Q:
Retaliation and loot
I have been in situations where we stacked in a corner in SMC and we buffed with retaliation and just stood there and watched players die.
They did 3 attempts before realizing that, lol and I did get loot bags without using any skills other than possibly some of them entering our light fields.

The answer is yes. If any skill you use deals damage to another player, you will get credit. Someone mentioned there is a damage threshold, but it isn’t a lot – somewhere like 500 dmg or something.

Retaliation isn’t a skill, it’s a boon. Not sure if that applies.

Poison, burning, bleed, and chill aren’t skills. They’re conditions.
Conditions which certain classes can take without me using any abilities on them.
Like a guardian using “save yourselves” or a Necro using plague signet.
And trust me, if my necro’s inventory problems are a marker for anything, we certainly get loot credit.

But those are applied using a skill or a trait.

Edited my response with more info before you responded, sorry.
Basically, you can apply conditions to someone, and have someone else take them upon themselves without you ever having used an ability on them.
At the end of the day, the source of the damage would still be me.
Just like the source of retaliation damage would still be me, even if it was someone else that gave me the retal boon.
We used to have a retaliation Mesmer build back in the day. Lots of fun, and no problems with getting bags.

Well, I mean, if you look at the combat log, it’ll say “you hit X for Y using Retaliation”
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
As per the January 26th, 2016 patch notes.
General
Supporting your allies will now contribute toward earning rewards for killing enemies and damaging event bosses. The actions listed below now cause a percentage of the target ally’s damage dealt for the next several seconds to also count toward your participation. In addition to that, damaging an enemy’s defiance bar will also grant you some participation toward receiving rewards from that enemy. In order to discourage AFKing with boon-applying auras, you must still be actively attacking targets to receive rewards from them.
Applying boons to an ally (small percentage).
Removing conditions from an ally (small percentage).
Reviving an ally (large percentage).
Healing an ally (percentage scales based on how much healing is given).
Obviously, it is my assumption this works the same in WvW as it does in PvE – the people you give boons to, have to deal damage enough to break the threshold to give kill credit.

to be counted toward loot you need to deal altest 1k total damage to a player to hit a loot box table.
