players from keeps further then anyone else.
Everyone and their dogs seems to be a ranger.
The thiefs only use one skill
Ranger summed up by Selo: Rangers are fotm because they can shoot a long way and kite like most ranged classes do.
When in reality sb thieves and rifle wars probably do more dmg than lb rangers. lol
I’m just waiting for the buff. Other than LB damage the class is great. i tend to see more thieves than rangers but I guess its based on server or w/e….Either class seems to be lower pop than the others though. Dont play for todays pros and cons though…play what is fun and needed buffs will come.
Nothing is worse than rolling FOTM and you finally hit level cap only to have missed the FOTM train and you are now nerfed.
